History

Carved out from the Kangra district in 1972, the district is closely associated with the Katoch dynasty. It was the part of old Jallandhar-Trigarta empire. Panin referred to the people of this kingdom as great warrious and fighters.

The Katoch dynasty predominated during the period of Raja Hamir Chand who ruled from 1700 A.D. to 1740 A.D. It was Raja Hamir Chand who built the fort at Hamirpur and the present town derived its name from this ruler.

This was a small town and has now developed a lot. This is the main hub for the cluster of villages in its vicinity. The district started becoming an education centre for the entire state and the people who brought the change were local. The town had a few private schools Adarsh Sishu, Little flower,Nehru school in the early 1980s. Then Kendriya vidyalya(central school) was started in an old building at one of the ends of the town. This school has shifted to Hira Nagar now. DAV school also started during the same time and is an established institute now. Him academy brought one of the major revolutions in this town when Professor Lakhanpal left his job at GDC hamirpur to start his own venture. Now they offer a variety of courses.

The town is also known for its long bazaar starting from Gandhi chowk to subji mandi, shiv mandir and finally ends at Bhota chowk.(though it now extends beyond it). Banka Babu, Noorie and Khannu were known names to the town residents in the 1990s. I am not aware if they are alive now. Baddu sweets in sabji mandi was a famous shop named after its owner till Sai sweets changed the standards in the 1990s. Swagat Enterprizes one of the shops in upper bazaar started in 1994 and is now one of biggest shop in the whole bazaar. NIFD and other institutes in the town have added value to the people and place. Not to forget the Jalebi shop in upper bazaar, The taste is one of its kind.
