Professor S.M. Sayeed Raza (1890 – 1963) was born in village Desna of district [[Nalanda]] of [[Bihar]]. He was belonged to the family of scholars & well educated Landlord. His father, Late Hakim Syed Liaqat Hassan was Unani Physician. His cousin [[Syed Sulaiman Nadvi]] was Great Muslim scholar and was one of the eminent historian, greatest biographers of the Islamic [[prophet Muhammed]] (Pbuh), during his times & his other cousin Prof. Najeeb Asharf Nadvi was also eminent historian & writer.

He was graduated from [[Darul-uloom Nadwatul Ulama]] – Islamic Institute of thought & which is one of the major Islamic schools in Indian subcontinent.
Prof. S.M. Saeed Raza, joined as Professor & Head of [[Urdu]], [[Arabic]] and [[Persian languages]] in [[St. Xavier's College, Mumbai]] in 1922.


Desnavi was born on November 1, 1930 in village Desna of block Asthawan in [[Nalanda]] district [[Bihar]]<ref name="ibnlive.in"/>. He was belonged to the family of Great Muslim scholar [[Syed Sulaiman Nadvi]], who was one of the eminent historian and biographers of the Islamic prophet [[Muhammad]], during his times<ref name="ibnlive.in"/>. He was the 2nd son of late Prof. S.M. Saeed Raza, who was Professor of [[Urdu]], [[Arabic]] and [[Persian languages]] in [[St. Xavier's College, Mumbai]]. When Professor Raza joined the college, the College also included [[Urdu]] as a subject of study in 1922. From 1938 to 1942 it was a subject at the B. A. level. Knowing the importance of [[Urdu]] as a language of culture and integration, the authorities made arrangements for the Honours Course in Urdu.

Many famous scholars, poets and teachers were under his tutelage during their student days in [[St. Xavier's College, Mumbai]].


Desnavi had his primary education in [[Arrah]] town of [[Bihar]] state. After completing his Graduation & Post Graduation in First Division from [[St. Xavier's College, Mumbai]]<ref name="indianawaaz.com"/>, he joined Department of Urdu in Saifia Post Graduate College in February 1961. He became Professor and Head of the Urdu Department of Saifia P.G. College. He was well-known literary figure in India and in the Urdu world. He retired in 1990<ref name="indianawaaz.com"/>. He was also holding many Honorary positions as,<ref name="twocircles.net"/>
Professor Raza retired from [[St. Xavier's College, Mumbai]] in 1955. After retirement he was settled back to his village & done lot of social work for the development of the village. He died in Desna in 1963.

==Illness and Death==

Prof. Desnavi died at about 5 am on 7 July 2011 in a private hospital where he was admitted following complaints of old age related diseases. He is survived by his wife, three sons and four daughters and a large number of relatives and [[Literary]] friends to mourn his loss. He was buried to rest in Bada- Bagh graveyard in the evening after “Maghrib” prayers wherein a large number of literary personalities and elite of the town participated in his funeral procession.

He became Professor and Head of the Urdu Department of Saifia P.G. College. He was well-known literary figure in India and in the Urdu world. He retired in 1990[4]. Illness and Death

Prof. Desnavi died at about 5 am on 7 July 2011 in a private hospital where he was admitted following complaints of old age related diseases. He is survived by his wife, three sons and four daughters and a large number of relatives and Literary friends to mourn his loss. He was buried to rest in Bada- Bagh graveyard in the evening after “Maghrib” prayers wherein a large number of literary personalities and elite of the town participated in his funeral procession.
