• 1704 – English colonists from the Province of Carolina and their native allies began a series of raids against a largely pacific population of Apalachee in Spanish Florida.
• 1949 – The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences presented the first Emmy Awards to honor excellence in the American television industry.
• 1990 – Avianca Flight 52 ran out of fuel on approach to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and crashed into the village of Cove Neck, resulting in the deaths of 73 people.
• 1995 – A team of Norwegian and American scientists launched a Black Brant XII sounding rocket, which was mistaken for a Trident missile by Russian forces.
• 2006 – Mexican professional wrestler Juana Barraza was arrested in conjunction with the serial killing of at least ten elderly women.
• 2006 – Three independent observing campaigns announced the discovery of OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb., eventually leading to the removal of Hosni Mubarak after nearly 30 years of rule.

• 1533 – Anne Boleyn, already pregnant with future queen Elizabeth, secretly married Henry VIII of England, the second of his six marriages.
• 1890 – American journalist Nellie Bly completed a circumnavigation of the globe, inspired by Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days, in a then-record 72 days.
• 1971 – Idi Amin seized power in a military coup d'état from President Milton Obote, beginning eight years of military rule in Uganda.
• 1993 – Five people were shot outside the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in Langley, Virginia, resulting in two deaths.
• 2004 – Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity (artist's impression pictured) landed on Mars and rolled into Eagle crater, a small crater on the Meridiani Planum.
