- The ASEAN–China Free Trade Area, the world's largest free trade area in terms of population, comes into effect.
- Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (pictured) in Lithuania, the only Chernobyl-type nuclear power station in the European Union, is shut down after 22 years of service.
- Six people, including four people at a shopping mall, are killed during a shooting spree in Espoo, Finland.
- Abdurrahman Wahid, President of Indonesia from 1999 to 2001, dies at the age of 69.
- At least 15 people are killed and more than 1,500 others arrested after major anti-government protests in Iran.
- Despite requests from the British government for clemency, Akmal Shaikh, a British national, is executed in the People's Republic of China for trafficking heroin.
