The WikiCup

Congratulations on your victory in the WikiCup. I could see way back in September that you would be likely to win if you continued nominating your excellent images at Featured Pictures at the same rate. After that realisation, I eased back on writing new articles for DYK, which had slowed down dramatically in any event, although I still managed 65 in the two month final round. I could have tried to speed up the FAC of Barn owl and the two GANs currently under review that seem to have stalled, but there was little point with you so far in the lead. The other finalists may also have abandoned hope at an early stage.

I had thought I ought to retire from the Cup if I were victorious again, so I am quite pleased that you have won, because I enjoy taking part and would feel disappointed at having to give it a miss. :-) Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:16, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cwmhiraeth- Many thanks for your most gracious note. The only reason I pushed so hard to stay ahead is because I never quite knew what you had up your sleeve. You are a juggernaut (the unstoppable part) in the WikiCup and I owe my good fortune in part to the small pool of FP reviewers who did not burn-out but perhaps learned a few new things about banknotes. Cuban banknotes and WP:MILHIST

For practical purposes, I'm thinking the gallery should just contain the final proofs of the sides with the Cuban heroes. That sound good? I don't think we could CSS crop in a gallery. Adam Cuerden ^(talk) 11:27, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

List of people on United States banknotes

Sorry I didn't respond earlier, but I haven't had as much time for editing as I've wanted lately and this slipped my mind. Your idea sounds good, but I am concerned about using an experimental photograph style in a list that is going on the main page. My suggestion is to replace the portraits and see how the new ones work. If they work fine, great; if not, they can be removed without exposure to reader criticism. I like the new system, and it helps that we are linking to other featured content. It looks good to me, although we'll have to look out for any complaints. Giants2008- Fantastic, glad to hear. I'll finish up the rest (there will be 5 images for which I don't have notes, but can work on it). I'll make a footnote for the images column in the table very briefly explaining the crop to full image link. That's one of those ones where it's a little hard to tell - I mean, the original painting, definitely would be, but these are primarily being used as extracted examples of details on US banknotes. So could go either way. Adam Cuerden ^(talk) 01:11, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's certainly better than cropping an image outside of CSS. That said, I do want to avoid getting people in the habit of, for example, cropping out half of a Mathew Brady image to get a face and shoulder pic - as that's bad practice in 99% of cases anyway, so I worry about providing too much freedom to people not educated on appropriate image use - over the years, I've heard way too many really flat-out stupid suggestions for using images, like cropping a Victorian montage print into individual images. WikiCup 2014: The results

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

Hello Godot13. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

- (ec)Crisco- There is a 1944-45 Pemerintah Dai Nippon 100 and 1,000 roepiah (don't have either) and a Dai Nippon Teikoku Seihu (1944): one-half, one, five, ten, and 100 (I have images of all except the one-half). I was actually doing some reading on this today and it seems that Japanese gulden was used significantly for a year or so post-occupation because there was so much readily available. Crisco-Article is en route already... Series date on the notes is 3 March 1943. Although engraved and printed by American Bank Note at the behest of NICA, final authorization was by Royal Dutch decree. Ref #13 is based on Cribb's comment on the ORI notes. But it was the same machinery (unless it was downgraded) the Japanese notes were printed on, beginning in 1943, so I generalized the reference.     - I think that, under a strict interpretation of WP:RS, that may have difficulty floating. Not too sure if the NICA one should be here, or in its own article. I mean, it was issued by a different government, and there are probably enough sources to support an article. 1928 series notes

Scheduling the 1928 series, but I noticed that the Series of 1928 (United States Currency) article also includes a 20, 50, and 100, 500, 1000, etc. note. So... what happened here? Cool... There were a few types of small size 1928 notes: Legal Tender, Silver, Federal Reserve, and Gold. Only Legal Tender and Silver had a $1 and a $2. With the FRN denoms under $500 in the article I had planned to nominate them as a set but for some reason did not. Do you think it would be okay to nominate (now) the $5-$100 (along with the already featured $500-$10,000, not for promotion) to have the complete FRN 1928 denomination set? - Crisco- (Ouch is right...) it doesn't appear to be a prohibitively scarce note and between the blueish staining on the lower front/upper reverse margin and the quasi-frayed (?) upper edge I would hope for a better example (i.e., something that feels visually crisper). WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

It has almost no info about the equipment but probably every mention of it in the media. Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. - What I find interesting is the biggest proponent for cutting the value to 20 points used my margin of victory in the final round as a central central argument, yet the very same person left me a note (see very top of this page) saying (as I read it) that they stopped making a competitive effort early in the final round... Crisco- I value your advice and you have never misled me, but there is something fundamentally wrong in the way this was and still is being handled. The three "judges" were never elected by any community process, yet they have empowered themselves to re-interpret a difficult yet clear consensus, reached over time, between people who initially did not see eye to eye. I have left comments (civil, with an eventual edit summary reflecting frustration) of which none have yet to be directly addressed. I believe only after there were rumblings of the possible need for outside intervention was the completely arbitrary rule regarding one FP per article undone. The 20 point value is still outstanding.   - Adam if you want something about FP, I'll contribute but I have to decline the request to write something (neutral) about the Wikicup. A critical/psychological commentary perhaps, but that is not the task at hand. I saw the no confidence motion you started. At first I didn't want to vote because I was convinced that the scoring fiasco was only a symptom of a bigger problem and that the vote of no confidence should actually be directed toward the "judges". Upon reflection, it is the WikiCup as a competition that has lost my confidence. Of the 110 registered contestants, only one (ThaddeusB), along with Nergaal, Crisco, and you spoke up about the "judges" rejecting consensus and substituting their own rules. That is not the sign of a friendly competition, but rather one where competitors willingly turn a blind eye when it suits them. Rare issued notes and proofs of US currency

Are there any websites or links that you could suggest to view high resolution rare bep proofs, proposed designs and of issued and unissued US paper currency such as the currency that you have uploaded here from the Smithsonian collection and what is not listed? Hpman2- The Kidder National Gold Bank (Charter #1699) never actually issued any notes. They had 50 sheets of 50-100 and 75 sheets of 500-1000 printed and shipped from the Comptroller's office to the bank. However, the sheets sat in the bank's vault. Comptroller records indicate that all the sheets were returned from the bank to the Treasury. There has been rumor, based on a supposed serial number irregularity, that a single $50 or $100 could exist. All the BEP certified proofs are in the Smithsonian and we (I am a volunteer research associate) are in the middle of a digitization project which will bring all of the proof sheets online (in roughly 600dpi resolution). Good for you that despite the potential for some to see COI (probably wherever they look) you took the high road from the start. The situation with the WikiCup is very sad. It is too bad that the judges didn't/don't have the insight to recognize their fairly monumental error, or the willingness to reverse their decisions. More puzzling is the black and white mentality of the comments on AN. However, I wonder if the insinuation of abolishing the Cup is a warning to the judges to make changes. Sca - Agreed, the Bank of Danzig notes are beautiful, very well engraved, with vibrant rich colors (that do not go overboard). The quality difference between the Mark and Gulden notes is night and day. Sca- One of the same denomination and series, in choice uncirculated, sold last September for $2,232.50. Last April, a 1,000 Gulden note (just shy of Gem Uncirculated) sold for $9,400. This was a free-for-all. That may also be why some of the invited guests chose to pass... It also defeats the purpose of nominating something for review/support if the nominating group is so large commentary doesn't really matter. I hear what you say. As I said it will probably will not happen any more, but those who were invited they were invited - to work too. But it was great fun, Herald had the idea and I rather don't want to make those people sad that signed up. I almost never mind sharing my noms ... because .. well it is difficult to explain. It makes people engaged, involved. They start looking for pictures themselfs, they get engaged, interested. It is a great thing to watch them develop and understand things. Wow! A great deal of it!! Well, I have signed up for wikicup after reading Generally, the picture should have been created by you (either photographed, drawn, or created in some other way) or been given significant restoration work by you or been released under a free license because of your efforts. Merely uploading a file you have found elsewhere does not constitute "significantly working on" the image which I certainly fail. Hi Godot. I'm going to order two photocopies of some material from the ANA library, but the minimum order is $5 at 25¢ for each page. Since I only need two pages, I'll have eighteen photocopies unused. Is there anything you'd like scanned? They have all sorts of information, including thousands of books, periodicals and copies of The Numismatist going back to 1888. There is plenty of information regarding paper money in their collection. Thank you for the offer, Godot! I'm not sure if their library would have it, but it's possible. I'm looking for pages 1754 and 1755 of the 1985 Numismatist anthology (it was in the September 1985 issue, but I don't know which page the information is on in the individual issue, if that makes sense). The article contains information regarding Jean Castaing and his machine for imprinting edge lettering on a coin blank. I have pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10 of that article courtesy of Wehwalt, but he doesn't have pages 7 and 8 (1754 and 1755 in the anthology). Godot, I have more proof that the Federal Reserve Bonds Series 1934 are real. here is a website of a first-hand account from a German lawyer who has fallen into possession of one of the putative bonds.
