B'Day is the second studio album by American R&B singer Beyoncé, released by Columbia Records on September 1, 2006 (see 2006 in music) outside North America, on September 4, 2006 worldwide, and on September 5, 2006 in Canada and the United States. The album's title comes from the fact that September 4, the date of worldwide release, is Beyoncé's birthday (2006 being her 25th). B'Day won the award for "Best Contemporary R&B Album" at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. A two-CD deluxe edition of the album, including previously unreleased material in English and Spanish, was released on April 3 2007.[19]

History

Production

Knowles had "bottled up so many things, so many emotions, so many ideas", though at the same time feeling that she "didn't want to do another album like Dangerously in Love because that's boring", that she decided to leave her vacation early to record the album in two weeks, recording three songs a day. She did this without telling her father/manager Mathew Knowles or her record label, Columbia Records. At that time Knowles had booked the whole New York City Sony Studios, simultaneously recording with an "all-star team of producers", including Rodney Jerkins, Rich Harrison, The Neptunes, Stargate, Cameron Wallace, Walter Milsap, and Swizz Beatz. Rapper T.I. also joined the sessions to record a verse for "Upgrade U", but like Lil Wayne he did not make the cut on B'Day.[20][21][22][23]

"Resentment" is a cover of a song originally recorded by Victoria Beckham. The track, which was also covered by Jazmine Sullivan in 2004, appeared on the The Real Beckhams DVD release as a bonus song. It features slightly altered lyrics, and thus a writing credit for Knowles.

Chart performance

B'Day debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 with first week sales of 541,000 copies, and at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[24] In the UK it peaked at number three on its release After being reduced in price for Christmas and January sales however, B'Day re-entered the top twenty and later received a platinum certificate. According to media traffic, B'Day was the twelfth biggest selling album of 2006 worldwide.[25] When the album was re-released with new material, It debut at number 1 again for Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart The first single from the album was "Déjà Vu", a 1970s funk-influenced uptempo track featuring Jay-Z. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also became Beyonce's second UK number-one hit. "Ring the Alarm", the second single, peaked at number eleven on the Hot 100, and at number three on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It was not released outside the U.S. "Irreplaceable", the third U.S. single and second non-U.S. single, was at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks in succession, and topped the United World Chart for twelve weeks. During the chart run of "Irreplaceable", "Upgrade U" (also featuring Jay-Z) was a radio hit, debuting on the Billboard Hot 100 without an official release. The song reached number fifty-nine on the Hot 100 and peaked at number eleven on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[26]

"Beautiful Liar", Beyoncé's duet with Shakira, was the first single from the re-release of B'Day, and the fourth single from the album overall. The single made the top five in the U.S and became the second B'Day single to top the UK Singles Chart, holding the position for three weeks. The "Beautiful Liar" and "Upgrade U" videos (off the B'Day Anthology Video Album) were premiered on February 28 on BET's 106 & Park to promote the deluxe edition of B'Day. In a similar fashion to "Upgrade U", "Get Me Bodied" entered the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart without any official promotion, peaking at number forty-seven, and it entered the Billboard Hot 100. After its radio success, "Get Me Bodied" was released as the fifth U.S. single from B'Day. The video is included on the B'Day Video Anthology. The fifth non-U.S. single was "Green Light", which has had commercial success in countries such as the UK.

B'Day was nominated for five Grammy Awards, including "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" for "Ring the Alarm", "Best R&B Song" for "Déjà Vu", "Best Contemporary R&B Album", "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration" for "Déjà Vu", and "Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical" for "Déjà Vu" (Freemasons club mix - no rap) (remixed by Russell Small and James Wiltshire). It won "Best Contemporary R&B Album".

Deluxe edition

Columbia Records released B'Day - Deluxe Edition, an expanded two-CD edition of R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles's B'Day, on Tuesday, April 3 2007 in the U.S. and on Monday, April 23 2007 in the UK.[27] In addition to the original twelve tracks from the album, disc one features five brand-new songs in English and disc two features six new Spanish language tracks. The album also featuers a cover of Des'ree's "Kissing You" renamed "Still in Love (Kissing You)". On the same day, a DVD featuring video clips for all tracks from B'Day was released as a Wal-Mart exclusive. With the release of the deluxe edition, B'Day made a jump from number sixty-nine back up to number six on the Billboard 200, selling 126,000 copies, and also went to number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.[28][29]

The Australian,[30] European, and Japanese[31] versions include both the deluxe edition of B'Day as well as the music video DVD.

In the week of April 22, the Deluxe Edition of B'Day and the Anthology Video album, which include the song "Still in Love (Kissing You)", were pulled from distribution because of a lawsuit filed by British singer Des'ree. The lawsuit is over Beyoncé's cover of Des'ree's "I'm Kissing You", which was given permission, but within certain limits; the song could not be used in video form, and the title should not be changed. On March 27, according to the complaint, they discovered that Beyoncé and her record label planned to include the song on the re-release anyway, changing the title of the song and making a video. In a letter to Beyoncé's lawyer and her distribution group Sony, the Royalty Network called the move "completely unacceptable".[32] The version of the Deluxe Edition with the track has been discontinued and replaced by a version with the international track "If" and placing "World Wide Woman" in the main track list.
