Nickelback

Nickelback is a Canadian rock band formed in Hanna, Alberta, in 1995 by Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger and Ryan Vikedal. Their hit single "How You Remind Me" from their third album, Silver Side Up reached the top on the Canadian Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time, making them the third Canadian band to accomplish this, the first being The Guess Who with "American Woman", the second being Bachman-Turner Overdrive with "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet".[1]

Since their smash hit "How You Remind Me" in 2001, the band enjoyed major commercial (although not critical) success. Nickelback sold over 14 million albums in the United States and over 1.7 million in Canada, their worldwide album sales totaled almost 25 million.[citation needed]

The band has won nine Juno Awards, an American Music Award, an MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film (Hero), and a World Music Award for World's Best-Selling Rock Artist. The band was also nominated for seven Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards and twelve Juno Awards. On December 4, 2006, Nickelback won three Billboard Music Awards out of five nominations.

Nickelback's latest release, All the Right Reasons has already sold over 5.2 million albums in the United States and over 7 million albums worldwide. A year and a half after its release, it still regularly appears in the top 20 of the Billboard 200.

NHL goalie Cam Ward, wore a goalie mask that has a Nickelback theme featuring the band members playing, and NHL goalie Jamie McLennan wears a mask that features the album artwork from Silver Side Up.

Nickleback's cover of Elton John's song "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" featuring Kid Rock can be heard every Saturday night during the intro of Hockey Night in Canada.

The band is currently in the pre-production stages of the recording of a new full-length album, which is tentatively due for release in late 2007/early 2008.[2]

History

Although the founders of the band hail from Hanna, Alberta, a small town east of Calgary, they are now based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The name derived from the nickel in change that Mike Kroeger often had to give customers in his job at a coffee shop, in which he would say, "Here's your nickel back".[3]

Their second full length album, The State, propelled them to the mainstream with two Top 10 hits (one being "Leader of Men") and the follow up album Silver Side Up, with 2002's most-played single "How You Remind Me", gave them superstar status, scoring multi-format smashes on every album since.

They have received six Juno Awards and were nominated for five more in 2006. Their single "Photograph" was nominated for best single.

In early 2006, Nickelback toured the US with Trapt.

In May and June 2006, Nickelback supported Bon Jovi on the European leg of their Have A Nice Day Tour, playing in Germany, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland and finishing in the UK.

Nickelback with their latest album, topped the nominees with three, the nominations including Favorite Pop/Rock Band/Duo/Group, Favorite Pop/Rock Album (All the Right Reasons) and Favorite Alternative Artist, for the 34th American Music Awards which were held on Tuesday, November 21, 2006 and winning for Favorite Pop/Rock Album (All the Right Reasons). Also Nickelback won a World Music Award for best rock group on November 15 2006, which happened to be Chad's 32nd birthday.

Nickelback will begin writing and recording new material for their sixth full-length album. It is expected to be released around late 2007/early 2008. Currently, no further details about the new release are known. [2]

Criticism

In 2003, an internet meme known as "How You Remind Me of Someday" or "Nickleback to Back" was created to illustrate the remarkable similarities between the songs "How You Remind Me" and "Someday".[4] In response, bassist Mike Kroeger said to the Cleveland Free Times in a press conference, "I think that's remarkable for someone to notice that there is a hit quality. If all hits sound the same, then sorry. When you are a band that has a distinct style such as us or AC/DC, that happens. When you have a distinct style, you run the risk of sounding similar."[5] Although it should be noted that due to the length of the different songs, one had the tempo slowed down a little and the other was cropped so they would run in sequence.

Despite selling millions of albums, the band is still heavily criticised by portions of the music-listening public. The aim of such abuse is usually directed at their continuous mainstream success, with many under the opinion that the majority of Nickelback songs sound similar. Because of this, groups of alternative rock band and artists' fans often refer to them in a mocking manner. [6]
