Untitled

For You is an upcoming greatest hits album by American singer Selena Gomez. The project is the first greatest hits compilation of Gomez's career and is scheduled to be released on November 24, 2014. For You serves as Gomez's final release with Hollywood Records, having signed a new recording contract with Interscope Records. It features two new songs recorded for the album, some of Gomez's previous singles and remixes of previously released material from Kiss & Tell (2009), A Year Without Rain (2010), When the Sun Goes Down (2011) and Stars Dance (2013). Gomez worked with long-time collaborators Rock Mafia on the new material for the album, with Gomez co-writing both of the two new songs. The record was preceded by the release of its lead single, "The Heart Wants What It Wants", on November 6, 2014.

Background

Gomez first began recording music in 2007,[1] signed a recording contract with Hollywood Records in 2008[2] and formed her band, Selena Gomez & the Scene, that same year. The group released three studio albums together, all of which were commercial successes and spawned multiple hit singles.[3] The band announced a hiatus in 2012, with Gomez releasing her debut solo album the following year.[4] The album featured "Come & Get It", which went on to become Gomez's biggest hit to date in multiple territories.[5] Despite the album's first two singles becoming commercial successful, the album did not receive a third single and the album was not further promoted. Following this, Gomez hired new management and later signed a new recording contract with Interscope Records.[6][7]

Development

Rumors of Gomez releasing a greatest hits album began circulating in July 2014.[8] It was later reported that the album was being released to free Gomez of her contract with Hollywood Records.[9] The album was confirmed on October 17, when it appeared on Universal Music Group's official website as an upcoming release.[10] The site revealed the album's release date, and confirmed two new songs would appear on the compilation album. Despite this, neither Gomez or Hollywood Records publicly acknowledged the record. The track listing for the album was revealed on October 31, when Amazon in France temporarily posted the album on their site. For You was officially confirmed by Gomez on November 6, when the album became available for pre-order through digital retailers. Gomez revealed that the album's lead single was initially meant to be released three times in the past, though was pushed back for various different reasons each time.[11]

For You features material from both Gomez's solo career and her releases with her band, Selena Gomez & the Scene. The album features all of Gomez's previous singles, excluding "Hit the Lights".[12] "Tell Me Something I Don't Know" was Gomez's first song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, and a remix of the track appeared on her band's debut studio album, Kiss & Tell (2009).[13] "Falling Down" was Gomez's first official single with The Scene.[14][15] "Round & Round", taken from A Year Without Rain (2010), is also present on the album.[16] "Who Says" and "Love You Like a Love Song" are both taken from When the Sun Goes Down (2011), with the latter being her band's biggest hit to date.[17] "Come & Get It" and "Slow Down" were both released as single's from Gomez's first solo album, Stars Dance (2013).[18][19] The songs "Naturally" and "A Year Without Rain" are remixed by Dave Audé, while the Boy Lightning remix of "Forget Forever" is featured. The first two remixes were originally featured on The Club Remixes (2011), along with three other remixes.[20] "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" is a cover of the Selena song, with Selena's vocals still present on the song; it was originally included on the remix album Enamorada de Ti (2012).

New material

"And it's also a step for me knowing like, 'Ok, this is what I'm about to say, and I need to say it when I'm ready' [...] And I think after this year, it's the perfect way to end the year, it's the perfect way to end a chapter in a way. It's like, this is what I'll say about every single person that has judged me for every decision that I've made, for every person, [and] heart that is being judge for something they've done, and now I just want to release it."

— Gomez, speaking to Ryan Seacrest about "The Heart Wants What It Wants" and its music video[21]

It was confirmed in October 2014 that two new songs had been recorded for the project, which at the time had not been announced by Gomez or Hollywood Records. "The Heart Wants What It Wants" was recorded by Gomez earlier in the year, with Gomez teasing fans with stills from the song's music video.[22] Ryan Seacrest later teased fans about the song's video, stating "The video will get people talking about whether or not it's about she and Justin, that's for sure […] I watched it, and I looked at her, and I listened to the lyrics, and I'm like, 'Okay, this is gonna have people talking and wondering!'"[23][24] The track was produced by Rock Mafia, and was co-written by Gomez along with Antonina Armato, Tim James, and David Jost. The mid-tempo song lyrically speaks of Gomez's turbulent relationship with Canadian singer Justin Bieber.[25] The song and its music video have been described as "emotional" and "vulnerable" by media outlets.[26][27]

"Do It", the album's second new track, was written by Gomez, Armato, James and Jost; it was also produced by Rock Mafia.[12] Rock Mafia initially remixed "My Dilemma" in 2012, when it was announced as the fourth single taken from Selena Gomez & the Scene's album When the Sun Goes Down (2011). The remix featured guest vocals from Flo Rida, though it was ultimately not released for unknown reasons. The remix appears on the album, though the portion featuring Flo Rida has been removed from the song.[12] "Más" is the Spanish version of "More", a song featured on Selena Gomez & the Scene's debut album, Kiss & Tell (2009).

Promotion

According to Mediabase, “The Heart Wants What It Wants” pulled in an listening audience of 10.061 million on its first day on radio. It was confirmed by Gomez during an interview with Ryan Seacrest on 102.7 KISS FM during the world premiere of "The Heart Wants What It Wants" on November 6, 2014 that she will perform the single "The Heart Wants What It Wants" live for the first time at the 2014 American Music Awards on November 23, 2014.

Singles

Gomez released "The Heart Wants What It Wants" as the lead single from For You. The music video for the song was uploaded to YouTube with little promotion.
