A tag has been placed on Oregon (fictional ship) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Proposed deletion of Oregon (fictional ship)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Oregon (fictional ship), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

No reliable sources to establish notability of an in-universe item (apparently from a Clive Cussler book?)

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. tedder (talk) 23:06, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

i see you are new to wikipedia, & have not recieved a very warm welcome. i wish i could say that this was unusual, but it isn't. i just wanted to let you know that as a former noob who survived the initiation, you have my sympathizes, & i hope you will stick around. one tip: since it seems likely that you are going to lose the afd debate (been there, lost many times, the debates are kind of stacked with ppl who like to delete things), you could move a copy of the page to your userspace, while you are working on it. if you don't know how to do that, feel free to contact me & i can talk you thru it, or copy the page over for you.

good luck & hope you'll still be here to read this

The Oregon is the name of a (seagoing) ship in an eponymous series of fiction novels, The Oregon Files. The series was written by author Clive Cussler, co-author Craig Dirgo, and later another co-author, Jack Du Brul.

[edit] Overview

The Oregon is a high tech ship owned by a private secret service organization called 'the Corporation'. It is disguised as a rusty old tramp steamer, to add to its appearance of authenticity this disguise is highly detailed; including a fake mess hall, a captain's cabin with smoke infused substances, a dis-functional toilet, and a painting of a depressing velvet clown. In reality it is a hive of activity with luxury facilities and top of the range technical machines. It includes Cruise missiles, torpedoes, 30mm Gatling guns, a 120mm cannon and .30-caliber machine guns all remotely operated. The ship is powered by magnetohydrodynamic engines. Its control centre is said to have the feel of the starship Enterprise.

Member in Focus
  • Hi, I have been a member of this project for a few months now, and after finally gotten to grips with Wikipedia I have decided to take on the role of writing this newsletter (currently by myself, but any help would be appreciated) with some helpful tips from The Ed17. After undertaking this I realise why it was so difficult to keep it going. I will, however, persevere. From the members, I would encourage you to vote in the Coordinator elections, and take up roles at the Job Centre. The project has struggled recently, and I am hoping to try and revive it. If, with the publication of this newsletter, there are a couple of things that aren't quite up-to-date (like the Collaboration part), you can be certain I am working on it. I will be trying to get a newsletter out on around the 21st of every month. Finally, thanks for the help Ed. Regards, Alan16 (talk) 23:41, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Current debates

Novel related news
  • American writer Michael Hemp wins the 2009 Next Generation Indie Book Award in the Action/Adventure category for his novel, The Nadjik Pheromone.
From the Outreach Department

This is my first attempt at the newsletter, and I hope it at least gets close to the previous high standards set by Kevinalewis and The Ed17. I will once again encourage you to vote in the Coordinator elections, as I hope it could be the springboard to revitalise the project. I'll keep working on the newsletter, partially because I like the stress, and partially because we need it to get members and would-be members interested. Hopefully the start of great things. Regards, Alan.

Collaboration of the Month
  • Because there has been little activity on our Collaboration page for a long time, I have made an executive decision, and chosen The Tin Drum as our Collaboration of the month.
All members are asked to assist where they can.
The next collaboration is due for selection on 21 July, 2009 so nominate and vote.

The Oregon Files (existing page)

The Oregon Files are a group of novels written by author Clive Cussler and co-author Craig Dirgo and later co-author Jack Du Brul. The books follow the mysterious "Corporation" and its leader Juan Cabrillo. The "Oregon Files" come from the name of the boat on which the Corporation is based, the Oregon. The boat's name is based on the current State University of New York Maritime College training ship the TS Empire State VI, the ships original name was the SS Oregon.

Synopsis from Penguin books: Juan Cabrillo is Chairman of the Corporation, a special US Government-sponsored group that operates out of a ship called Oregon, a marvel of scientific research equipment bristling with state-of-the-art weaponry - but disguised as a heap of junk. Cabrillo and his crew of mercenaries with a conscience are able to cross the high seas in their 'rusting' tub unmolested, seeking out those beyond the arms of the law and dealing out justice to any who would plot chaos on a global scale.

Books

The crew of the Oregon first appeared in Flood Tide. The main Oregon Files series is:

The Oregon

The Oregon is the name of a high tech (seagoing) ship owned by a private secret service organization called 'the Corporation' in various Clive Cussler Novels including an eponymous series of fiction novels, The Oregon Files. It made its first appearance in the novel Flood Tide (although the Oregon in Flood Tide was scrapped due to battle damage so the ship in the latter books was actually its replacement) and later had had the said series based on it and its crew. The series was written by author Clive Cussler, co-author Craig Dirgo, and later another co-author, Jack Du Brul.

Disguised

It is very successfully disguised as a rusty old tramp steamer which sails under an Iranian flag. It is approximately 560 feet long and when it's ballast tanks are filled it weighs around 11,000 pounds. It's decks are littered with junk and it has five rusted derricks. To add to its appearance of authenticity this disguise is highly detailed; including a fake mess hall, a captain's cabin with smoke infused substances, a dis-functional toilet, and a painting of a depressing velvet clown and a wheel house with cigarette burns, dead flies and a table with broken clips to fool harbor pilots. It also has mechanical staged engine tremors and fake smoke from it's smoke stack to add to the appearance of an aged ship.

In Reality

It is a hive of activity with luxury facilities and top of the range technical machines. Some of it's facilities are a running track around the perimeter of the ship, a high class fitness area, ballast tanks that can be filled and used as an Olympic length swimming pool and various other things. It includes Cruise missiles, torpedoes, 30mm Gatling guns, a 120mm cannon and .30-caliber machine guns all remotely operated. The ship is powered by magnetohydrodynamic engines. Its control centre is said to have the feel of the starship Enterprise.

The Corporation Team

The Corporation is a for profit group of mercenaries that are hired by countries and large companies around the world who are willing to pay large sums of money for tricky jobs. All members are shareholders and there is no real distinction between officers and crew. All staff are highly trained and well educated ex US military members.

  • Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo - Tall in his 40's with pixie blue eyes and a rough complexion. Blond haired with a crew cut and a western cowboy style mustache. Ex CIA and partner with Langston Overholt IV founder and now Chairman of the Corporation.
  • Max Hanley - President of the Corporation and director of all operating systems. He is divorced with 2 kids.
  • Richard 'Dick' Truitt - Vice President of the Corporation (Retired between Book 2 and 3)
  • Linda Ross - Five-foot-eight, 130 pounds described as 'pretty but not a head turner' and a person who works hard and exercises to stay fit but doesn't waste time with makeup. Ex lieutenant in the US Navy now Vice President of the Corporation (as of Book 3, formerly Security and Surveillance)

Operatives

  • George 'Gomez' Adams - Helicopter Pilot (Retired)
  • Rick Barrett - Assistant Chef

Golden Buddha (existing page)

Plot summary

In Golden Buddha, Juan Cabrillo embarks on his first mission in 'The Oregon Files' (although it is made clear that this is not the first mission for the team through references to other missions and it's part in the book Flood Tide). The team is hired to find and recover a stolen statue, the Golden Buddha, stolen in 1959 from the Dali Lama. The success of the team will determine the future of Tibet. Whilst playing the Russians off against the Chinese, the team must put their lives at risk in order to complete the mission. In their state-of-the-art vessel, disguised as a rusting heap of junk, they sail from Cuba to Macau, and there the team use their cunning and wit to outsmart a billionaire—Stanley Ho—and the Macau police. They also swindle a 100 million dollars worth of bonds from billionaire Marcus Friday and convince the UN to ratify the military coup in Tibet.

Major Characters

Protagonists

Although all the Corporation are involved in the Buddha heist and freeing of Tibet they are assisted by the Dali Lama and the Tibetan group "Dungkar". They are also helped by a flight attendant Rhonda Rosselli and Judy Michaels and Tracy Pilston made a significant sacrifice in the Friday ripoff. And Michael Halpert also sacrificed his reputation with the crew in the fake Buddha heist.

Antagonists

The major villain in Golden Buddha is the Chinese as the Corporation is fighting to free Tibet. They must steal the (fake) Buddha from Macau Billionaire Stanley Ho while avoiding Ling Po, a detective with the Macau police. The Corporation also tangle with software Billionaire Marcus Friday, who they swindle of a hundred million dollars worth of bonds. And steal the real Buddha from corrupt art dealer, Winston Spencer.

Germans on the Australian Goldfields

The German migrants played an important role in the Australian Gold Rush period. By 1854 the population of Victoria was around 66,700, 2.46% of these were German and 42% of these were looking for gold.

Discovery of gold in VIC

In January 1851 Dr Hermann Bruhn, a German doctor traveling in Victoria, received £500 in recognition of his journey too and publicizing of the Clunes gold discovery.

German Terminology on the Goldfields

In a book by Raffaello Carboni's writen during and after the Eureka Stockade, he uses a word spelled both as "shicer" and "scheisser", a word used by miners for a claim were no gold was found (derived from the German verb scheissen). Diggers who were not having any luck would drink a toast "To our last bloody shicer!", in the hope that they would mine a successful claim. In November 1855 a goldfield was opened near Blackwood that was known as Shicer Gully. There were two Shicer Gullys in the Castlemaine area, and a gold field named Shicer Gully was opened at Wedderburn in 1853, and another Shicer Gully was opened at Smythesdale in August 1860.

Famous German Nugget Discoveries

On 31st May 1870 on the Berlin-Rheola diggings, S. Schlossmann, J. Davis and another miner named Rendisch dug up the eighth-largest gold nugget ever found in Victoria; it was named the Viscount Canterbury and weighed 1114 troy ounces (34.6 kg).
