After his stay of about seven years in Patna, he moved to Delhi to enroll into National School of Drama which he graduated from in 2004.[5][6]

However it was eight years later in 2012 he was recognised and widely praised for acting in the Gangs of Wasseypur film series. His audition for the role of Sultan Queresi, a butcher, in Gangs of Wasseypur movie went on for about 8 hours.[7][8] In 2008, he worked for Bahubali TV series, and later in Powder on Sony TV. In his early career, he played mostly negative roles and became synonymous with gangster character.[9][10] Later he played various roles and won critical appraisal for the same.[11] His first film as a lead actor was the 2017 film Gurgaon. His 2017 film Newton was India's official entry for the Academy Award in best foreign film category.[12]
