On 5 October 2023, a Syrian military graduation ceremony at the Homs Military Academy was targeted by a drone strike, leaving over 125 people dead and over 277 injured.[1] This attack follows increased clashes in the 'De-escalation Zone' located in northwestern Syria. The perpetrator of the attack is currently unknown.[2][3][4][5]

Attack

The incident occurred just after the afternoon graduation ceremony had ended. Among those who lost their lives were 89 graduate soldiers and 36 civilians, including 31 women and five children, according to the health ministry.[1][6]

Syrian Defense Minister Ali Mahmoud Abbas was in attendance at the graduation ceremony but left before the attack.[7]

Response

The Syrian government announced three days of mourning starting on 6 October.[8] The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned the attack on the military academy graduation ceremony as a "cowardly terrorist attack" perpetrated by U.S.-backed "terrorist groups" to destabilize the situation in Syria.[9]

Oman, China, India, Iran and United Arab Emirates released statements condemning the terrorist attack.[10][11]

Aftermath

The Syrian defense ministry vowed to respond to the attacks "with full force" and carried out an intense airstrike campaign on the opposition-controlled zone of Idlib Governorate on the same day,[12] killing at least 15 civilians, and injuring 37 others.[13]

Moreover, regions controlled by the Turkistan Islamic Party, Al-Nusra Front and Ansar al-Tawhid were targeted by airstrikes and howitzer divisions, especially in Idlib, Jisr al-Shughur and Ariha in Idlib Governorate, Darat Izza and Kafr Taal in Aleppo, in addition to Qarqur in Hama.[14]
