Oscar Niemeyer

I have a suspicion Niemeyer is probably not Jewish, and was just assumed to be by your source due to his German-sounding surname and since he spent some time working in Israel. I've not seen any biography of his mentioning any Jewish heritage, which is odd for such a major figure. Also, none of his family surnames are common Jewish names, and his maternal grandfather Ribeiro de Almeida was a very senior jurist in 19th century Brazil, which would have been very unusual for a Jew. Of course, this is all circumstantial, and thus original research. Still, if you find a better source (or any evidence to the contrary), I would be interested in knowing. Comprise

Thanks for participating in the peer review for Concerto delle donne. I'm particularly glad you fixed the capitalization of "Duke." I wanted to drop a word about "comprise," though. According to Merriam-Webster, there are three definitions for "comprise": 1. to include especially within a particular scope; 2. to be made up of; and 3. to compose or constitute. They add the following proviso:

"Although it has been in use since the late 18th century, sense 3 is still attacked as wrong. Why it has been singled out is not clear, but until comparatively recent times it was found chiefly in scientific or technical writing rather than belles lettres. Our current evidence shows a slight shift in usage: sense 3 is somewhat more frequent in recent literary use than the earlier senses. You should be aware, however, that if you use sense 3 you may be subject to criticism for doing so, and you may want to choose a safer synonym such as compose or make up."

Just bear in mind that it's not hard and fast that this third meaning (where "is comprised of" means "is composed of") is wrong. Peirigill 21:50, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

List of Brazilian Jews

I suggest you mention on TALK:List of Brazilian Jews how evaluating a source as unreliable via WP:RS is vandalism especially when quotations from Wikipedia's own policies states I am in my right to dispute the addition of Niemeyer on the list as long as I don't push for another POV (actually, thats not vandalism either according to WP:VANDAL). I highlighted the parts for you. Also, as far as I see in WP:VANDAL, it even says that stubborness, my greatest fault, is not vandalism. I have pretty sufficiently explained my reasons in the talk page. I hope you maintain civility (WP:CIVIL) and continue this debate rather than stooping to the level of vandalism accusations. 72.144.158.139 00:54, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I've observed that you rolled back an editor's attempt to clarify the reasons for inclusion in Category:Jewish mathematicians with the accusation that he violated WP:V and WP:NPOV. This is perhaps a little hasty of you. The category just survived CfD - and the editor in question was one of the most effective defenders of such religion-and-occupation based cats. He was attempting to protect this cat from being nominated again, or from bloating with individuals who should not be there according to guidelines. That was not the consensus on the CfD page, wherein this and several other similar cats for other religions survived deletion purely on the basis of a strict interpretation of who would be in the cat. I am afraid that I must ask you how precisely WP:NPOV is violated by seeking to apply to Judaism what was decided on for all other religions, namely joint notability. Peter Parker

Hello Brownlee!! I noticed someone added and you removed Peter Parker from list of fictional Jews. Although nothing explicit has been stated about this in the comic books (I would know), do you think this would be a sufficient source that he is Jewish? I'm not sure myself: [1] "Although he may still be in the closet, Weinstein believes that his favorite comic book character – Spider Man – is Jewish.

Deleting Categories of Jewish Athletes

Hi. I believe this is related to an issue that has interested you in the past. At http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion#Category:Jewish_fencers some people are suggesting that Jewish athletes, beginning with Jewish Fencers, should be deleted. I do not think that is the correct approach, or consistent with wiki policy, and thought that others might want to weigh in on the discussion. List of Iberian Jews - Jorge Sampaio

Hello Brownlee. I see you have reverted my deletion of Jorge Sampaio in the List of Iberian Jews. I shall not revert you edit, but I must disagree with you - you can not count everyone with some Jewish ancestry as a Jew, that would probably mean, if you go further back in time, everyone in Europe (just to speak of Europe). Yes, Sampaio is proud of his Jewish ancestry. That's great! But he himself is not Jewish in any relevant way. I think he should not be listed. The Ogre 14:10, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

As a Jew i appreciate the work that you are doing for mentioning Jewish people for their true origins. I wish to ask you how will you describe a Jew which been born in Germany and was raised upon the German culture?, ethnically talking .As for me , I would say that he is an ethnic Jew since this is his ancestry and the German culture which gave the emancipation for Jews (from 1870 to 1933) wasn't an ethnic culture ( i.e ethnic culture , for my understanding -and for many ethnologist is only one which pass from father to son within a unik historical group context) , the Germans never considered the Jews which lived to be from the same family (and according to some studies many of them still don't in many aspects) , and as the anti -Semitic in Germany was always strong (actually the term "anti -Semite" was coined in Germany at 1879 , few years after the emancipation were given -marking the hatred of Jews for their different origins) so even if a Jew totally assimilated his self- this is pretty understood-many Jews became self-hated and developed many kind of complexes as a result feom their hard life , so even religious Jews didn't walked there with any external sign for their Jewish ness (something that they are keep still doing as a tradition) and many were assimilated because they thought that this is the best way to obtain their offspring's good life. So , if you have to mention the ethnicity of a German born Jewish which was assimilated-would you consider him as :German/German+Jewish/Jewish. Attempt to delete category of Jewish athletes

Well, they are trying to delete a category of Jewish athletes again. This time, figure skaters. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2007_April_14#Category:Jewish_figure_skaters . I pointed out to the originator of the attempt that we had addressed this general issue already with Jewish fencers, where the attempt failed (due in part to your help). Still, they insist on trying to delete this category. Any help by your weighing in on the issue would be appreciated. I will do so as well once I have a chance to write something up.
