"Idioteque"
Song

"Idioteque" is the eighth track on Radiohead's Kid A album. It contains a sample from "mild und leise", an electronic synth experimental piece by Paul Lansky, and from "Short Piece" by Arthur Krieger. Both tracks are from the album First Recordings - Electronic Music Winners (1976).

The song is a fan favorite at Radiohead concerts, with Thom Yorke usually dancing during the song. The crowd joins in singing once the words "Ice age coming, ice age coming" are sang.

Video

The official video simply features the band playing the song. Though there was a video, no official single was released.

Interpretation

Many interpret this song as something to do with global warming. It can be seen as a three-person conversation. One is an environmentalist who is concerned about the issue. He has lines such as "Ice age coming" and "We're not scaremongering / This is really happening" (the latter refers to the number of people who dismiss the issue of global warming, saying it is not really happening at all). The second person is a typical politician/citizen, who is not aware of the issue and therefore dismisses it entirely. He has lines such as "Here I'm allowed / Everything all the time" (referring to the Earth's resources) and "I'll laugh until my head comes off". The third person appears to be someone caught in between and is undecided whether to believe either one of the first two. He says "Let me hear both sides".

Towards the end, the line "The first of the children" is repeatedly sung, in reference to the album's title, Kid A.

Also, many official Radiohead shirts sold during the Amnesiac tour had a picture of a melting ice berg with the lyrics "This is really happening" written underneath. This gives more reason to believe the song is about global warming.

The word "idioteque" may be interpreted as "a place filled with idiots," similar to the word discothèque. Others have called the song a "blatantly stupid attempt at making a cheesy dance song" [1] since it is an experimental dance song, much like their song "Electioneering".

Trivia
