Monsters vs. Aliens (also known as Monsters vs. Aliens in 3D) is an upcoming 2009 computer-animated 3-D feature film from DreamWorks Animation. This will be the first computer animated movie which will be produced in real 3-D instead of converting the film into 3-D after it is finished, which will add $15 million extra to the film's budget.[2] The trailer was seen with the movie Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. The film was scheduled for a December 19, 2008 release, but they scheduled it into a March 27, 2009 release. The film is rated PG for "Sci-fi Action, Some Crude Humor, and Mild Language."

Monsters vs. Aliens is starring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Rainn Wilson, Stephen Colbert and Kiefer Sutherland.

The release date was moved up to prevent competition with James Cameron's upcoming Avatar.[1]

Plot

When California resident Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon) of Modesto, California (a medium-sized city 100 miles East of San Francisco) grows to 49 ft 11 in (because of being hit by a meteor while being late for her wedding), she is labelled a monster and captured by the military. She is remanded to an institution that houses other monsters: Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D., an insect-headed mad scientist (Hugh Laurie), the Missing Link, a 20,000-year-old fish-man (Will Arnett), B.O.B., a gelatin-like, jolly, indestructible monster (Seth Rogen) and Insectosaurus, a fuzzy bug that stands at 350 feet tall, making even Susan look tiny by comparison. When a UFO lands and an alien overlord named Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson) demands that Earth be given to them, General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland) suggests to the President (Stephen Colbert) that the monsters can provide the firepower to defeat the aliens.

Cast and characters

Monsters/Aliens

  • Reese Witherspoon as Susan Murphy (Ginormica): She was hit by a meteor filled with a strange substance that mutated her DNA, causing her to grow 49 feet 11 inches tall.
  • Will Arnett as The Missing Link: A 20,000 year-old frozen fish-ape hybrid; a jock in his prime, but now rather out of shape.
  • Insectosaurus: Transformed by nuclear radiation from a one inch grub into a 350-foot monster.
  • Rainn Wilson as Gallaxhar: An alien leader who plans to take over the planet Earth. He is served by an army of self-clones.

Humans

  • Stephen Colbert as President Hathaway: The President of the United States. He does not want to go down into history as the one in office when the world came to an end, and therefore agrees with General Monger's plan to use his captured monsters against the aliens.
  • Kiefer Sutherland as General W.R. Monger: Comes up with a plan to let the imprisoned monsters fight the aliens.
  • Paul Rudd as Derek Dietl: Susan Murphy's fiancé.

Format

As of Monsters vs. Aliens, all feature films released by DreamWorks Animation will be produced in a stereoscopic 3-D format.[3]

In addition, DreamWorks ran a 3-D promotional trailer before halftime of Super Bowl XLIII on NBC on February 1, 2009.

Video game

A video game is known to be coming out by March 2009. It will be the last Dreamworks film video game made by Activision, though the Nintendo DS version will be published by Amaze Entertainment. It is due for release on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, Wii and PlayStation Portable. The game allows fans to play through scenes from the movie as The Missing Link, B.O.B., and Susan/Ginormica and features drop-in/out co-op. Music was composed by Jim Dooley.
