This is a list of backup software (software that performs data backups) and providers of managed backup services.
Free software
Programs listed here have a Free Software compatible or Open Source license. As freeware is proprietary, freeware applications are listed under the proprietary section.
For large networks of systems
- AMANDA BSD
- BackupPC GPL
- Bacula GPL - computer program suite.
- RESTORE GPL - an open-source project for heterogeneous system backup and restore.
- Venti Open Source - developed originally as part of Plan 9 from Bell Labs but now available for uUnix-like systems as part of Plan 9 from User Space.
For small networks of systems
- duplicity GPL - Makes remote encrypted backups using rsync and gnupg.
- dump - The classic UNIX filesystem dumper.
- tar - The classic UNIX file aggregator. Work with gzip in a pipe to create tar, tar.gz (tgz) archives.
- cpio - Unix/Linux archiver.
- DAR GPL - Disk Archiver. Supports multi-volume compressed archives. Dump, Tar, cpio, afio and DAR support piping and can be used over a network.
- rsync GPL - tool for maintaining mirrors.
For single systems
- Areca Backup GPL - supports FTP & FTPs, compression (Zip64), encryption (Triple DES & AES), incremental backups - Java based.
- Cobian Backup Mozilla Public License 1.1 - Version 8 is opensource
- FlyBack GPL - rsync based, UI modeled after Time Machine (Apple software).
