Past Masters is a two-volume compilation album set by The Beatles released in 1988 following the 1987 release of the band's original UK studio albums on CD. Past Masters collects tracks that were not released on studio albums, so that the band's entire catalogue could be available on CD. Past Masters contains every song commercially released by EMI from 1962 to 1970 that was not included on the 12 original UK Beatles albums or the Magical Mystery Tour LP. The majority of the album consists of the A- and B-sides of the band's singles, including single versions of songs that appeared differently on albums. The full contents of the UK-only Long Tall Sally EP, two German language recordings, a song recorded for the American market and a track used on a charity compilation complete the collection.

Past Masters was initially released as two separate CDs on 7 March 1988, with a two-LP vinyl set combining both volumes following on 24 October 1988 in the United States and 10 November 1988 in the United Kingdom. The original CDs were included in 1988 The Beatles Box Set. A two-CD set of both volumes with two additional stereo tracks was released on 9 September 2009 as part of the Beatles Remastered project [1]. This release was included in The Beatles Stereo Box Set. In The Beatles in Mono box set, an album entitled Mono Masters took the place of Past Masters, containing a similar track list in original mono mixes. The track lists of the second disc of the two sets are different, reflecting the fact that later songs were mixed or released only in stereo.

This was the final Beatles album released as a gramophone record before the recording industry stopped manufacturing them in large quantities in favour of the compact disc format of prerecorded music. Subsequent new Beatle albums were released in the vinyl record format in small quantities as limited editions.

  • Tracks 8 and 9 on side one are labeled "mono" on the packaging but are actually extremely narrow stereo mixes created in 1988. They are not the original mono mixes released in Germany in 1964.[3]

Volume two contains tracks from several Beatles singles (including B-sides) and one album track (the "Wildlife" version of "Across the Universe") that were originally released between 1965 and 1970.

Remastered release

Both volumes of Past Masters were released on a two-CD set as a part of The Beatles remastered catalogue on 9 September 2009, with two tracks previously issued on CD in mono only compiled in stereo: "From Me to You" and "Thank You Girl".[2] It is also included in The Beatles Stereo Box Set.

Mono Masters

A mono compilation titled Mono Masters was included as part of The Beatles in Mono box set.[4] The premise of this box set was to compile only Beatles material which was released or prepared for release with a dedicated mono mix (the set excludes later albums mixed and released only in stereo). As a result, the tracklisting for Mono Masters differs from Past Masters on the second half of disc two, omitting some later songs that never had a mono mix, and adding several songs released on stereo-only albums that had unreleased mono mixes. Tracks 9-12 and 15 were prepared in March 1969 for release as a 7" mono Yellow Submarine EP, but due to poor reception of the full album, the project was abandoned. Subsequently, the tracks were only released in stereo (and in a mono mixdown of the stereo mix), while the true mono mixes remained unreleased. "Get Back" (with B-side "Don't Let Me Down") was the final Beatles single mixed for mono format. It was released in the UK in mono, though the U.S. release was in stereo. Thus, the stereo singles included on Past Masters are omitted on this release.
