Cyclone Mala

I reverted your edit, as you deleted a lot of information I added about the storm. Could you go back and write in the changes? In addition, you need a source that the Saffir Simpson scale uses 1 minute averages. Furthermore, do you have a source saying it was a Super Cyclonic Storm? Hurricanehink 13:01, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

First, I said I reverted your edits, because you deleted information I added. All I asked was for you to write your information back in. I never said I didn't believe you. All I want is a simple source saying it was a super cyclone. Hurricanehink 11:40, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And you ignore what I said. First, you reverted my edits, though probably accidentally. What probably happened was I submitted my post shortly before you submitted your post, so no biggie there. This is why I reverted your edit. You accidentally removed a lot of information I wrote, including an update on the death toll and more damage info. In addition, the reason people keep removing your information is because you don't have information that the storm was a super cyclone. All I am asking for is a simple link, an advisory maybe, that said Mala was a super cyclone. Hurricanehink 00:05, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This link shows what I am talking about. If you look at what you did as compared to what I did, you removed the new information about the death toll and the new damage info. Finally, I too don't know why this is becoming so difficult. All I asked from in the beginning was a source that said it was a super cyclonic storm, and you still haven't done that! All information given in the article states that Mala had winds of, at the most, 135 mph. Super cyclone status is 140 mph and above. If you want, we can continue the discussion on the Mala talk page, as I too haven't seen a definitive statement on Mala's peak. Hurricanehink 02:25, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the link clearly shows that you removed some of my information. For the last time, I don't know if you are wrong or not. Could you just provide a link saying it was a super cyclone? If you don't have evidence to back it up, then this whole conversation will have been a complete waste (it's pretty close already). Hurricanehink 11:43, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Help

I would love to help, but Userboxes are the one thing I don't know about too much. In case I can help, what exactly is the problem? Hurricanehink (talk) 11:37, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I fixed it, sorta. I added a table end formatting thing, which was one problem. However, the main problem was, for some reason, the clock. For some reason, if I just removed that, the userbox table would be fine, so I removed that. Like I said above, Userboxes aren't my speciality, but, in case you can find someone else who knows what they are doing, here is the format for the clock.
{| cellspacing="0" style="width: 238px; background: {};"
Sorry I couldn't keep everything, but now you can add stuff beneath the userboxes. Enjoy! Hurricanehink (talk) 00:14, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing, I'm glad to help. Thanks for the kind words, and never hesitate to ask for help. Hurricanehink (talk) 03:15, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

California WikiProjects

As a California Wikipedian, you may be interested in the California WikiProject (and/or one of its 'daughter' Wikiprojects on Southern California, Santa Barbara County, California State Highways and California County Routes). Please take a look at the WikiProject to see if there is anything that interests you. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to contact me. If enough people express an interest, it would also be very easy to create additional daughter WikiProjects, such as a Northern California WikiProject or a California Politics WikiProject.

It has also more than seven months since the 2nd Los Angeles area Wikipedia meetup ([ 26 September]] 2005), so it is time for another one. There have also been California meetups in San Diego (18 October 2005) and a very small one in Santa Barbara (8 April 2006. It's also about time that the Bay Area gets its first Meetup if anyone is willing to organize it. BlankVerse 05:39, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Timeline

I do understand your reasoning; however, Golbez did not want it there (quote: that is given by the opening paragraph. it only matters in cases like, oh, 2006 atl, when there were storms PRIOR to the start of the season). I left the start of the season though in the main timeline article (Timeline of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season). If you still want it in the season article, tell me or Golbez.

Alberto

It needs no backing up, it's simply a not statement we should be making. It adds nothing to the analysis and will either be gone or confirmed within a day. There's no reason not to wait. This is a general thing - you never know what the storm will do, or if another will pop up before it's named. The statement has too high a volatility and too low a value to include. --Golbez 01:50, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I have no evidence another storm is about to form. However, imagine if there were. Suddenly, our statement that "if it becomes a TS, it will be named Alberto" is incorrect - it could well be named Bertha, because the other system strengthened earlier. This may just be my opinion but I see no reason to have to juggle these various issues over a minor comment. --Golbez 02:12, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop reverting changes that were agreed upon, against consensus, at the above article. 98W was never a TD by either the JTWC's or JMA's standards. Only PAGASA recognises it. NSLE (T+C) at 08:03 UTC (2006-06-11)

98W was designated by the U.S. Navy, as it always does with potential storms, numbering them from 90 to 99. The numbers get reused, so it is possible to have two 98Ws. Hence the number isn't included. NSLE (T+C) at 08:24 UTC (2006-06-11)
"But shouldn't all tropical systems receive all name by both JWTC and PAGASA" Systems are never named uless they reach storm strength. PAGASA is different, it names all systems in its AOR. NSLE (T+C) at 08:27 UTC (2006-06-11)

Correct, the US Navy gave it the designation 98W. However, these numbers are re-used over the course of a season, unlike official storm numbers (JMA 0601, 0602 etc, or JTWC 01W, 02W etc). NSLE (T+C) at 08:29 UTC (2006-06-11)

Re:Nice!

Thanks for checking the Nor'easter page out. And to answer your questions; Cyclone1 wrote Nor'easter Danielle for me; I told him he could help out. You know, I guess you can too, if you want. And the whole subtropical resemblance thingy I guess its ok there. Just because it doesn't have an eye doesn't mean it's not a subtropical storm. But if you compare it to Nicole of 2004 and the unnamed subtropical storm last year, they do look a little alike. And the whole Nor'easter in June thing isn't impossible, infact Cyclone1 has an image of one in 2003. It looks quite organized. But trust me, Danielle was definetly a nor'easter; I had to go through it for quite a long time due to its size. I hope that answers your questions. Also, thanks for saying how useful I am; it means a lot to me. íslenska hurikein #12(samtal) 11:41, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well if you want to join the Tropical Cyclone WikiProject, then all you do is go to the project page, then scroll down into you get to a list of participants. Once there, you sign your name at the bottom of the list; therefore you become an official member of the project. After that, you can place the userbox (User WPTC) that says your a member of the project. See ya later :) íslenska hurikein #12(samtal) 23:47, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: A new depression

That is very likely a part of the Monsoon Trough. In the Western Pacific, the monsoon trough is responsible for developing most of the storms, and generates many tropical disturbances that look like this. It is very unlikely that a tropical wave made it that far west. Hurricanehink (talk) 01:52, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, 94E is hardly anything right now, but it was probably from a tropical wave... maybe even the same wave that spawned Alberto. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:02, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I doubt it. This thing is about dissipated. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:10, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Storm of the month

Tropical Storm Alberto near peak intensity
Tropical Storm Alberto near peak intensity
Tropical Storm Alberto was the first tropical storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season. Forming on June 10 over the western Caribbean Sea, the system moved northwestward as a disorganized tropical depression due to dry air and wind shear. It passed to the west of Cuba, bringing heavy rainfall to Cuba and Grand Cayman. The rainfall damaged 37 homes and destroyed 3 in Havana. It strengthened over the Gulf of Mexico and became a tropical storm on June 11. The center reformed to the northeast near its deep convection, and Alberto reached a peak intensity of 70 mph (110 km/h) before weakening and hitting the Florida Panhandle on June 13. Alberto brought heavy rainfall to the southeastern United States, peaking at 7.16 inches in Raleigh, North Carolina. The rainfall in Florida was beneficial in places as it alleviated drought conditions. The storm indirectly caused two deaths: A pilot who crashed near Tampa due to poor conditions and a boy who drowned in the flooding in Raleigh, North Carolina.

I noticed your creation of the Ewiniar article, and I was wondering where you found the deaths in Palau. I tried googling it, but got nothing. Just to let you know, to state your source in the article, just put [1]. Then it will appear at the bottom if you add this (see bottom of talk page). Re: Super Slow Tropical Cyclone Seasons

Mind you, 2005 was a once in a lifetime season. It is natural for seasons to have a late start. 2004 had 15 storms, and the first didn't even form until July 31. Having 17 storms is still possible. Provided conditions are favorable in August, September, and October, we could reach that. Consider this. The average start date for the first tropical cyclone is July 4. We already had one, so we're ahead of the average already. However, the EPAC normally has an earlier season. You're right, the EPAC is below average, but things can change quickly in the tropics. For the WPAC, this year is ahead of last year's, which saw its 5th storm on July 11. The North Indian is off to a good start with three storms. Some entire seasons don't even have three storms. In all, you generally can't judge the early season for the rest of the season. 1995 and 1997 both had 5 storms before August 1, but 1995 went on to have 19, while 1997 only had 7. 2000 and 2004 both had very late starts, with both A storms forming near the first week of August. However, they both went on to have 15 storms. Once mid-August comes around, you should be able to tell whether it will be hyperactive, active, or slow, but until then, you have to keep watching. --Hurricanehink (talk) 23:44, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Typhoon Ewiniar and activity

Please see [1]. This is the official advisory we follow at Wikipedia. It is still active. Chacor 01:15, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, you are reading it wrongly. It says "MXWD 035KT" - 35 kt max winds. The extratropical low is the 24-hour forecast. The NRL works with the JTWC, however, the JMA is the United Nations-designated official warning centre for this basin. So, it is still active. Chacor 01:38, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just jumping in to help here. Chacor is right, it's still active, but barely. See the JMA page, and you'll see that the latest advisory has it as a 35 knot storm. "24HF 120000UTC 44.2N 139.4E 100NM 70% EXTRATROPICAL LOW" means that in 24 hours, (on the 12th at 0000Z) the forecast position is 44.2N, 139.4E, and there is a 70% chance that the storm's center will be within 100 nautical miles of that point (the percentage will always be 70%, and the distance depends on how far into the future the forecast is). By then, it should have transitioned to extratropical status. -- RattleMan 01:48, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Bud and Carlotta

If they're close enough together, there will be a Fujiwhara effect and the two cyclones will begin rotating around each other, then one will overtake the other. However, the cyclones seem to be far enough away from each other, so this won't happen. -- RattleMan 13:11, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A good example is Lidia and Max from last year. Oh, please avoid editing my user page, or for that matter anyone's. unless you're given permission. It's generally considered bad etiquette to do so. Chacor 05:26, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:"Major" Hurricane Bud

No it wasn't upgraded yet. But, if you look at the NRL page you'll see that they show the power of the cyclone, when you drag your mouse on the picture of the storm. If this explanation isn't clear for you , I'm sorry, but it's 4 a.m. here in Austria and I'm very tired. Good night. ;) -- WmE 01:56, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bud article

I don't see any need for it. It is a usual major hurricane, and will likely have no impact on land. --Hurricanehink (talk) 18:08, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just a heads up

I just wanted to give you a little reminder that JTWC is not official. In the Western Pacific, despite what the JTWC says, JMA is official. --Hurricanehink (talk) 18:49, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also, Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, including to some extent in the talk pages. While sometimes it's nice to add your input, it is a little annoying to see someone say for every disturbance that a tropical storm will form within the next 24-48 hours. On the contrary, you could say conditions appear favorable, or something like that. --Hurricanehink (talk) 12:39, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you're really annoying, but wishcasting and the future in general is a little annoying in article talk pages. The talk page should discuss the topic, but it should mainly be there to discuss the existing article. Imagine, for example, if I was talking on the 2008 Presidential Election talk page, and I said that John Edwards is going to win because he is leading some polls right now. Other users would probably be annoyed by that because it is too far in advance and we don't know what's going to happen until it does. The same logic applies for the EPAC... --Hurricanehink (talk) 21:26, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Betting pools are always fun, and help get rid of the wishcasting. Let me also say that you are not the only one who is wishcasting, but you seem to do it more than some of the others. Hurricanehink (talk) 01:34, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Tropical Depression Bud

Alastor Moody wrote:

Bud is now a depression, so why did you revert my edit on the timeline?!

For some reason I thought that on previous timelines, we only noted the dissipation of the system and not its downgrade to a depression. Sorry for the confusion. — Super-Magician (talk • contribs • count) ★ 19:10, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alastor Moody wrote:

And also, please stop deleting my information I put in about Bud and Carlotta; plus, Carlotta did not yet weaken, it is still a hurricane like last evening.

I am not sure what you mean here. I did not remove any of the information you put in. I updated the data for the 8 a.m. PDT advisory. When I say Carlotta weakened, I mean it weakened slightly to a minimal Cat 1 hurricane with 75 mph winds. I know it is not a tropical storm. — Super-Magician (talk • contribs • count) ★ 19:13, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pardon me, but I am not understanding the purpose of this argument/discussion. I did not and am not removing any of your information. I am only updating it.
If you would read the latest forecast/advisory on Carlotta from the NHC, you will see that Carlotta did indeed weaken. However, as I clearly stated above, I know that it is not a tropical storm at this time. — Super-Magician (talk • contribs • count) ★ 19:22, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible that there was an edit conflict. However, I checked your contributions and you have not edited the page since 18:28 UTC. Exactly what info are you referring to that you contributed? I did not purposely replace any of your contributions as you are implying. — Super-Magician (talk • contribs • count) ★ 19:30, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please take a look at this link. You will see that all I did to your information were some minor copy edits. Nothing that I did changes the meaning of what you said on the page. — Super-Magician (talk • contribs • count) ★ 19:42, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, however, my edits do not change the meaning of the sentences, do they? You are right about the timeline (I have already reverted my edit). For the others, I only made some edits to the wording. I didn't change the entire sentence. Please, if you feel that I made some incorrect edits, revert them. I appreciate your discussing them with me first, but I do not have time to argue with you over a few tiny edits. — Super-Magician (talk • contribs • count) ★ 20:04, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Harry Potter image

Hey, I noticed you reverted the anons removal of the Harry Potter pic on your user page. That was not a case of vandalism but a good edit by an anon upholding wikipedia policy on Fair Use imagery. To quote from the policy page, "Fair use images should be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are often enough not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used ... on user pages". As such you should remove the image from your userpage.--Nilfanion (talk) 20:49, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your comments to me

You are not well-placed to talk about these, my friend. I've been editing at other wikis, and here anonymously, long enough to know what I can, cannot, and should not do. While it is true that there is no warning that no one can edit my userpage, it is a general rule that we do not touch other's userpages unless there is a violation of policy. Also, yes, the comments at the Pacific page were directed at you. Let me make myself clear. We all have our own opinions. We do not need to know them, especially when you start acting as if you're the foremost authority on the topic. Chacor 08:44, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:Free willie was born on I think March 19, 1994, and User:Coolman13 was born in mid August, 1994. User:Ninjaugusta, User:Pantera Miranda, and User:Icelandic Clementine, who are all the same person, was born in late August of 1994. User:Cowcam was born August 11, 1995, which means he is the youngest user I know of. But all of these users aren't very active.
