why are you submitting Huntster for deletion and blocking him and everything? I thought you two were friends. why are you doing this?

Revision as of 19:45, 8 January 2010

This page is where I exchange comments with friends and other editors. All users are welcome to leave a message. Unless you state otherwise, I'll assume we are (or can be) friends. Feel free to leave any notes, suggestions, complaints, or anything else. I respond to almost anything reasonable, (but I'll only respond to vandalism or stupidity if it's funny). Note: I frequently take long breaks from AN, AN/I, RfA, and other drama related pages. If you feel I should know about something, or would like my views on something, do not assume that I am aware of anything in particular, or that I am simply ignoring you or a topic. Drop me a note here, and I'd be happy to look.

The orange "New messages" banner is useful. If you want my attention, edit this page. If I want your attention, I will edit your page. I'll reply here out of politeness, so I won't interrupt whatever you're doing. If you're interested in what I said, watch this page and find out. If a reply appears to be important to you, I'll likely copy it to your talk page. If you prefer to keep talk on your page, copy the {{tb}} tag and paste it here. I like to get messages, but the bottom line is: It doesn't really matter to me where you leave it, And if you have something to say you would like me to read, the big yellow banner is kind of hard to miss...

To Follow up on

Since we're maturing as a community, maybe it's time to revisit these things. — Ched :  ?  15:02, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

WikiVoices Arbcom interviews

I noticed a comment of yours in my watchlist ... Just a holiday drive-by note to say I found the interviews very "good" things to hear in such contexts ... But sorry there were so few (and therefore perhaps an unfair advantage, but such is the way of the world).

Enough yapping ... Happy holidays to you ... with a special pat for Stick. (And, yes, that's a cool barnstar.) Proofreader77 (talk) 21:27, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Hey, the more we communicate with each other, the better we'll be as a collective group. Text as it is lacks various voice inflections and such, so I appreciate the opportunity to "hear" a person state his thoughts. I thank you for the chance to hear a few folks discuss their views. All my best, Ched — Ched :  ?  03:08, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
(Reply to your message on my talk) Excuse confusion. I didn't do the interviews—just agreeing with you that they are good things. (But, as I said, too bad they weren't available for all candidates*— and to some extent that may not be fair. ) Proofreader77 (talk) 07:52, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Great News!!!

Bacon Materializer

Unable to resist bacon's temptations, rogue editors have kicked off the Bacon Challenge 2010 before the New Year even starts! This is a fun and collegial event and all are welcome. There are many non-pork articles for editors who enjoy some sizzle but object to or don't like messing with pig products. This year's event also includes a Bacon WikiCup 2010 for those who may want to keep score and enjoy engaging in friendly competition. Given the critical importance of this subject matter, I know you will want to participate, so remember to sign up today and get started A.S.A.P. ALL ARE WELCOME!!! The more the merrier.

I could have sworn I already dropped one of these notifications here... very strange. ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:34, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Re: Just a Note

Thanks for the kind words :) I hear you on the busy R/L thing...I've only been on a few hours in the past couple of weeks. So far behind on my watchlist I don't know where to start. November and December always seem to be a much busier than usual (odd considering school is about over), and my moving hasn't helped at all. Perhaps I'll be able to get back into things soon, and hopefully you can as well :) Huntster (t @ c) 05:51, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Planning Discussions Now Finished Regarding DC Meetup #9

  • You are receiving this message either because you received a similar one before and didn't object, or you requested to receive a similar one in the future. If you don't wish to receive this message again, then please let me know either on my talk page or here.
  • Planning — for the most part, anyway — is now finished (see here) for DC Meetup #9.

Coffee, Re: rethinking my last remark

Ched, I was making a point. The remark I made was the same one that brought the matter to WQA. Incidentally, if you felt the need to tell me to rethink it, objectively you probably should do the same to Coffee; but the matter seems to be resolved anyway for now. Equazcion (talk) 23:17, 10 Dec 2009 (UTC)

I hope it's resolved. It's just that 2 wrongs are never going to make a "right" (although 3 lefts will). I'll admit, I personally happen to like Coffee a great deal - I respect what he's done, and where he's come from, but I won't get into details there. Sure, I admit that his wording could have been less than optimal - but just like I got my head handed to me for trying to get another editor unblocked for a "shit for brains" remark a while back; I just don't want to see things escalate here either. Yea, sometimes tensions build up (for whatever reasons), and things get said that shouldn't be. We're all here to build an encyclopedia, and I hate seeing those kind of USENET flamewars get started. We all have our "trigger words" and phrases that piss us off, and we all want to respond in kind when provoked. But the bottom line is that it's not going to get anyone anywhere. Any type of "dick-measuring" over the Internet is simply going to be a waste of keystrokes. It's only going to increase anger levels all the way around. Eventually - somebody is going to end up getting blocked by some passing admin that either isn't aware of the entire situation, has a particular bias, or simply doesn't care. I hate seeing folks get blocked, and if I can possibly help it, I'll try to avoid it. And if possible, I'll even try to diffuse a tense situation when I see it. I'm just asking that we all try to show a modicum of respect for each other; even those we don't agree with. — Ched :  ?  23:35, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
and on a side note: yes, I've spoken to Coffee privately about the situation. I offered the best advice I could; so we'll see how things go. — Ched :  ?  23:39, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
You're correct about two wrongs not making a right. This wasn't due to my having felt provoked, and I normally wouldn't have made a comment like that just because someone else did. It was part of a larger effort. I was hoping to show Coffee how it feels to be on the receiving end of a comment like that. Your response to it was actually the most useful result of it -- it basically showed that a comment like that does indeed need to be rethought. Who knows, maybe it worked and that's why he acquiesced shortly after. Equazcion (talk) 23:50, 10 Dec 2009 (UTC)
And ditto on maintaining respect during arguments. We need more of that here; though sometimes I think that could be a pipe dream. Equazcion (talk) 23:52, 10 Dec 2009 (UTC)

Hi! As you have expressed an interest in the initial The Great Wikipedia Dramaout, you're being notified because we are currently planning another one in January! We hope to have an even greater level of participation this time around, and we need your help. If you're still interested please sign up now at Wikipedia:The Great Wikipedia Dramaout/2nd. Thanks, and Happy Holidays! JCbot (talk) 04:28, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for caring

I'd just like to thank you for involving yourself in the discussion surrounding what now looks like Ottava Rima's inevitable ban, and extending a helping hand to Ottava. I'm frankly horrified at some of the proposed motions, and what seems to me to be the dishonesty underpinning their justification, but that's another story. As everyone knows, bans are completely unenforceable anyway, and only affect principled editors, those who will not simply return under a new name, as many others would do. --Malleus Fatuorum 18:20, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

wow .. I'm not sure what to say here. Thank you Mal. I do value those kind and encouraging words - because I realize that they don't come lightly. I am sorely tempted to blubber on, but it would not do justice to what you say - so I'll just say "Thank you". Cheers and all my best. — Ched :  ?  20:21, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Note the redness of the link. You've expressed interest in doing something at Update, and this might be a good time to step in, because I'm going to stop tracking the Conduct policies at WP:Update/1 starting in January. (Watchlisting). - Dank (push to talk) 13:51, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

I'll do my best Dan. :-) — Ched :  ?  18:48, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Okay, great, I won't hold you to it, but I will announce that I'm going to be doing just Content and Deletion policies at Update/1. - Dank (push to talk) 00:09, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
P.S. and Enforcement. - Dank (push to talk) 15:34, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
One more thing ... trying to figure out where to put stuff. WP:Update/1 has reports twice a month, and I don't use the last version of the month if it doesn't seem to me to have consensus. WP:Update/2 has reports at the end of the month, always using the last version. Which style appeals to you more? If the latter, then I'll go ahead and move the conduct policies to WP:Update/2 (I've done the mid-month reports already). - Dank (push to talk) 15:57, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Copyedit request

Would you copyedit David Pearson? I just posted a complete rewrite to the article and I nominated it for both Did You Know and Good Article. It will be my 100th DYK (includes my work plus nominations)! Thank you!

I hope you are doing good. I am, and I'm looking forward to Christmas. My ISP has canceled service for my area, so I'm forced to find another. I had already been looking, so that's a good thing. My options are very limited since almost no one can get a good signal in my (rural) area (I explored about 7 options!). DSL is not an option except in nearby cities. I think I found one that has a signal originating on city water tower less than 5 miles away; they're coming out on December 31st for installation. I have the option of canceling if they can't find a good signal. If that doesn't work, I'm going to a satellite provider. Satellite will take time to arrange, so there's a chance that I'll have no internet starting December 31st. As usual, please respond here on your talk page to keep everything together. Royalbroil 14:04, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

I'd be glad to RB! I'll have a go at it this evening. Very sorry to hear about your ISP woes, and I hope you'll be able to get something resolved with it. All my best holiday wishes to you, and hope you're back to running on all 8 cylinders ASAP. :) — Ched :  ?  18:51, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for doing the copyedit! My internet has been running like a 2 cylinder putt putt tractor with a corroded battery cable since June or July - they're dropping the signal on Dec 30th. I wasn't able to get my prospective new ISP to install until Dec 31st. This change will be very good for me. My internet has been gone for the evening by 6:00 way too many times. I'd look at my monitor and wonder if they'll ever figure out the problem. No chance for editing Wikipedia or any other internet. So I got good at playing a certain PC game. I wish you a Merry Christmas! Royalbroil 22:17, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Wow - what a weekend IRL here RB. Sorry I didn't get to it yet, but I will certainly have a go at it very soon. Cheers, best, and Merry Christmas and enjoyable holidays to you. Hope the ISP issues get resolved for you quickly. — Ched :  ?  16:49, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Gharaibeh

Hey Ched...I just came across the article Gharaibeh, which when I found it may just have been one of the most amazingly messed up articles I've ever stumbled across, both formatting- and content-wise. These are the edits I made to it, and was wondering if you might care to have a go at it as well! Muahaha. Huntster (t @ c) 12:43, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

mmm ... looks like an intriguing challenge - I accept. It will have to wait a couple days, and I do have to get to the David Pearson article first - but I'll certainly take a shot at it. It's not a topic I know anything about at the moment, but I look forward to learning about them. Thanks for a great item to work on Huntster - I'll get to it ASAP (holidays, work, etc. and all). Cheers buddy. — Ched :  ?  16:47, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Hi

Can you believe it? In a couple of days Generation Z will stop accepting new members! I can't believe it. Life is going so fast for me. Just dropping by :), Mr. Davis. How sad, that Z will grow up now and become ... who knows? TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 06:03, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

Hey there TO - yep, perhaps we're getting into generation "WP" now ...lol. Anyway, great to hear from you - hope you're having a wonderful start to the new year. I'll drop a little longer reply as soon as time permits. Cheers and best, — Ched :  ?  17:23, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Motorsport help needed

I bet you're a fan expert in this area like me! I'm working on an article for SpeedWeek (the ESPN program) in my 2nd sandbox. Do you have an references for it? It was a great show and I watched it whenever I could. That show was a big part with why I have such a broad background and interest in working on oddball racing topics. I find TONS of references to the show in blogs and forums, but reliable sources are weak. I hope you are doing well. My new ISP should be installing tomorrow (Thursday) morning and I'm very excited about it. Royalbroil 04:26, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Hey there RB - I'll take a look as soon as possible for some refs for that. Still would like to finish up the Pearson article too for smoothing things out a bit, work on some of the sentence stubs and all. Great refs there though - should get through GA without too much problem - may even be FA down the road some day. Anyway - I'll see what I can find for Speedweek ASAP. Hope the new year is starting well for you Cheers and best buddy. :-) — Ched :  ?  17:45, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Delayed response to your question

Hi: sorry for the delay; to answer your question about photography at LC (taken from their website): "Please observe restrictions on photography. Photography is permitted, EXCEPT at the Bibles, in the Main Reading Room overlook, and in the exhibitions."; basically you can take photos except in the areas they mention.--FeanorStar7 (talk) 07:11, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Holiday cheer

Happy belated holidays Ched. Hope your New Year is starting out well...I see you've been away since Dec 29. Don't party too much, now! Huntster (t @ c) 03:57, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Hey Huntster - my very best wishes to you as well buddy!!! Yep - been extremely busy lately; seems I have all the work I could ever want - and some that I wish I could afford to tell to take it elsewhere ... lol. Win7 seems to be popular these days, and folks trying to salvage old equipment for one more year as well. I prolly shouldn't complain - but it leaves me but a few moments to read through WP to keep up with what's going on - and NO time to do any quality editing lately. Actually I did have (quite) a few drinks at home on New Years Eve, but other than that - time just hasn't allowed me to enjoy the fruits of "buzzdom" like one would hope. 8-) .... anyway - I suspect things will slow for me here shortly - perhaps after the DC meetup I can get back to actually contributing productively to the project (one can hope anyway). Hope to be back at you here shortly my friend, and I hope the new year treats you very kindly. Cheers and as always - BEST, — Ched :  ?  17:31, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
