Neilson Grove Elementary is a public elementary school (K-7) in Delta, British Columbia, Canada, part of the School District 37 Delta. Neilson Grove is situated in the Captain's Cove Marina Ltd. neighborhood. The school serves the Marina Gardens Estates, Estate Gate, Southe Pointe, Chesapeake Landing, Woodward Landing, Cove Links, and nearby neighborhoods.

History

Neilson Grove opened in October, 2000. The new school was named after the family that diked and reclaimed the land on the east side of Ferry Road, George Edward Neilson. George Neilson and his son Edward, who had married Ebba Bowing of Westham Island, bought the 160 acres of marsh land on the east side of Ferry Road in 1942 and started the laborious work of diking, draining and breaking their new farm.

George Neilson passed away in 1949 as did Ed Neilson and his wife in 1985. By this time most of the farm had been sold and their home property on Westminster Avenue was inherited by their son Dr. C. G. Neilson and daughter Mrs. Charles Elliott.

School Goals 2007/2008

The most recent report card data of Neilson Grove (March 12, 2008), states that in the Reading section of Language Arts, 78% of Neilson Grove's primary students are either meeting or exceeding expectations (10% exceeding expectations and 68% meeting expectations).

Intermediate students also fared well, with 47% of students achieving an A or a B in the Reading section of Language Arts, and 42% achieving a C+ or a C.

This year, four Neilson Grove students: Antony Tsui, Presley Jang, Kean Ring, and Pearce Hannah, were selected from the Delta School District "Minds on Discovery" Science Fair to represent Neilson Grove Elementary School and the School District 37 Delta to compete against other students of School District 36 Surrey and School District 37 Delta at the South Fraser Regional Science Fair, which is held annually at Simon Fraser University (Surrey Campus) on April 3 and April 4. At the South Fraser Regional Science Fair, judges will select up to 8 students (expenses paid) to the Canada Wide Science Fair in Ottawa, Ontario, May 2008.

Neilson Grove also participates in the annual Canadian National Mathematics League contests for grades 5-7 (sometimes grade 4), which lots of other great schools such as Vancouver College and Crofton House School, also participate in.

This year Neilson Grove has been ranked 37th place by the Fraser Institute on the British Columbia Elementary Schools Report Card, which was surprisingly ranked higher than most independent schools, such as Vancouver College (53rd place), Sacred Heart (140th place), Southpointe (112nd place), and so on. Visit the Vancouver Sun for their special article and a two page spread of B.C. elementary school overall rankings.

Athletic Achievement

In the school year of 2006/2007, a group of three grade 5 boys: Cooper Pysh, Arjun Rai, and Jake Blane, won first place in the annual Delta Parks, Recreation and Culture Basketball Hoop Shoot. This school year, 2007/2008, a group of three grade 7 girls: Jody Lee, Tessa Vincent, and Kennedy Britz, won first place in the annual Delta Parks, Recreation and Culture Basketball Hoop Shoot.

It is the first time ever in Neilson Grove history that the Grade 6/7 Boys' Basketball Team: James Brunton, Nic Bunch, Jordy Cunningham, Aiden Ha (Gr. 6), Pearce Hannah, Matt Holmes, Presley Jang, Justin Khuu (Gr. 6), Brock Morgan (Gr. 6), Christian Plain, Kean Ring, Antony Tsui, and Michael Warn of 2007/2008, won the season tournament against seven other South Delta public schools held at Sacred Heart. Most importantly, none of this could've happened without the coach, Grant Cunningham, who dedicated his time, enthusiasm, and expertise as a coach and team leader. For this great achievement, they will be posted in the sports section of the local Delta newspaper, the Delta Optimist.

Neilson Grove staff selects a few (1-2 normally) of extraordinary Grade 7 students and are presented the most honorable award: The Neilson Grove Award (a.k.a. The Aileen Molloy Award) during the Grade 7 Graduation Ceremony.

There is also a monthly award for any students from each grade that deserves to be recognized. These awards are the Neilson Grove Recognition Awards.

Childcare Facility

Bright Eyes Academy, Ladner's fastest growing childcare facility, is located at Neilson Grove Elementary. It benefits parents who have toddlers, who needs to be taken care of, while they go to work. Lots of Neilson Grove students attend Bright Eyes Academy, whose parents get off late at work or leave home early for work.
