Plot

The film opens with a scene of a low-level party cadre Senkalvarayan (Thambi Ramaiah) tying a flag to a street-lamp post when his heavily pregnant wife gets labor pain which was informed by an old lady but he completely ignored as he is very dedicated to his leader and party than family. At the same time, the party leader (Nassar) happens to visit the locality; upon hearing his party cadre's ignorance to pregnant wife, the party leader lends his car and ordered his driver immediately to take the pregnant lady to the hospital for delivery. But she delivers a baby boy Pazhani /Siddharth Abhimanyu(Arvind Swamy) before they get to the hospital. When Pazhani is fifteen years old and secured state first rank in his 10th standard state exam and visits the party leader for his blessings with his father. While they were waiting in the party office for the leader to come in, they witness a murder of a rebel party candidate by their own revered leader due to caste related comments by the rebel on the him. When the leader asks Senkalvarayan to the blame by saying he killed the man due to rage on the rebel's comments over the leader but Pazhani volunteers to take the blame and willing to go to Jail citing leniency of Juvenile laws in exchange for an MLA seat for his father Senkalvarayan. Now the story fast-forwarded 15 years.

After 15 years, a trainee IPS officer Mithran (Jayam Ravi) and his friends indirectly assists the state police in catching a gang kidnapping 4 young girls by kidnapping the kidnapper's family members. They sneak back into the trainee's hostel of National Police Academy by hacking security camera. One day Mithran received a cryptic text message on his phone from an anonymous number when him and his friends were at a briefing on generic medicinal drugs. In the evening, they go out to meet the person who sent the message that turned out to be Mahima (Nayantara) who loves Mithran. Then comes the flashback where Mahima narrates how she fell in love with Mithran at their first meeting itself. It was a train journey of both Mithran and Mahima from Chennai to Mussoorie for their IPS training. Mahima tries to impress mithran and fails miserably as he is not interested in love. So she discontinues her IPS training and joins the forensic department. After 6 months when they meet, they happened to witness a gang that kills a man named Raman who is a social activist with the pretense of Snatch theft but the incident has a hidden motive. Mithran and his friend catch the gang and their leaders and hand over them to the state police. All went to shock, 4 days after the incident, when the leader of the gang comes to the IPS headquarters with the home minister of the state. This political and organized crime came as a shock to Mithran's friends. When they approach Mithran about this and previsions incidents when these officers helped police to capture criminals but they were all cut loose in days and some were in hours because of political influence, he took them to his house and shows his research on connecting all small unrelated incidents into the global view of a hidden network of politicians, industrialists, and criminals who bend the law for their own financial benefits. He singles out three prominent business oligarchs in the state (a pharmaceutical mogul, a mineral magnet, and a Crime Boss). Then when he tries following one he comes to know that all three are a group and these three big bosses are controlled by the Siddharth, a scientist.

Siddarth uses the medical field for the wrong reasons and his own profit. At that time a Swizz pharmaceutical company owner Angelina, an activist as well, tries to make generic medicines available for India which will be so inexpensive that even poor people can buy for life-threatening diseases. Siddharth kills her before she signs the agreement document with the government and Mithran is also shot at the same time. While he was recovering, from the gunshot wound, in the hospital an electronic bug (GPS + audio transmitter) was implanted during surgery in which bullet fragments were retrieved. Through the bug, Siddharth listens all of Mithran's plans and continuously monitors his whereabouts and whatever he talks via audio transmission. Then comes an evidence against Siddharth in the form of Ms. Manimekalai (Abhinaya). She was a scientist at Siddharth's research Lab, where a sea weed that can cure diabetes is found abundantly in the oceans. Siddharth tries to sell the technology and rights to extract medicine from the sea weed to multi-national pharmaceutical companies that was opposed by Ms. Manimekalai. So Siddharth had her raped and killed by his goons. But before being killed she recorded a video and put it on a SD card so someone can find it. But before Mithran can find the SD card, Siddharth finds it due to the implanted bug and kills Jana (one of Mithran's friends) who was assigned to bring it to Mithran. Finally Mithran finds out that there is a bug inside him and takes it out. He then uses it to his advantage to expose all of Siddharth's wrong doings. Finally Siddharth is arrested. Mithran tells him that the medicine was patented in Manimekalai's name even though Siddarth was the inventor and will be made as generic medicine instead of a patent-protected one. Then makes a deal with him saying that he would save Siddharth's life for information and evidence on all of his criminal associates and their activities and give him a bullet proof vest to fake his death during his transport to court. But Siddharth doesn't wear it but before leaving for court, he left all evidence in a SD card and kept it in a pocket on the vest. But Jayam Ravi saves him from being shot only to be later shot by Shilpa (Mugdha Godse) who was Siddharth's girlfriend for killing her father. Before dying Siddharth tells Mithran that he's given all information that Mithran wanted in the SD card.

Production

In February 2013, Mohan Raja stated that he would direct his brother Jayam Ravi again in a film to be produced by AGS Entertainment and that he had been working on the script for the past six months. Unlike his earlier ventures which are mainly remakes, he was said to have developed an original story concept.[2] Raja said, "This film is close to my heart; it's an experimental script and I've put my heart and soul in penning it".[3] In July 2013, Nayantara signed on to be part of the project [4] and her role was reported to be that of an aspiring police officer.[5] Ganesh Venkatraman was cast for a pivotal role and the actor told that the film focuses on friendship and that he, Ravi and Nayantara played friends in the film.[6] The film was started without a title and was referred to by the tentative title, Thani Oruvan, which was confirmed as the film's official title in June 2014.[7]

Filming started on December 6, 2013 [8] with a two-day schedule in Chennai at Binny Mills where a railway station set had been erected and romantic flashback portions involving Ravi and Nayantara were shot.[3] The crew then moved to Bengaluru in January 2014 where filming was held at a police training college.[9] As of February 2014, filming was underway in Mahabalipuram, Bangalore, Sri Ramanujar Engg College, Vandalur and Hyderabad.[10] In March, Ravi stated that the team had also shot in Rishikesh, Dehradun and that the third schedule was currently happening in Mussoorie.[11] In June 2014, Raja revealed that the team were still yet to film scenes featuring the lead antagonist with reports linking either Arya or Arvind Swamy to the role, the pair however refuted the reports.[12][13] It was later revealed that Arvind Swamy would be playing the antagonist.[14] In March 2015, it was reported that the film would also feature Bollywood actress Mugdha Godse, who had been paired opposite Arvind Swamy and would make her Tamil debut.[15]

Music

Devi Sri Prasad was first reported to be the music composer of Thani Oruvan,[16] with Raja telling that he had been in talks.[11] Hiphop Tamizha was finalized as the music director in March 2015.[1] The soundtrack was launched at Suryan FM on July 23, 2015.[17]
