General Information

GameSurge is a popular Internet Relay Chat network devoted to the Internet gaming community. This is for multi-player games played over the Internet, including MMORPGs (Massively Multi-play Online RolePlaying Games) GameSurge currently averages approximately 27,000 users at any given time.

Services

GameSurge runs a feature-rich package of services known as srvx, which were written by GameSurge's development staff from scratch in C.

GameSurge provides four user-accessible services:

  • AuthServ, which provides authentication for other services on the network and allows users to use an account that allows them to maintain channel access. In the interests of providing a service directed toward gaming (and thus allowing users to easily switch clan/team/guild tags), GameSurge does not provide nick registration.
  • ChanServ, which provides facilities such as event logging and advanced user/ban management.
  • HelpServ bots, which manage support requests in certain channels, which are dealt with as a FIFO queue.
    • HelpServ, in the #support channel, for general user support.
    • RegServ, in the #registration channel, for the specific purpose of channel registration.
    • Other HelpServ bots in miscellaneous help channels throughout the network.
  • HostServ, which provides free "titles" to users wishing to use cloaked hosts. See the GameSurge Titles page for details.

History

Originally known as GamesNET before merging with the ProGamePlayer Network to form GameSurge. The merge was due to a legal dispute over the domain name gamesnet.net and common interests between the two networks. GameSurge (while still known as GamesNET) originally gained popularity as a home for the North American Quake Team Fortress community. This is turn led to its popularity with players of Half-Life's Team Fortress Classic, which in turn led to it being the standard network for players of Counter-Strike. As Counter-Strike's player base, and therefore clan community swelled, so did GameSurge's user base. During Counter-Strike's beta days, there were "release parties" for new versions.
