ip.access Limited is a multinational corporation that designs, manufactures, and markets picocell and femtocell technologies and infrastructure equipment for GSM, GPRS, EDGE, and 3G. Headquartered in Cambridge, UK, ip.access also maintains operations and offices in Bellevue, WA and New Delhi, India.

ip.access combines IP and cellular technologies together to provide cost-efficient 2G and 3G coverage and capacity of mobile networks in various settings, such as business offices and retail venues. Using satellite backhaul, its solutions also provide coverage to commercial passenger aircraft[1], ships[2], and users in remote rural areas.

ip.access is a member of 3GPP[3], the Cambridge Network[4], European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI[5]), Femto Forum[6], and an associate member of the Network Vendors Interoperability Testing (NVIOT) Forum [7].

History

ip.access was founded in December 1999[8] as a wholly-owned subsidiary of TTP Communications PLC. To accommodate its growing staff, ip.access relocated to new offices in Cambourne Business Park, Cambridge, where it remains[9].

In March 2006, the company secured a £8.5 million round of funding from Intel Capital, Scottish Equity Partners, and Rothschild & Cie Gestion[10], and was subsequently spun off from TTP. However, as part of its June 2006 acquisition of TTP, Motorola gained a large stake in ip.access[11]. In 2007, after signing an OEM agreement with ip.access, ADC[12] made a minority interest investment in the company. Following suit, both Cisco Systems[13] and Qualcomm[14] also made strategic financial investments in the company in 2008.

ip.access was named to The Sunday Times Fast Tech Track 100, which produces rankings of top-performing private companies in the UK, in both 2007[15] and 2008[16]. The company was also cited as the number one picocell vendor in an independent study performed by global market intelligence company, ABI Research in 2008[17]. In 2009, it was named to the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 EMEA, an annual ranking of the fastest growing public and private technology, media, telecommunications, life sciences, and green technology companies in 26 EMEA countries[18].

In July 2007, ip.access became a founding member of the Femto Forum, an organization promoting worldwide femtocell deployment, with the goal of addressing standards-oriented issues such as radio planning and control, device provisioning, and device-to-network standardization collaboratively with other members[19]. The company actively participated in 3GPP's development of the Femtocell backhaul Iuh standard, within 3GPP RAN3. It remains an active contributor to its ongoing evolution, as well as leading portions of the OA&M work in the 3GPP SA5 working group. In April 2009, the company announced its Oyster 3G product would support femtocell standards published by 3GPP and the Broadband Forum[20]. In June 2010, the company further announced standards-based femtocell interoperability testing between its Oyster 3G femtocell Access Point and Kineto Wireless' Multi-Service Access Gateway had been completed[21].

Products

The company's technologies are employed by telecommunications firms such as AT&T[22], which uses Oyster 3G as the core femtocell technology for its 3G MicroCell[23] product, and Cisco Systems[24], which is jointly developing a femtocell solution with ip.access. Both its 3G and 3GSM product lines maintain compliance with the Broadband Forum's TR-069[20] technical specification.

nanoGSM®

In 2002, ip.access introduced world’s first IP basestation controller for indoor GSM networks[25]. The nanoGSM uses 2G picocells that leverage the standard GSM air interface, full IP-based BSC, and OMC-R management system to deliver voice, messaging and data to both 2G and 3G handsets at an indoor range of up to 200m.

nano3G™

The nano3G E8 and S8 are femtocells providing carrier-class coverage to commercial[26] and consumer users.

Oyster 3G™

Launched at the 2007 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain[27], the Oyster 3G is 3G femtocell technology used by system integrators and OEM customers to integrate WCDMA femtocells into home gateways, set-top boxes, and other devices.

Customers and Partners

Among ip.access' major customers are AT&T[22], Bharti Airtel[28], Blue Ocean Wireless[2], Bouygues Telecom[29], Monaco Telecom[30], SFR[31], SPIE SA[31], T-Mobile[32], Tele2[33], Telefónica O2 Czech Republic[34], and Telia Sonera[35].

The company's technology partners [36] include AeroMobile[37], Altobridge[38], Blue Ocean Wireless[39], Cisco Systems[24], Private Mobile Networks[40], Qualcomm[41], Quortus[42], Setcom[42], and TriaGnoSys[43].
