1913 – Russian American Igor Sikorsky flew the world's first multi-engine fixed-wing aircraft, the Russky Vityaz, which he designed himself.

1917 – Our Lady of Fátima: Ten-year-old Lúcia Santos (pictured middle) and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto reportedly began experiencing a Marian apparition near Fátima, Portugal.

1952 – The Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India, held its first sitting.

1981 – Mehmet Ali Ağca shot and critically wounded Pope John Paul II in Saint Peter's Square, Vatican City.

1985 – Eleven members of the black liberation group MOVE were killed when a police helicopter dropped a bomb on their house during a raid in Philadelphia.

2005 – Uzbek Interior Ministry and National Security Service troops fired into a crowd of protesters in Andijan, Uzbekistan, killing anywhere from 187, the official count of the government, to a reported 5,000 people.

1373 – English mystic Julian of Norwich recovered from a severe illness, during which she experienced a series of intense visions of Jesus Christ; later she would describe them in Revelations of Divine Love, the first known English language book written by a woman.

1779 – Russian and French mediators negotiated the Treaty of Teschen to end the War of the Bavarian Succession.

1888 – Princess Isabel (pictured) of the Empire of Brazil signed the Lei Áurea into law, formally abolishing slavery in Brazil.

1992 – Li Hongzhi introduced Falun Gong in a public lecture in Changchun, Jilin province, China.

2008 – Nine bombs placed by the heretofore-unknown terrorist group Indian Mujahideen exploded in 15 minutes in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.
