This is a list of extant schools excluding universities and higher education establishments. The dates refer to the foundation or the earliest documented contemporary reference to the school. The list is a work-in-progress, and there will inevitably be many omissions, particularly for schools in non-English-speaking countries.

Second century BC

  • Shishi Middle School, China (143–141 BC) Note: The school ceased to operate for a period before its refounding in 1661. The claim to be the oldest continuous school has therefore been disputed.

Sixth century

Seventh century

Eighth century

Ninth century

Tenth century

Eleventh century

Twelfth century

Thirteenth century

Fourteenth century

Fifteenth century

Sixteenth century
