Austin & Ally is an American sitcom that first aired on the Disney Channel on December 2, 2011. The series was created by Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert, the writers and producers of the Disney Channel sitcoms Sonny with a Chance and Jonas. Production for the pilot episode began in mid-February 2011, and on May 24, 2011, the Disney Channel announced that Austin & Ally had been picked up as a series. They initially ordered 13 episodes, though that number was later increased to 21. The first promo for the series was released on October 14, 2011, during the Disney Channel's Make Your Mark: The Ultimate Dance-Off event. A series preview followed the premiere of the Disney Channel Original Movie, Good Luck Charlie, It's Christmas!,[1] and the series officially premiered on December 4, 2011.[2] The show has been renewed for a second season, and will resume production in the summer of 2012.[3]

Premise

Set in Miami, Austin & Ally is a multi-camera comedy about the relationship formed by two very different musicians: extroverted singer and instrumentalist Austin Moon, who is constantly getting into trouble; and serious and talented songwriter Ally Dawson, who can sing but has an extreme case of stage fright. Austin becomes famous after he secretly records one of Ally's songs, creates a video for it with the help of his friend Dez, and posts it on the internet. However, he did so without Ally's knowledge, and once Ally, convinced by her friend Trish, takes credit for her song, Austin must convince her to write more songs for him. The two agree to work together and struggle with how to keep Austin's newfound fame and profit from it, with the help of Trish and Dez, while all four keep up with their high school and everyday lives.

The series has been described as a "pint-sized" version of HBO's comedy-drama Entourage.[4]

  • Ross Lynch as Austin Moon,[5] an aspiring singer who became an "overnight" Internet sensation. Austin's friends are Dez, Trish and Ally. He loves to sing and dance, and have fun. He tries to keep up with his career and his fame. He helps Ally when she has trouble writing a song and also with personal problems that arise. It is revealed in the episode 'Burglaries & Boobytraps', that his middle name is Monica. It is also revealed in "Filmmaking and Fear Breaking" that he has a fear of umbrellas because when his class went to a trip to the beach, he had an umbrella with him. At this point, he didn't have this fear. However, when a wind blows his umbrella and his pants away, the kids walk by and he gets laughed at. It is also revealed in this episode that his three favorite things are pancakes, LeBron James, and cheerleaders. Austin often pressures Ally to write new songs, which causes her to mess up and write bad songs, such as in the episode "Diners and Daters" in which Ally writes an embarrassing song that Austin sang to his co-worker and crush. He also has been known to do and like childish things such as liking stuffed animals, coloring in coloring books, and laughing at the word underwear.
  • Laura Marano as Ally Dawson,[6] an aspiring singer-songwriter with extreme stage fright. She wrote the first hit song that Austin performed. She works at her parents' music store, Sonic Boom. She is shown to have unusual habits, such as biting her hair when she's nervous, & cleaning when she's sad. She is currently writing songs for Austin. She also really likes pickles. She and Austin have become good friends, and they label their relationship as being "partners". Ally is also Trish's best friend, and she has a crush on Dallas, who initially works at the cell phone accessories cart. She has a pet cockatiel named Owen. Ally also has stagefright because in the episode "Filmmaking and Fear Breaking" she was so pressured that she thought the piano was going to eat her and blew her chance of being a famous musician, and ever since then Ally has been afraid of being on stage.
  • Raini Rodriguez as Trish,[7] Ally's best friend and Austin's manager. Her jobs change frequently due to her lack of effort and presence at work. Even though her jobs change a lot she takes her job as being Austin's manager very seriously. She has a complicated frenemy relationship with Dez. Her full name is revealed to be Patricia Maria de la Rosa in the episode "Club Owners & Quinceaneras". It is revealed in "Diners & Daters" that she is great at doing the robot.
  • Calum Worthy as Dez,[8] an aspiring director who films everything he can. He filmed Austin singing Ally's original song, and posted it online. He is Austin's best friend, and has a complicated frenemy relationship with Trish. He won a 20-pound hamburger-eating contest. He often pulls a variety of items from his backpack, ranging from a toaster to ten types of jelly, a basket of pickles and even a sub sandwich.Dez has a weird style of clothes because sometimes you see him wearing clown shoes to weird shirts.During the episode "Club Owners & Quinceaneras" he wore a giant poofy outfit because he thought since Trish was wearing something poofy he should too.
