== Concerning: Nomination for Featured Article ==

Hi. I'm still somewhat new here at WP and I noticed that you are an active editor on one of the pages I am interested in nominating for featured article.

My question; would you be available to proofread the article [[Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act]] and complete the nomination for Featured Article?

Arlene's Flowers edits

Back to back, you 1)removed citation of her lawyers' press release on ground of its being unreliable as to what a court ruling required, and 2)removed quotation of what a (later) court ruling actually said in favor of paraphrasing it.These standards seem at cross purposes!12.144.5.2 (talk) 18:37, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not at all. Neutralitytalk 19:51, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So should one "drill deep" for what a ruling actually says,or avoid doing so?12.144.5.2 (talk) 20:45, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I’m not sure what you mean by “drill deep.” But if you’re asking whether we can cite original primary documents (eg, opinions, orders) we can do that with caution, and balanced with secondary sources. Long direct quotes are poor style; we should paraphrase where possible. As for citing press releases from involved parties — those should usually not be used to support statements of fact made in the encyclopedia’s own voice. Fat Leonard

I want to thank you for all your wonderful work on "Fat Leonard..." Your editing on it was immensely valuable, but when you added the table 15 months ago, I think it added considerably to its clarity and usefulness, though it became somewhat more laborious to edit. (I added a few more cells this morning to catalogue a few miscreants whose names had not been previously revealed.) It wouldn't have occurred to me to reconstruct the article that way, nor do I possess much in the way of technical expertise. I've been fascinated by the case, mainly because it involved so many high-ranking personnel from the Naval command structure, whistleblowers were ignored (and possibly more widely discouraged than that of which the public is aware, an unfortunately commonplace condition of bureaucracies), because it persisted so long, and because it's taken so long to bring the co-conspirators to justice and who knows how many escaped scrutiny? The dollar amount of corruption may seem large to the uninformed, but I suspect the "$35 million" is a pittance compared to what some defense suppliers (aircraft manufacturers, shipbuilders, missile component supplies, etc., etc.) rip off. Another thing which has missed mention is that if high ranking officers were willing to share info about vessel movement and schedules, that it grossly compromised the nation's defense. Suppose for instance, if Leonard were able to sell tactical information to U.S. enemies, what the consequences might have been, and even more so, if he were able to control movements not just to enrich himself, but to give another nation or organizational combatant a sought after, tactical advantage? Without initiating a Google alert, I've done my best to keep the article very up to date (using frequent searches) and I know you've done the same. I think it's a public service. Lastly, I'm amazed at how few media organizations have been involved in significant coverage. Except for a bit of interest from the San Diego area press and the military publications (i.e. Navy Times, Stars and Stripes), the Washington Post (almost entirely Craig Whitlock) has probably produced 90% of the media scrutiny. The Straits Times may have given it more space than the U.S. press outside of the Post, and to a much lesser extent, Virginian, San Diegan and Hawaiian media. What do you think? Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.

Technical news

  • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
  • Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June). This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.

Miscellaneous

  • Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Wesley Craig

Administrators should take special care when dealing with new users like myself.

Beginning editors are often unfamiliar with Wikipedia policy and convention, and so their behavior may initially appear to be disruptive. Responding to these new users with excessive force can discourage them from editing in the future.

As a rule of thumb, when in doubt, do not block; instead, consult other administrators for advice.

I am an adult. You do not need to bully and threaten me to help me understand your point. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wesley Craig (talkcontribs) 02:08, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wesley Craig: I'm simply cautioning you on the next steps if you continue on your present course. If you take time to familiarize yourself with basic policy principles and act in accordance with them, I wish you happy editing. But fringe content on biographies of living persons cited to frankly terrible sources won't really fly here. Neutralitytalk 02:36, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

  • After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
  • Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.

Gibson Victory

OK. So after putting countless of hours of research in to this page someone wiped most of the information off. I am new to editing Wikipedia and I have never edited any other page than this one and probably never will. I received my MVX as a graduation gift. I was unable to find any information about my Victory guitar; years later, I researched Gibson books from the library but the only tiny bit of information I read in one of the books was that guitar snobs looked down their noses at Norlin era guitars and the Victory was a sales flop. When playing in bands people asked me what it was because they had never seen one. Now I am an old man but the internet has given me the ability to chat in guitar forums and do deep searches in to the turbulent time that Gibson made the Victory. I did my best to put as much information as I could into the Wikipeda page because I was so starved for information about this guitar for so many years. I admit my bias because I like my Victory. It rocks like nothing else I have ever played. So I ask your help In making this page more professional without removing good information. I am an amateur luthier so it matters how a guitar is made, who made it, and what material it is made of. I posted what I have learned about the Victory so that someone who inherits one from their grandfather who does not play guitar and knows nothing about the Victory will understand what they have and take care of it. It is very unlikely that more than a couple of people will ever even look at this Gibson Victory Wikipedia page unless they have a Victory and want to find out more about it. So if all you do is erase everything without trying to help source the info or improve it I won’t waste my time here.

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Cheers, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:53, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator changes

removed AsterionCrisco 1492KFKudpungLizRandykittySpartaz

Interface administrator changes

added AmorymeltzerMr. StradivariusMusikAnimalMSGJTheDJXaosflux

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.
