Dear David Biddulph,

I'm writing about Operosa

Unfortunately our page has been declined again, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Operosa
The confusing thing is that is a user who no longer exists.
Would you please take a look? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Aerospeed

I really don't know what to do next.

Thanks in advance.

Regarding deletion of Beyond the Page Theatre Company of West Potomac High School and the hangon tag

There's no need to make comments that start with "I don't know how many more times you need to be told." I'm still trying to figure out how to use wikipedia and these types of comments aren't helpful. If you could provide me with specific information on how to improve my page, that would be greatly appreciated. --Emma.norville (talk) 16:16, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Emma.norville — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emma.norville (talkcontribs) 16:12, 15 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We understand that you're new to Wikipedia, but in that situation you need to read and understand the advice that you are given on your user talk page and in the edit summaries on any pages that you are editing. Don't just ignore the advice. Similarly, if you don't understand the meaning of the tags on a page, you shouldn't be removing them. On Christine Flowers it was blatantly obvious that the {{orphan}} and {{no footnotes}} tags were valid, and now that I've looked a bit further I see no reason to doubt the validity of the {{COI}} and {{autobiography}} tags. If you want to remove such tags, you'll need to provide a clear explanation for why you wish to do so. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:29, 15 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The edits on the Christine Flowers page were an accident. I didn't mean to edit that page. The hangon tag was a result of me googling how to avoid having my page deleted before I'm finished with it. I'm a student in high school, so my edits will be spaced out. I apologize for not being able to fix everything immediately. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emma.norville (talkcontribs) 16:52, 15 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No big deal but

For instance in Sweden is "nm" used along with "distansminut". "Nm" (and "NM") is an error though, and means Newton-meter (unit for torque). A capital "N" always stands for "Newton" (unit for force) within physics. This may be a "cultural crash" but shouldn't we explain things globally. I let You decide, but I don't agree. Cheers Boeing720 (talk) 03:03, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

N m (with a space) means Newton-metre. NM doesn't. Nautical_mile#Unit_symbol explains it. --David Biddulph (talk) 03:14, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion discussion of article to which you contributed

I have nominated the article Luiz Palhares for deletion because this martial arts teacher lacks notability. You have edited this article in the past and so I thought you might be interested. You may discuss this nomination here: View AfD(Californiatitan (talk) 21:26, 19 January 2015 (UTC))[reply]

Shall I move it to userspace? I intended to merge two articles into one. The draft is opposed by one sole user. For more details, see Talk:2 May 2014 Odessa clashes. --George Ho (talk) 10:02, 13 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Whether it is in userspace or in Draft space, if it has been copied from another Wikipedia page the attribution needs to be provided, see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. If a merge eventually happens, then a further sorting out of the attribution would need doing at that stage, see Wikipedia:Merging. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:26, 13 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I copied text from two articles, heavily edited by sole editor, RGloucester. Is that enough? Must I add attribution in the draft page? (Oh, I read the guideline.) --George Ho (talk) 10:34, 13 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Got a problem

I was fixing up an article on a mad scientist, and ran into a problem. Her article claims thatin 1935, she rowed for the ladies' university eight in the Women's boat race against Oxford. Any idea where we could find a source for this claim? Her name was Joan Strothers (later Lady Curran). Hawkeye7 (talk) 06:10, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies for my delay in getting back to you. I have reminded myself that CUWBC wasn't founded until 1941. In the early Women's Boat Races from 1927 to 1939, Cambridge were represented by Newnham College, and I see from the article on Joan Curran that Newnham was her college. 1937 would have been the 7th race, but only the 3rd in which the crews raced side-by-side rather than being judged on style. I do have a copy of the history of NCBC covering that period and including the foundation of CUWBC, but there isn't a crew list for the 1937 crew, so I can neither confirm nor deny the report. --David Biddulph (talk) 21:15, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Her daughter claims she rowed with the 1935 crew, not the 1937, which was the first actual race. (The claim is currently commented out of the article pending verification.) The women are being allowed to race on the same course and same day as the men as of 2015, so I'm hoping some details will come out. It seems ludicrous that we have men's records back to 1829 but no records of the women's races. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:32, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your help

Hi David, thanks a lot for your advise. In fact, I did not read the full "minor changes" article. Did it now - adding references, even without changing a single word, is not a minor modification. Understood, sorry and thanks!!! Schottelanerin (talk) 10:55, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

True. There are so many pages of rules & guidance that you can't be expected to pick them all up at once. (One further small point is that new topics on talk pages go at the foot of the page rather than the top. One exception is the Teahouse questions page; for some inexplicable reason that works the opposite way round to the rest of Wikipedia.) Keep up the good work. - David Biddulph (talk) 11:13, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

MBE and the Beatles

Why did you revert my adding "Sir" to the other Beatles because of their MBE's when "Sir Paul McCartney" on here has an MBE and he is accorded "Sir". Why shouldn't the rest of the Beatles get "Sir"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by NapoleonX (talkcontribs) 17:13, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Very simple. If you read the article on Paul McCartney you will see that he has a knighthood. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:15, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, when I went back and looked at Paul McCartney's page, it mentions the MBE and the Knighthood separately. I saw an MBE behind his name and an MBE behind the other Beatles' names and thought that MBE meant Knighthood and hence "Sir." My mistake. NapoleonX (talk) 17:33, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Riffian people

Please explain your concerns and edits at talk:Riffian people. I protected the page due to the edit warring and the absence of any discussion on article talk. Vsmith (talk) 21:00, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My questions at WP:AN3 were "So what happened firstly to the idea that 3RR is a bright line and secondly to the idea that the onus was on someone wanting to remove sourced information to discuss that removal?" --David Biddulph (talk) 21:42, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I saw an edit war in progress with zero discussion occurring and protected to stop it. Following that I noted the discussion on the 3rr noticeboard and added the protection notice there. Now please discuss your concerns on the article talk. Vsmith (talk) 22:07, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So no answer to either of my questions? If there has been a change of Wikipedia policy with regard to reversion, or with regard to justifying removal of sourced content, I would like to see diffs of where the policy changes were agreed. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:15, 20 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Great Western Revert

Apolgies if my edits were not welcome but I'm currently making a future fleet table, with occasional saves to preserve work. It's nearly done now just adding the last few pictures--Enotayokel (talk) 11:45, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Key People

Key people must not be listed twice. But CEO is there for dot-com company! so should not that be used? or Should CEO be used and that name must not be in key people or what?
thanks

Probably makes sense to use | chairman and | CEO instead of | key_people ? --David Biddulph (talk) 17:36, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. CEO and Chairman are there as the fields in the templates and it should be used! aGastya  ✉ let's talk about it :)

Agreed. Don't forget that four tildes (which will include the time and date) is the preferred option for signatures. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:55, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just a general question!

Hello! I wanted to ask: are you a computer expert? in a reply of yours at WP:HD I felt you have an excellent knowledge of it: Well I want to know this because of this.
i have some ideas: so can we discuss that?
aGastya  ✉ let's talk about it :) 06:13, 29 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't dream of claiming to be an expert, but I do have some experience, of computing in general and of Wikipedia in particular. Interesting that you have been asked to express your opinion on WP:VisualEditor, as it had been rejected as a default by the English Wikipedia community a long while before your account was registered. It was so shoddy (when it was prematurely deployed) that I haven't touched it since. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:11, 29 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

With respect.

You have another "reference", used multiple times, which is simply "Resume of Satwant Singh Dhaliwal, Unpublished". If it is unpublished it is (by definition) not a reliable source and cannot be used for verification. A number of the other "references" are themselves unsourced statements, so are equally unacceptable as reliable sources. - The resume and bio are the ONLY unpublished documents and serve to fill in info gaps like dates. Notability is established through published sources. - I do not know what other references that you are referring to which you say are unsourced. - Are not books and national daily newspapers reliable sources? - Could you perhaps be more specific by naming the things you are talking about? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jefferyseow (talkcontribs) 04:31, 31 March 2015‎ (UTC)[reply]

Two examples:
Ref 15 - "This was the first time, in Malaya (as it then was) that any Sikh had won this. The other, to have won this scholarship, Chatar Singh Data, was three years young Dhaliwal's senior. By then, the two of them were graduate assistants at the University of Malaya. They had both studied on Federal bursaries and both secured their Bachelor of Science, First-class Honours degrees the year before, Dhaliwal's in Zoology. At this time Dhaliwal, married, was preparing a thesis on the genetics of Malayan rats for his Master of Science degree and is reported to have been thinking of taking a Doctorate in Philosophy at the University of London." - Where are the sources in that?
Ref 21 - "“He was always so brilliant, from ACS Teluk Anson to his days at University of Malaya in Singapore to Professor of Genetics at Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur.” - Professor Emeritus Khoo Kay Kim. “I was the beneficiary of his dedication to excellence as he worked tirelessly to put the Department of Genetics at Universiti Malaya on a solid footing.” Subang Member of Parliament Sivarasa Rasiah. “He was regarded by many of his peers as a world-class geneticist.” - Former Business Times bureau chief for Malaysia, S Jayasankaran. “Professor Dhaliwal’s discipline in genetics was complementary to mine (zoology). But we shared supervision of some of the best students, including the late Dr Ho Choy Choke and Prof Yong Hoi Sen. Satwant was always a convivial member of the small group of lecturers in those days. I have nothing but happy memories of that formative time in my career as one of a friendly team of staff, among who Prof Dhaliwal was a significant figure, charged with leading the discipline of genetics.” - Lord Gathorne Cranbrook, the 5th Earl of Cranbrook. “Satwant’s academic achievements were there for all to see. For us, he was the organizer of hockey games and a social life that was the envy of many in the University. Even the then Vice-Chancellor Prof Sir Alexander Oppenheim (just before Prof Ungku Aziz’s term as VC) understood a bit of boisterous behaviour as long as productive work got done – and that was a remarkable feature of Satwant: after a late night he was up early in his lab or giving lectures. Eccentricity is tolerated in British universities but not in many other places.” - Professor Dr. Jose Furtado"" - In there you included a few sources to show that the people exist, but no sources to say that they made the statements you quote.
