Return to Monkey Island is an upcoming point-and-click adventure game developed by Ron Gilbert's Terrible Toybox and published by Devolver Digital in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. It is the sixth game of the Monkey Island series and it is set to release on September 19, 2022[1][2] on Windows, macOS and Nintendo Switch.[2][3][4][5]

The game sees the return of Ron Gilbert at the helm of a Monkey Island project, after he started the franchise more than thirty years before; Dave Grossman is co-designer. The game was announced on April 1, 2022 on Gilbert's blog and confirmed with a teaser video three days later on Devolver Digital's YouTube channel.[6][7]

Although it begins "right at the end"[8] of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, it is not a sequel and the games following Monkey Island 2 will all remain canon.[9][7]

Dominic Armato reprises his role as protagonist Guybrush Threepwood.

Gameplay

Return to Monkey Island is a 2D point-and-click adventure game. The objective of the game is to move the story forward by solving narrative-based puzzles. This can be done by exploring locations, talking to non-player characters to acquire information, collecting items to keep in an inventory and figuring when it's the right time to use them. The player controls the pirate Guybrush Threepwood, who sails the seas and visits islands.[8][7][6][10]

The user interface is different from the one used in previous 2D games of the franchise. Tooltips over screen hotspots guide the player's actions: when the cursor is moved over an interactive zone of the scene, a brief phrase pops up, suggesting what action Guybrush would take if clicked.[11] The inventory uses a drag and drop interface to easily use and combine items[12] and the interface has been designed to work with controllers or mice.[6][8][13]

The game includes an integrated hint system designed to discourage players from looking for a walkthrough on the web. The hint system is designed to make sense "in the fantasy" of the game. The game also includes a simplified mode called "casual mode" for people who haven't played adventure games before or in a while.[13]

Settings and characters

The game takes place on fictional islands in the Caribbean around the Golden Age of Piracy, as with previous games of the franchise.[8] On his journey to finally find the secret of Monkey Island,[14][15] Guybrush revisits iconic locations from the series, such as Melee Island (which is now under new management) and Monkey Island.[8][11] He also lands on islands that have never been explored before in previous games, like the chilly "Brr Muda" and "Terror Island".[16][14]

All the three main characters of the series return for the game: the pirate Guybrush Threepwood (voiced by Dominic Armato), his love Elaine Marley (voiced by Alexandra Boyd) and his archenemy zombie pirate LeChuck (voiced by Jess Harnell). Murray the Demonic Talking Skull (voiced by Denny Delk) also returns.[8][7][17]

Development

Origin and production

Director Ron Gilbert (2013 photograph) returns after 31 years to tell what happens in his Monkey Island universe after the ending of Monkey Island 2.

Before its announcement in April 2022, Return to Monkey Island was developed for two years in complete secrecy.[7] Ron Gilbert, the creator of the franchise, returns to helm a new project set in the Monkey Island universe. This is after he left the franchise following the development of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. In the intervening years, Gilbert had often dreamed about making a new Monkey Island game but he didn't own the IP rights to the franchise.[9][18]

At PAX 2019, Gilbert was talking with Nigel Lowrie, founder of Devolver Digital, who mentioned to him that he knew John Drake, who was in charge of licensing at The Walt Disney Company, which owns the IP rights of Monkey Island through its 2012 LucasArts acquisition. Drake wanted to approach Disney about doing a new Monkey Island game and it was with this discussion that "the ball started moving forward on stuff."[13][9] In December 2019, Gilbert contacted Dave Grossman, who had worked with him on the first two games of the series. Gilbert asked if he was interested in joining the project, and Grossman accepted. In this first contact, Gilbert told Grossman that he wanted to keep the existence of the game a secret before revealing it on an April Fools' Day. When asked about how secrecy was strict during development, Gilbert said: "I did not tell anybody. If you were not actually working on this project, you didn’t know about it. I didn’t tell my best friend. I didn’t tell my mother, I didn’t tell my sister."[8][7]

Gilbert and Grossman met in Seattle in January 2020[19] to see if they could come out with ideas for the game and after this meeting they felt confident that they could create a good game.[8]

In January 2020, Lowrie approached Drake to pitch the game and Disney was willing to talk about it.[8] Since then, Gilbert had "lengthy conversations" with Disney to make sure that he and his team would have full creative freedom on the project, an assurance that Gilbert got and that was respected by the corporation during the development, allowing him to "build the game I wanted to build."[13]

The production went on, working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. At its peak, the development team consisted of 25 people.[6] Compared to Thimbleweed Park, Gilbert's previous commercial game, the team working on Return to Monkey Island was bigger mainly because there were more artists on staff, such as animators and a dedicated storyboard artist.[8]

Writing

It was important to Gilbert that Return to Monkey Island picked up exactly after the ending of Monkey Island 2, which is a cliffhanger showing Guybrush as a kid at an amusement park. He stated: "I left Lucasfilm right after that and never resolved it. Future games did their best but we wanted to tackle it head on."[7] Despite this, the game is not intended to be a sequel to Monkey Island 2 and Gilbert defines its temporal position in the series as "amorphous".[8]

Gilbert and Grossman discussed if and how the game should embrace the events of the other games of the series and they found a way to keep all of them canon.[7] The developers' general philosophy was to adhere to existing canon as much as possible with two caveats: it can be difficult to keep track of all the details and canon can sometimes prevent a good story from being told. So whenever something didn't fit, they would simply ignore it.[6][9][7][8]

Gilbert wanted the game to be a solid pirate adventure. He felt like some of the past Monkey Island games had gone a little too far into silly territory and he wanted the new game to just be a pirate adventure, focusing on Guybrush sailing the seas and visiting islands. This became a cornerstone of what he wanted to achieve.[7][8]

Unlike the extemporaneous approach to writing that Grossman had early in his career, he now did things in more stages, working from the top down. He began with planning the big aspects and then moved on to the smaller details. To do this, he did a thumbnail pass where he tried to go through and quickly scribble out the entire game. During this process jokes pop into his head, which he made note of. He believed that by taking this approach, it would preserve the freshness of humor without sacrificing the planning that was needed in guiding other aspects of the game, such as artwork and puzzle design.[20]

Art style

The art style of the game is significantly different from that employed in all previous installments of the franchise. The option to use pixel art was discussed and ultimately rejected by developers, who didn't want to make a game that was a throwback to those developed in the 1990s.[21] "Ultimately, we thought that we just had a lot more freedom and flexibility to not make it a pixel art game", said Gilbert.[6]

In 2007, artist Rex Crowle sent Gilbert a stylized version of Guybrush Threepwood, which the developer found striking. While searching for an art director, Gilbert remembered Crowle's drawing and researched his works, discovering that he had been a designer of LittleBigPlanet and the art director of Double Fine's Knights and Bikes. So Gilbert contacted Crowle to see if he could help get an innovative style for Return to Monkey Island, something not already done for the franchise's previous games. The discussion led to hiring Crowle as the art director.[8][22]

Crowle, who played The Secret of Monkey Island as a kid, took inspiration from other Monkey Island games and from other LucasArts classics like Day of the Tentacle. For Return to Monkey Island he defined a style reminiscent of a picture book or a pop-up book because it matched well with the main topics of the game: "we've taken something from all of the games, while making something new and specifically tailored to the story that Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman wanted to tell. An art style has to connect with the core themes of the game you’re making, its not an interchangeable thing that you apply like a Photoshop filter, and for this adventure a picture-book style was the right fit."[10][20]

Music and voice acting

Composers Michael Land, Peter McConnell, and Clint Bajakian, who already worked on previous installments of the Monkey Island franchise, were hired to compose the game soundtrack.[23][8] In an interview with Adventure Gamers, Dave Grossman pointed out how easy it was to work with musicians who already knew very well the franchise. Having them back for the sequel was beneficial because they were already familiar with what was expected of them. The rest of the team could simply sit back and watch them create, knowing that they would deliver quality work.[8]

Dominic Armato, the voice actor for Guybrush Threepwood in the previous games, was signed on to reprise the role[24][25] and was happy to accept the offer. Gilbert met with Armato to have a chat about an unspecified "new game" and the voice actor was baffled when he discovered that the game in question was a Monkey Island game: "We got together, we had coffee, and I think he was very interested in the new game, almost kind of wondering whether maybe he could have a voice part in it. And then I told him that it was the new Monkey Island, and he was just floored."[6]

Alexandra Boyd and Denny Delk returned to voice Elaine and Murray the Talking Skull respectively. Earl Boen, the original voice of LeChuck, had retired from acting in 2017 and declined to reprise the character, giving the developers his blessing to recast the role. [8][7] Jess Harnell takes his place as the new voice of LeChuck.[17]

Technical design

Considering that mice have historically been one of the main types of input devices used by adventure game players, the developers spent a lot of time trying to understand how to make the game enjoyable with a controller without making the experience worse for players who use a mouse. One of the goals was "not distracting or detracting from what the mouse play is."[6]

The user interface is different from the one used in previous 2D games of the franchise, like the clickable verbs or the pop-up action menu of The Curse of Monkey Island. When the cursor stops over a screen hotspot, a brief message of what Guybrush is thinking pops up, suggesting what action he would take if the player clicked the mouse button.[11]

Gilbert revamped the game engine that he used for Thimbleweed Park to be sure that it was up to the job for Return to Monkey Island. The development of his free game Delores A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure, released in May 2020, worked as a testbed for the new engine.[8]

The developers added to the engine the ability to do camera zooms, pans, and pulls without any issue on the hardware end. This was something that, Gilbert remarked, in the early 1990s would have been very difficult to implement, but now if they wanted to draw the player's attention to a specific element of the scene, they had the powerful ability to use the camera in a more cinematic way.[6]

Marketing

On April 1, 2022 Gilbert announced on his personal blog that he was working on a Monkey Island game, surprising the industry.[26] On April 4, 2022, Devolver Digital formalized the announcement publishing a teaser video on their YouTube channel and opening the official website.[7][27][23][28] The website was updated in June to show an example of the game's dialogue-based gameplay. Visitors can ask Stan, a regular character in the series, about the new game.[29][30]

The game was advertised in the official website as "the exciting conclusion of the Monkey Island series", which led to speculation as to whether the game was the final game in the series. The assumption was later disproved by the developers, who claimed that they didn't know where that text was from and that it was a marketing text not written by them.[31][15][32][33]

Starting from July 11, 2022, Gilbert and Grossman shared on Twitter a video clip of the game every Monday, calling the initiative "Monkey Island Monday". The clips revealed new locations, new characters and how the dialogue system and part of the user interface looked like.[34][35][36][37][11]

On August 23, 2022, a promotional video shown at the Gamescom fair revealed the release date: September 19, 2022, which coincides with International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Preorders were opened on Steam and Nintendo eShop. As a pre-order bonus, players would get a in-game horse armor item that stays in their inventory and has no function, a humorous reference to a controversial downloadable content (DLC) for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.[2][1][38][39]

Reception

Before release

In May 2022, after the first teaser video and a few screenshots of the upcoming game were released, a visible portion of Internet users disliked the art style and expressed strong critics on social media. This led Ron Gilbert to write a post on his personal blog, to clarify why that style was chosen and to express his sadness for the backlash.[40][41][42][43][44]

On June 28, 2022, a gameplay trailer was released as part of a Nintendo Direct event. This reignited the backlash against the art style, leading some people to insult and harass Gilbert on social media and his blog. As a result, Gilbert closed down the comments in the blog and said that he would not talk further about Return to Monkey Island.[45][46][47][48][49][a] Several game developers called out the abusive behavior from users and supported Gilbert and his team, including Cory Barlog of Santa Monica Studio and Neil Druckmann of Naughty Dog.[52]

Notes
