Welcome to my talk page. Click here to leave me a message.

If you have come here about a page I deleted, you will probably find the explanation here; if that does not answer your question, click the link just above to leave me a message. Please mention the name of the page, and sign your post with four "tilde" characters ~~~~ so that I know who you are.

If I have left a message on your talk page, please reply there; I am watching it.

If you leave a message here I will usually reply here, but if my reply contains advice I hope you will find useful, I may place it on your talk page. (Talk page stalkers: you are welcome; if you see no reply here, there is probably one on the other talk page; I have decided to stop making a note here when I reply there).

You may E-mail me via the "E-mail this user" link under "Toolbox" in the left-hand sidebar, but you will get a faster response here; I suggest you do not use e-mail unless you need privacy. I will normally reply on your talk page, not by e-mail.

why you delete my page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mohammad junaid jan (talkcontribs) 13:03, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Mohammad junaid jan: I told you on your talk page here - Wikipedia is not a social-networking site for people to write about themselves. JohnCD (talk) 14:07, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

James Gowan

Why have you deleted the Wikipedia page about James Gowan? I have an essay to write on him and no idea where to start researching him now, please put it back up. No matter how vague, I need this! I could even give you information to add. Please and thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.12.224.239 (talkcontribs) 17:30, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid the deleted article would be no help to you - all it said was "British architect (more to come)", but no more came. You can find some references to him in James Stirling (architect). A Google search on "James Gowan architect" finds quite a few references, and should be a starting point for you. It certainly looks as though Wikipedia ought to have an article on him, but that won't happen till someone is interested enough to do it - why not consider having a go once you've done your essay? Ask me if you need advice. JohnCD (talk) 17:56, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Also, see List of projects by James Stirling#Projects designed under the name of "James Stirling and James Gowan". JohnCD (talk) 18:05, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dale and Gale the Emu

Hi, you deleted two pages concerning public statues in my neighbourhood. They are not a hoax and bring joy to much of the community and I see no reason for them not to be on Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.172.198.216 (talk) 06:39, 28 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As a global encyclopedia, Wikipedia is quite choosy about subjects for articles. The test for inclusion is called Wikipedia:Notability and looks for references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." See also WP:Notability (summary). Those articles were deleted after a deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dale the emu decided that there was not enough coverage to show notability in WIkipedia's sense. Sorry. Hi JohnCD,

My name is Matt, I work for Alarm.com, Inc, and I wanted to ask you to provide more direction around and input on the changes you felt necessary to our entry. We drafted the entry to provide factual information, referenced where necessary, about our company's history and technology. It was largely untouched for more than a year. Rather than just deleting so much of it, I'd like to work with you to understand how we can work together to provide a complete picture of our company without eliminating key points and relevant information. Thank you and I look forward to your feedback. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.28.77.151 (talk) 01:38, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't recall having had any involvement with this article, but I have now looked at its history. What I see is a basic article being built up by a number of single-purpose accounts into something which includes marketing-speak like "a significant player... a secure and cost-effective option... provides complete peace of mind... " but more significantly is a long catalogue of all the products and services the company offers and their features and virtues. That is an advertisement, the story the company wants to tell the world about itself and its products, suitable for your website but not for an enyclopedia article, and I am surprised it lasted so long before someone noticed and reverted it.
The thing to make clear is that Wikipedia is a project to build a neutral encyclopedia, not a place for companies to tell the world about themselves. There are plenty of sites like Facebook for that, but Wikipedia is different.
When writing about your company here, you have a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and should read that guideline and the Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. Note in particular that when editing Wikipedia on any subject where you have a COI you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use (and in some jurisdictions by laws against covert advertising) to declare your interest. You are also very strongly advised not to edit such subjects directly, but to make suggestions on the article talk page for uninvolved users to consider. If there are factual inaccuracies in the article, please point them out. You may also suggest additions which would be of interest to the general encyclopedia reader (rather than the potential customer), but Wikipedia is not here to help promote your company. If discussion on the talk page does not reach a WP:Consensus, there are WP:Dispute resolution processes. JohnCD (talk) 13:16, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We definitely understand the purpose and intent of Wikipedia, and we want to have information about Alarm.com to be factual and informative. Editing an entry in a way that makes it more reflective of this purpose is very different than reverting to a description of our company that's outdated, inaccurate and misleading. I would request that you actually edit the input rather than just revert to something that's misleading. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.105.120.70 (talk) 15:09, 4 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please explain on the article talk page where it is outdated, inaccurate and misleading. JohnCD (talk) 22:48, 4 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mendip United

Hi,

Can you please explain why you have blocked Mendip United Wiki page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.197.121.197 (talk) 18:06, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The block notice explains: Wikipedia accounts are for individuals only, so there can't be a "User:Mendip United F.C." account. Also, user pages are for the individuals who are here to help build the encyclopedia to say something about themselves and their Wikipedia activities, not for people or clubs to "tell the world" about themselves. That's what social-networking sites like Facebook are for. I'll add some more advice on the account talk page soon. JohnCD (talk) 18:22, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mendip United, again

Many thanks for going into more detail about why you blocked our page.... However, many other clubs and teams seem to have pages which tell viewers about themselves.

I have just looked and Liverpool FC have a page which explains about their history, their players and various other details.

How is this different? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.200.88.59 (talk) 19:54, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is no user page User:Liverpool F.C., the club do not have a Wikipedia user account and would not be allowed to have one. There is an encyclopedia article Liverpool F.C. about the club; that is quite different. It is not the club's page, it is Wikipedia's page about the club. Liverpool F.C. did not write it, and do not maintain it: there are WP:Conflict of interest rules that say they should not edit it.
What you wrote was a sort of club home-page, the club talking to its supporters, using the first person ("we" and "our"). That's fine, but the place for it is your own web-site or a social-networking site like Facebook. Wikipedia is not a web-host for that sort of thing.
If you want to consider writing an encyclopedia article about the club, that may be possible, but it would be quite different, and doing it would be more difficult than you think. I will provide more advice on User talk:Mendip Utd FC, but not until tomorrow. Meanwhile, read WP:Your first article and WP:Notability. JohnCD (talk) 22:05, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is this page different to ours?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longwell_Green_Sports_F.C. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.200.88.59 (talk) 23:27, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it is different because (a) as with Liverpool, it is not a user page User:Longwell Green Sports F.C. but an encyclopedia article, and (b) what it says is verifiable because it gives a lot of references. If you want to write an article about Mendip United, see the advice I have written on User talk:Mendip Utd FC. JohnCD (talk) 14:15, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Andrea Rodgers deletion

Would you please correct your deletion rationale for this article? The article subject appears to be an entirely different person from the one whose article was sent to AFD five years ago? I'd already declined the G4 after checking that out. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo) (talk) 21:41, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Thanks for pointing it out - the PROD template shrieks in red if there has been a previous AfD, and I just saw it was a writer and didn't check the birth dates. JohnCD (talk) 22:26, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Falkie The Guy From Pittsburgh

Why did you delete this page? It wasn't even up for 20 minutes before you deleted it. He is a real YouTube broadcaster with 282 videos, and many fans. I don't get it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barbtiller (talkcontribs) 10:11, 4 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Barbtiller: There are thousands of real Youtube broadcasters. The test for inclusion in Wikipedia is whether there is "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject," see WP:Notability (summary). More advice on your talk page soon. JohnCD (talk) 12:30, 4 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please Revert the Original Message of Abuja Declaration 1989

Dear John CD,

The Page you Deleted from Abuja Declaration 1989 on the 04-12-2014 was the Original Message, the massage you Reverted was the inferior massage from Nura Alkali, Please be fear in your dealing. Nura Alkali Change the Message from it original form. Do you like what is happening in Nigeria now? Can't you see the rate of poverty that was created in the Name religion? Please I beg you be realistic let Nigerians and the world be aware of this mission.

You live in a great country where you tolerate each other no matter your race, more than 15,000 people have been slaughter in their cold blood for no reason in the name of religion. Nigerians need to be aware of this information, keep this message please I beg you in the name of the of the Lord your God.

The message was not copied from www.nairaland.com, they copied it from www.wikipedia.com to www.nairaland.com for easy access to many Nigerians because it is Nigeria most visited website.

Let there be peace in Nigeria and Africa will be in Peace!(Cooklabel (talk) 10:14, 5 December 2014 (UTC))[reply]

@Cooklabel: We understand that it was not copied from www.nairaland.com, and that is why it was restored after deletion in September.
The version you put there was more or less how the article Abuja Declaration (1989) started out in 2010, but Wikipedia articles are not tied to one version, they change and develop, as you can see in the page history. Anyone can edit them, and disagreements have to be resolved by discussion on the talk page, not by edit warring. If you think the present article can be improved, please make a suggestion on the talk page, but we will not simply go back to the 2010 version. Also note that:

Thanks!

Thanks for your help with the italics conundrum! It seems that the problem was that I was including the apostrophes inside the double brackets, as I was trying to type in a link for an article name that is in italics. It's good to have administrators! Cap'n Tightpants (talk) 21:06, 5 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My pleasure. One tip: when adding apostrophes, it's very easy to miss one or add one too many, which wrecks the whole layout - essential to use "Show preview" to check it looks right. It doesn't take an admin to answer helpme's, I just happened by. When you have more experience, you can check CAT:HELP yourself and see if there are questions you can answer. Cheers, JohnCD (talk) 22:38, 5 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My deleted page Hearts of the Dulcimer

Hi John,

We communicated earlier this year about a page I created for the documentary film Hearts of the Dulcimer. My understanding was that the page was rejected because there were no outside reviews of the film other than newspaper articles. Since we've last communicated, there have been two reviews, one by a prominent trade magazine called Dulcimer Players News, and the other by a publication called Video Librarian.

The Dulcimer Player News article appeared in their print-based magazine, so there is no link to the article. Here is their website: http://www.dpnews.com. The article was featured in their Summer issue.

Video Librarian's review is online and appears here: http://www.videolibrarian.com/othervideo.html#Anchor-36624

Would you please reinstate my Wikipedia article and consider it to be released on Wikipedia?

Thanks, pdelich (talk) 21:33, 5 December 2014 (UTC)pdelich[reply]

Me

I am dmitri senda, otherwise known as george seynda. My on line persona is either falkie or the guy from pittsburgh. While i did not create the page mentioning me, it was done with my blessing. My videos are being re-posted on at least 5 websites, george noory and art bell watch them on a regular basis. Was i not famous enough for you, while others who only have a claim tomfame through an inheritance( paris hilton) or noteiriety ( snookie, kim kardassian ) and have little or no talent other than their bust ir butt size.

My videos are also, posted and discussed on bellgab and the pittsburgh post gazette re posts them as well on,their news feed and has done so for 3,years.

I fail to understand what you consider substantive content given that there was a lot of content in the entry.

Me again

Note that * i * did not create the page one of my fans did.

96 subscribers, 30000 you tube views. Im sick in bed and people are asking me for new videos. I would not know how to create a wikipedia page by mysellf.

George ( my middle name ) senda — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.210.50.156 (talk) 04:41, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Me, third time

One more thing. When you answer someone why can't you do it in colloquial english ? Your answers read like an encyclopedia entry wriiten by a very liteal computer.

If you google the guy from pittsburgh, i'm all over the place. I've read your reasons and i'd need the da vinci code to try to figure out what you said in normal everyday speak or even in pittsburghese.

George senda

Din't see any tildes on my ipad.

Seems to me Wikipedia has a built in bias against internet pages not controlled by mass media publishers. If it isn't in a news source or book or some mainstream source you consider it unworthy of publication and irrelevant.

This, from an internet site created by users of the internet is most puzzling and disturbing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.210.50.156 (talk) 04:52, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try to explain in non-bureaucratic language. Wikipedia is a quite different sort of site from social-networking sites like Facebook, or fan-sites or gossip sites. Here are three of the ways:
  • People are strongly discouraged from writing about themselves here (I know you didn't, but if you have an article you shouldn't edit it: it won't be a home-page, or blog, or your article; it'll be Wikipedia's article about you.)
  • Everything added to Wikipedia should be verifiable from a reliable, published source. That's so that a reader who wants to check what they read here can see where it comes from. That means what people know from their own experience, or what they have found out by personal interview, can't be posted here. Youtube, Facebook, blogs, fansites, anywhere without some sort of editorial control and fact-checking, don't count as reliable. You wrote "If it isn't in a news source or book or some mainstream source you consider it unworthy of publication and irrelevant". No, we consider it unreliable.
  • Wikipedia is quite choosy about subjects. The "notability" test is whether people unconnected with the subject have thought it important or significant enough to write about. You wrote "Everyone famous started out as not famous" - sure, but this isn't the place where they get famous. First, they get famous, then people write about them in reliable sources, then there can be an article.
I told user Barbtiller (talk) who wrote the page about you, on his talk page, that if he thought he could find suitable references, I would restore it into a draft page where he could work on it. I haven't heard from him yet. JohnCD (talk) 23:24, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Firefly (film) featuring Evie-may Fernyhough (me)

Thank you very, very (sarcasm) much for deleting my page (Firefly (film) featuring Evie-may Fernyhough). That page was not a hoax, it was a training film for trainee directors, that's why it never made the cinema, becasue there was no need, and it wasn't an 'actual' film. I would very much like my page back, and I think you should have had more evidence to delete the page, becasue you were obviously wrong. My boss instructed me to make this page for other trainee directors too, and I do not want say he will sue, because I don't want my page back by force, but I am afraid he probably will. So could I please have my film page back, becasue it is a big part in the film company I work for. Well done in messing in other peoples business, without evidence. Evie-may Fernyhough — Preceding unsigned comment added by Movie...huh? (talkcontribs) 13:15, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Movie...huh?: sorry, but you will have to explain to your boss that Wikipedia is not for this sort of thing. As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia is quite choosy about subjects for articles. What a film needs to have achieved before it can have an article is explained at WP:Notability (films), and a training film like this does not come anywhere near. Also, you should not be writing about your own film here - see Wikipedia is not about YOU. There are plenty of sites like Facebook, or Myspace, or possibly Moviepedia, where you could write about your film, but Wikipedia is different.
Having said all that, because your page was deleted by a process called "Proposed deletion", the rules say that if you ask for it back it is restored without question, but may be nominated for deletion by a different process called WP:Articles for deletion, so that more people can give their opinions. So I have done that, and it is back at FireFly (2014 film) (I added "2014" because of possible confusion with an existing article Firefly (film)). The deletion discussion is at WP:Articles for deletion/FireFly (2014 film). That discussion will last (normally) for seven days, and then an uninvolved administrator will decide what to do. You are welcome to contribute to the discussion, but first you should read WP:Notability (films) and WP:DISCUSSAFD.
Please don't use the word "sue" here unless you really mean it, because anyone who makes legal threats is blocked.
I am sorry you have had a frustrating introduction to Wikipedia. The links in the Welcome message on your talk page will tell you more about it, and there is a groups of users interested in film at WP:WikiProject Film. JohnCD (talk) 21:35, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
