Cast

Plot

Mani Ratnam has reportedly shot a film that is a modern day version and a loose adaptation of the great Indian epic Ramayana which tells the story of Rama, whose wife Sita is abducted by the demon (Rākshasa) king of Lanka, Ravana. It is said that Raavanan will have a new twist on the Ramayana.[1] Mani Ratnam had earlier directed Thalapathi, which bore close resemblance to the Mahabharata.

Production

In 2008, Vikram was signed up to portray the male lead protagonist of Raavanan while Prithviraj Sukumaran was cast in the antagonist role. Whilst in Hindi, its role-reversal for Vikram, as he plays the antagonist and Abhishek Bachchan plays the protagonist. Aishwarya Rai will play the female lead in both versions of the film.

Shooting began in the southern part of India at the end of October 2008. During filming, Mani Ratnam became ill which delayed the filming for a few months in 2009.[2] However, the film began its last schedule in August 2009. The film finished filming and went into post production by October 2009.[3] Manikandan was hired as the film's DOP or cinematographer. However he was replaced in early 2009 by Santosh Sivan who has given the film a new look.[4][5] This film has numerous action scenes and stunts performed by the actors. The Dravidian martial art Kalarippayattu is also featured in the film.[6] Dancer Astad Deboo choreographed a passionate chase scene and tandav dance between Vikram and Aishwarya Bachchan for the film.[7][8] Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee designed Aishwarya Rai's costumes in the film.[9] Raavanan has been shot in numerous locations around India including the forests of Kerala, Ooty, Jhansi, Kolkata, Mahabaleshwari and in the Malshej Ghats in Maharashtra.[10][11][12]

A. R. Rahman scores the music and background score for both versions of the film. V. Manikandan and Santosh Sivan have handled the cinematography.

Release

The film is slated for a worldwide release on June 18, 2010.
