The 16th FINA World Championships (Russian: Чемпионат мира по водным видам спорта 2015) will be held in Kazan, Russia from 19 July to 4 August 2015.
Competitions will be held in five kinds of sport (swimming, open water swimming, diving and high diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo) in three main competition venues. The new FINA High Diving discipline has been presented on the XX FINA Technical Congress and has been officially included to the FINA World Aquatics Championships program starting from the 15th FINA World Championships 2013 in Barcelona, Spain.
World Aquatics Championships have never been held in the Soviet Union and Russia.
Bidding process
It was announced on July 15, 2011 on the biennial General Congress of FINA, scheduled in Shanghai — host-city of the 2011 World Aquatics Championships. Kazan defeated rival bids from Guadalajara (Mexico), Hong Kong, Guangzhou (China), and Montreal (Canada). The last two cities withdrew their bids shortly before the vote.
Host City
Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. With a population of 1,138,823 (2010), it is the sixth largest city of Russia. Kazan is one of the key political, economic, sport, cultural, religious, financial, educational, and transportation centers of Russia. Kazan is located at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka Rivers in the European part of Russia just one hour from Moscow by air. The current mayor of Kazan is Ilsur Metshin.
Today Kazan is a large scientific, economic and cultural center. In 2005 Kazan celebrated its' 1000th anniversary. As a city of unique monuments of the past, Kazan is on the list of the UNESCO world heritage cities.
The city has acquired the right to be officially called the “Third Capital” and “Sports Capital” of Russia. There are a lot of famous professional sport clubs like Football Club "Rubin", Hockey Team "Ak Bars", Basketball "UNICS", Volley Ball Club "Zenit", and WVC "Dynamo-Kazan", etc.

Each of the venues is conveniently accessed by major avenues and roads, as well as by public transport, making it easy for spectators to travel to and from the Championships. All existing venues are designed and constructed in accordance with the FINA competitions requirements.

Kazan Arena (swimming)
Construction period: May 2010 - December 2012
The capacity of the venue is 45,000 seats (12,000 during the World Championships 2015).
On the football pitch of the stadium two temporary 50 meters long pools are going to be constructed. Main pool for swimming competition, and a temporary training pool connected with the competition pool with additional athletes relax and massage area.
The total capacity of the competition arena (including temporary stands) will reach 12,000 people. Both temporary pools in the Main Swimming Arena will be constructed to meet FINA World Championships. General Requirements in cooperation with FINA partner — Myrtha Pools.
Aquatics Palace (diving, synchronized swimming, water polo play-off)
Construction period: September 2009 – October 2012
The capacity of the venue is 4,200 seats
The building consists of 3 pools:
- Diving - 33,3х25 m pool (allowable operating depth is 5.5 m);
- Synchronized swimming - 50х25 m (maximal operating depth is 3.0 m);
- Training pool - 50х25 m (practicing pool depth is 2.2 m).
Indoor swimming pool is situated on the picturesque bank of the Kazanka River.
Rowing Center (open water swimming)
Construction period: July 2009 - June 2011
Number of seats: 3,260 people
The venue is located on the bank of the Sredniy Kaban lake.
