"Worth It"
Song

"Worth It" is a song recorded by American girl group Fifth Harmony featuring American rapper Kid Ink.[1] The song impacted American rhythmic crossover radio on March 2, 2015 as the third single from the group's debut studio album, Reflection (2015). "Worth It" is an urban pop song that incorporates strong elements of Middle Eastern music (mostly Balkan) in its production, the trademark of its producer Ori Kaplan. The song received mixed reviews from critics who commented on the production and lyrics as being either "solid and catchy" or "incomplete and repetitive".

The song has become Fifth Harmony's first Top twenty hit and highest charting single in the United States on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number fourteen.[2] "Worth It" also marked the first top fifteen hit by a girl group in the US since "Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)" by The Pussycat Dolls in 2009. It has been certified Platinum by the RIAA in United States, as well as receiving a Gold certification in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It is the group's first international hit, peaking within the top ten of the charts in Czech Republic, Greece, Lebanon, Israel, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom, as well as the top twenty of the charts in countries such as Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany and Slovakia.

"Worth It" is nominated for Choice Single: Group and Choice Summer Song at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards.

Background

The song was released on iTunes on January 19, 2015 as an "instant grat" track for those who had pre-ordered the album. It was officially released as a single on radio format on March 2, 2015.[3] "Worth It" was written by Priscilla Renea, Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, Ori Kaplan and produced by the latter and Stargate, who presented the song to the group. It was originally to be recorded by rapper Kid Ink, who ended up collaborating on the song, but the lyrics and melody were changed to fit a female perspective.

Penned by Priscilla Renea, Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen and Kaplan himself, Worth It is from the perspective of a women telling a man that she's '"Worth It", applying sexual connotation. However, the single could also be a taken as a feminist anthem, as it can inspire "young girls to truly believe they're "Worth It" and can own Wall Street or any other place on which they set their sights".[4] This view of the song is highlighted in its music video.

Critical reception

"Worth It" divided music critics. Rick Florino, from Artistdirect, praised "Worth It", claiming the song has "an empowering refrain that's impossible to shake, especially when coupled with a slippery beat."[5] Rebecca Mattina, from Andpop gave the song a mixed review, noting too-close a similarity to "Talk Dirty" but also stating that the track is "filled with lots of attitude" and rhythmic bounce.[6] Music Times gave it a positive review stating 'the intense, creeping music of "Worth It" is matched with deep harmonies from 5H and personally positive lyrics". They even compared it to Fifth Harmony's previous single, "Boss".[7] FDRMX also reviewed it positively, mentioning that "the production is solid and the lyrics are catchy" and also stating that the single is Fifth Harmony’s most mature record yet.[8] Jason Lipshutz, from Billboard, wrote a negative review, saying that the song sounds "oddly incomplete." Lipshutz also highlighted the song's "repetitive phrasing."[9]

Commercial performance

On January 29, 2015, "Worth It" debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 82. Two weeks later, the song re-entered the chart at number 93 before jumping to number 78 the following week. After the release of the music video, it surged 20 spots to number 58. On the week of June 5, 2015, "Worth It" jumped from number 21 to 17. Three weeks later, the song reached a new peak at number 14.[10] It is the group's highest charting song and first Top 15 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also debuted at number 37 on the US Mainstream Top 40 chart. It has since reached a peak of 8 after 15 weeks, becoming their first Top 10 song on the chart.[11] "Worth It" also became the group's first song to debut on the Rhythmic chart. "Worth It" has achieved Platinum certification by the RIAA for selling 1,000,000 copies in the United States.[12] The song also peaked at #1 Shazam's Global Pop Chart.[13]

In July 2015, it reached gold status in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

In the United Kingdom, the song debuted at number eighty one on the UK Singles Chart before moving thirty places up to number fifty one powered by streams alone. Then upon release, "Worth It" jumped up to number three on the chart, becoming Fifth Harmony's highest-charting position in Britain.

Music video

The music video premiered at the 2015 Kids' Choice Awards on March 28, 2015 and was later uploaded to their official Vevo account.[14] Directed by Cameron Duddy, it features the ladies in business-esque attire. Taking place in an office building, they are seen as CEOs and bosses, dancing in front of a stock market ticker. The video features many feminist attributes, as it shows women working and succeeding in a male-dominated world such as Wall Street, and statements flashing in front of the stock market ticket such as "women in power", "feminism is sexy" and "glass ceiling". Kid Ink is also featured in the video with seductive women near him as he raps.[15] As of July 16, the "Worth It" music video has surpassed 100 million views, earning them their very first Vevo certified award ever. (A few hours ago, the "Worth It" music video had been taken down from YouTube, citing a violation policy of "repetitive, misleading, or inappropriate metadata" which has prevented the group from garnering further views. While the video is currently not available on the site, it has since been re-uploaded to Vevo)

Live performances

On February 17, 2015, Fifth Harmony performed "Worth It" for the first time on VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live.[16] The song was regularly performed during their headlining tour, The Reflection Tour, in support of the album. The group performed the song with Kid Ink for the first time on Jimmy Kimmel Live on June 18, 2015, and this was also their first late night appearance.
