Katherine Delmar Burke School

You appear (very clearly) to be the IP that was just partial-blocked from the page Katherine Delmar Burke School for two weeks. Do not edit the page again until those two weeks expire. This is your only warning before I flag this account for block evasion(which will still likely happen even if I do not report it). SpinningCeres 23:24, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: for admin: block log of relevant IP range here. SpinningCeres 23:39, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

Your reason here This is ridiculous and is an attempt to censor.

Decline reason:

Please log out to appeal the block. 331dot (talk) 00:53, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

You'll have to appeal the block logged out on the IP range, since this account isn't technically under the sanction(but would be if reported as block evasion). SpinningCeres 23:41, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Looked into it and couldn't figure it out. This is a hard project to contribute to.

Reference to school's own website

Please extremely limit the number of references to burke's own website, as it is self-published material and a primary source. School Wikipedia articles should rarely(if at all) reference the school's own website. SpinningCeres 17:03, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If I trusted you were more than just content blocking it would mean more. I can't add to the talk page so left notes on your page as well as some of the editors you asked to help suppress this info recently.Factsforsure44 (talk) 17:06, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Please look at the mass reverts as a way to suppress info. This is beyond frustrating. My edits are constructive and well sourced as shown in my sandbox. I'd like a higher review if possibleFactsforsure44 (talk) 17:15, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Looks likely that what Casualdejekyll said is accurate. If that's not the case, please open a new unblock request and specifically note that. Yamla (talk) 17:24, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You were partially blocked as an IP, created a new account, and re-engaged in the same exact actions that led to a partial block, which only shows a lack of learning on what you did wrong and a refusal to improve. (Non-administrator comment) casualdejekyll 17:19, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote a defense that got lost in cross edits. I did not create a username to evade the block. I created a username at the request of @willondon. I have read everything requested and this material was formatted exactly how the template on the talk page provided by one of the critical editors.Factsforsure44 (talk) 17:26, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What I did was create content to Wikipedia's standards.[1] Please judge the content, not the person. And please escalate however possible. That content[2] deserves to be seen and edited like anything else on the siteFactsforsure44 (talk) 17:27, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Re "I did not create a username to evade the block. I created a username at the request of @willondon", this much is true. I advised it here, and have recently outlined my thinking at admin Tol's talk page. That said, I don't believe the switch from IPs to registered account is an attempt to decieve or evade a block; but I do think activity under this account name can certainly be judged on its own merits. signed, Willondon (talk) 18:28, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure this will go through. I appealed.Factsforsure44 (talk) 18:36, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(note: composed during edit conflict, unaware of "also" section below)
I doubt it will. The fundamental judgement of an appeal is: if I lift this block? will there be more disruption of Wikipedia? That's it. And that often boils down to, has the editor shown signs that they understand now what the problem was? Unfortunately, I don't see it.
My advice to you: (1) pay attention to the advice that you are given here, (2) realise that nobody knows who you are here, and feedback is not a personal attack on you, it's about the edits, (3) back away, take a break from it, and reflect that you've taken a number of runs at it, and hit a brick wall at every turn, (4) and then consult a friend or advisor in "real life" who can maybe provide some insight on why everybody seems to be against you, and your edits aren't "sticking". signed, Willondon (talk) 18:49, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(And after reading the "Also" section, I hereby drop the mic.)

Also

My appeal was based on the hard-knock school and how a handful of editors have been unduly hard on me (calling me incompetent; untrustworthy; etc) and how with the timing of this after the page views unexpectedly shot up to 2500 before the edit war I find it suspicious that this resistance isn't reputation-based on behalf of the school.

Someone even reached out to the teahouse where the nice editors are but they said this was an admin issue.

I was being threatened by @spinningceres from the start without any warning about what it was about. Then the threat was withdrawn, but it was still there. I've been told that I both have conflict of interest editing and school puffery. Most importantly the last entry was specifically formatted to the school template; yet, someone comments on it like I am not following it. This is editors suppressing info @willondon @spinningceres etc. Factsforsure44 (talk) 18:42, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Also @willondon I wasn't rewriting the site. You brought it back to the stub and then I was adding in reliable info. No editor was constructive and there was a good deal of collusion -- as the record shows. There was no content on the site. I added a reference that was needed (Miss Burke's) and provided good content yet I am blocked indefinitely. This is too heavy handed as I've said before. No one else contributed. Please note that.Factsforsure44 (talk) 18:48, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

And Hamlin's site points to the school. I don't believe the prevailing winds against using links to the school since it could be based on protecting the reputation of the school rather than on verifiable info. I lost a sandbox as well. Biting the newbie. Factsforsure44 (talk) 18:49, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

pinging @Willondon @SpinningCeres since you didn't do it right casualdejekyll 19:11, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A few final thoughts:
  • I did not threaten you, I warned you not to continue disruptive editing, which has been being reverted since May.
  • "Collusion" on Wikipedia is called consensus. Please stop accusing people of acting in bad faith.
  • As stated before, Wikipedia does not and will not consider information only supported by a article subject's own website reliable. Every other sentence being sourced by a RS does not make inappropriately sourced content ok. Wikipedia's policies consciously and explicitly state that all facts about a person/place/thing do not automatically qualify for inclusion in articles.
  • Some non-Wikimedia Foundation wikis(as in not wikipedia.org) may have less rules on reliable and primary sources. I encourage you to search for some like that focused on California or the bay-area, and improve Burke's article there.
SpinningCeres 19:57, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Response

@spinningceres I counted the sources today before revert and there were approximately ten from Burke's website and fifty from other reliable sources. I've read through everything people suggested. You did threaten me and I made it known I felt threatened. That's in the talk page. Please refrain from adding inaccurate info to my talk page.Factsforsure44 (talk) 20:15, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Drop the stick and back slowly away from the horse carcass. casualdejekyll 20:18, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Appeal did not work

The appeal to unblock did not work. I will not write more to the editor above after being advised to walk away. I do think that the amount of removals that are baby in the bathwater deserve a look and pulled up somehow no edits for the user above (although they did threaten on the talk as can be shown if anyone went into the nitty gritty.) @Willondon's edits did come up and were five percent and all removing large amount of copy that genuine good faith work had gone into.(talk) 20:58, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Threat-y

This is what was on the talk page that I did interpret as a threat and made that known. "Please take a step back for a while and (re-)review Wikipedia policies including WP:TRUTH and WP:DUE and WP:AGF. Please also stop claiming that every removal you disagree with is censorship. Below you also suggest deliberately disrupting wikipedia to make a point by restoring what you again(without evidence) claim as destructive editting. You can consider this your final warning before a request for some type of admin intervention. I have an WP:ANI report/'request for more eyes on this' typed up on a word document that I decided not to post yesterday. SpinningCeres 18:39, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Striking final warning:Clarifying that I don't intend to report you the very next time you post here. Just please respect talk page guidelines and assume good faith.SpinningCeres 19:20, 10 February 2022 (UTC)"

Someone saying they don't want to report you is a threat now? Damn. casualdejekyll 22:58, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
They had it up first. I keep getting blocked. Plus I used Threat-y and mentioned interpreted. I feel I am being treated in an unwelcoming fashion especially since my status keeps changing. Before you wrote, it said I could not ever get another account. Really unfriendly inmhoFactsforsure44 (talk) 23:01, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Factsforsure44 (talk) 23:00, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to yet again re-offer the advice I gave before. Drop the stick and back slowly away from the horse carcass. You're saying the same thing over and over again and it's clearly not getting you anywhere. casualdejekyll 23:02, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I did. I thought my access was gone for good until you reached out. This page possibly in another browser is down because of attacks. I am more careful than that and understand that I am unwelcome. Factsforsure44 (talk) 23:03, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You're not unwelcome. Everyone is very welcome to Wikipedia. The issue is entirely with your edits, and you haven't quite realized that yet. casualdejekyll 23:04, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock

This user is asking that their block be reviewed:

Factsforsure44 (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

Your reason here this has been a series of misunderstandings as far as my motives. And there's no straight answer. Sometimes the talk page freezes up and the info is gone. Then I'm blocked indefinitely despite just adding the citation requested. I used the template asked for at the end of the talk page for Katherine Delmar Burke and then the material is wholesale taken out and someone says I didn't use the template. It's unfair to me as a new user. I also lost the sandbox after being told to use it and requesting feedback. I have worked in good faith. The info should be posted and go through the normal review process. This has been biased and there's only one of me (and I've never tried to disguise it).

Notes:

  • In some cases, you may not in fact be blocked, or your block has already expired. Please check the list of active blocks. If no block is listed, then you have been autoblocked by the automated anti-vandalism systems. Please remove this request and follow these instructions instead for quick attention by an administrator.
  • Please read our guide to appealing blocks to make sure that your unblock request will help your case. You may change your request at any time.
Administrator use only:

If you ask the blocking administrator to comment on this request, replace this template with the following, replacing "blocking administrator" with the name of the blocking admin:

If you decline the unblock request, replace this template with the following code, substituting {{subst:Decline reason here}} with a specific rationale. Leaving the decline reason unchanged will result in display of a default reason, explaining why the request was declined.

Here is some of the info that I hope someone else can add in to the page (this top four paragraphs has all been vetted by Wikipedia editors). @twsabin I had formatted it to what wikipedia says the school format is (governance, past head teachers, etc.) I also read Hamlin's site that uses a large proportion of references from the school site, which some Wikipedia editors disagreed with. Tuition

At the price point of $41,000 (this accounts for construction as well as the increase in insurance for private schools), Burke's may have reached what Caitlin Flanagan in "Private Schools are Indefensible" in the April 2021 Atlantic recently stated that money is god in private schools.[1]

Accounting for inflation from the 1980s tuition of around $5,000, Burke's would be about 11,000 today. That's the cost of one competitor Notre Dame des Victoires and other parochial schools that have also had a long history in San Francisco. The other independent schools in the California Association of Independent Schools have increased more and are in the $40,000 to $50,000/annual tuition. Burke's gave out $1.9 million in financial aid in the last tax year.

In 1954 the seventh grade was located at 3065 Jackson and the tuition for grades 6 through 12 was $775, payable in two installments with fees for lab, P.E., and art supplies, according to the San Francisco Pacific Heights book.

In 2006 the school was profiled in the San Francisco Chronicle article "Many reluctantly choose private schools". [2] The article states that, "Private and parochial schools -- arguably a second, shadow school system in San Francisco -- are not governed by the state and receive no public money. They must provide only the most basic information about themselves, including their address and how many students they enroll, to the state's Department of Education. They are not required to give standardized tests or report their demographic data. In general, they fly under the radar of government officials and the media."

Burke's is prominently featured in this article, as well as in other articles in this publication around that time, and the main person interviewed sends his twin girls to Burke's and another child to an independent high school in the city Urban. The parent is quoted as saying he is uncomfortable with the class divisions and how you can tell the difference between public and private schools in San Francisco just by looking at the students. This 2006 article shows the angst parents felt at that time as tuitions were rising, Urban was $26,000 and the Burke's tuition was $70,000 for twins, which the parents got some financial assistance on.

Parent Education

A former upper school head's blog discussed how to handle bullying as an educator in 2018[3] that referenced a Rosetta Lee training [4]. The Rosetta Lee training showed the classic girls' school bullying (especially in middle school) and used modern-day terms like indirect aggression and relational aggression as well as class-based bullying.

In the Rosetta Lee training, she provided many resources about how to emerge from a bullying culture. One is to understand the role of the bystander and to try and turn students into up-standers who are willing to act to prevent the harmful bullying climate.[5]

History

The power structure of the school started with Katherine Delmar Burke's mother who was related to the Kennedy family and had run a school. The graduates of her school became part of the city's elite and formed a powerful network as would the Burke's alumnae in years to come.[2]

Governance

The board of trustees and head of school role is critical to a functioning school, and the board takes an “oath of loyalty” to the head that can lead to a situation where no one is in charge with the head differing to wealthy donors (who may be on the board) — this criticism is mentioned by a parent of the current Burke’s head on greatschools.net—and then the board pledging an unwaivering loyalty to the head. The national organization has started to look at if this one leader head of school position as old-fashioned these days. [6] [7] [8]

Independent schools in San Francisco

The San Francisco independent schools will have events together often Burke's-Town School for Boys (sister-brother schools) or Burke's-Town-Hamlin's-Stuart Hall. In the 1980s, these schools had four school play days at the Burke's campus with its sports equipment. Now the alumnae clubs will hold multiple-school events such as a coctail party that keep a small circle of people in contact over the decades.

Another similarity of many small independent schools is they share the same attorney at Folger Levin firm in San Francisco. The school list includes Burke's, Hamlin's, University High School, and Branson High School.[9]

This points to the insularity of the upper crust in San Francisco [10], also noted by Vanity Fair. Some brand name last names and descendants of founding fathers have gone to the school for generations. [11] The school's alumnae magazine often shows lineages and is proud of that traditional aspect of the school. [12] [13][14]
