- Coat of arms of Fiji, Kingdom of Fiji
- Request
- Would it be possible for someone to create an SVG version of the above coat of arms of the Kingdom of Fiji from 1871-1874? And for anyone who wants to undertake this, here's an old Fijian coin with said arms on it, in order to provide a better guide to the outline of the image. Thanks. Request taken by Pbroks13 (talk) 15:57, 3 January 2019 (UTC).
@Snow Lion Fenian: Your thoughts? Pbroks13 (talk) 17:55, 6 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Pbroks13: Very nice work, and thanks for taking the time to do this. Though while we're here, would it be possible to create a colourised SVG image of this alternate version of the 1871 Fijian Arms, as documented on this page here. It would presumably use the same colours as the one above, but obviously with different shapes and size dimensions for the various objects. Also, the page describes the crown in this case as resembling that of Louis XV. Sorry about this, it's just that I don't think it would hurt to have both versions of the Arms on Wikipedia, and I thought I might as well ask while we're still on the subject of it. But if you're not feeling up for it, I will declare this resolved either way. Thanks again. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:13, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian: Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The page mentions that it "reminds of the [[|File:Crown of Louis XV, Musée du Louvre, Paris October 2015.jpg|crown of King Louis XV]]," but the french crowns display a fleur de lis. Nothing I've seen has shown any Fijian emblem with a fleur de lis; for example, that coin displays a cross. I am just unsure on how the crown part of the arms should be. Are you able to clarify that for me? Thanks. Pbroks13 (talk) 16:37, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Pbroks13: Sorry for the delay. Honestly I'm not sure, I was merely going by what the article said. Yes, it is hard to make out whether the emblem on the crown from the article is supposed to be a cross or a fleur-de-lis, and I haven't seen any Fijian heraldry bearing a fleur-de-lis either, so I know it is a bit unusual for a Fijian arms to allegedly bear a French-style crown, but then again, the two sceptres in the Arms are said to be similar to those of Charles II and Mary of Modena, neither of which have anything to do with Fiji either. Hence the crown doesn't seem to be the only thing that Cakobau copied from European royalty when creating the arms. But if we're both unsure, would you prefer not to create such a file? Sorry about this. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 20:09, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian: I don't mind making it; I've actually already made it. I just don't know which crown to use! It's up to you, just let me know. Perhaps some more digging into what "The Royal Fijian Crown" is is necessary. Pbroks13 (talk) 20:36, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Pbroks13: Well, there really doesn't seem to be any fixed version of the "Royal Fijian Crown" from the 1871-1874 time period, as proven with the differing examples of said crown displayed here and here. And according to the aforementioned article, no actual Fijian regalia ever existed physically in the 1870s, only for heraldic purposes. However, this photo of an old Fijian flag that I came across on the Fiji Museum website seems to show a crown with two red shapes that vaguely resemble fleur-de-lis. I know they only resemble them in a rather crude way (and that the crown doesn't look that much like the one on the arms in any other way either), but it does make me wonder if fleur-de-lis did indeed appear in Fijian heraldry at the time after all (even if it seems to have been completely copied from European royal symbols that don't have much to do with Fiji). So perhaps the Louis XV crown should be used after all? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 18:36, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

PNG renderer doesn't handle the coloring order correctly
Case in point: File:Metric system adoption map.svg – Antarctica (and other small uninhabited territories that belong to the class "antxx" defined in the SVG file) gets rendered in gray when SVG is previewed directly by either Inkscape or a browser, but the renderer renders them green. Can someone look into this and possibly fix the PNG renderer? cherkash (talk) 03:12, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- Update: the latest revision I uploaded seems to work – but this doesn't take away from the problem. It's just a workaround. So if you troubleshoot this issue, please take a look at one (or both) of the two previous editions that were rendering incorrectly. The changes between the revisions are trivial (they are hand-edited) – so it should be easy to see the changes to localize what's going on. cherkash (talk) 03:22, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
@Cherkash: I have had this issue in the past. I wish I knew enough to comb through the code and find out exactly what causes this, but alas, I can't. The workaround that I use is to copy-and-paste the entire image to a new document. I've tested it on the file you listed (I used the file from "02:40, 11 February 2019"). Let me know if it renders properly on your end. Pbroks13 (talk) 03:57, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- Pbroks13: it did render properly, but the edits you made defeat the purpose of these series of files – i.e. to be easily editable by hand and to have a clean internal structure of the styles applied to the elements. So this doesn't quite solve the problem with the renderer... Actually, I had already forced the renderer to do what I needed (see my update to my initial posting above) – but it's the fact that the renderer doesn't behave consistently with other editors/viewers (and hence doesn't probably follow the standards) is what I'm trying to draw attention to here. Thanks for trying to help. cherkash (talk) 04:05, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Cherkash: I see. I'll go ahead and revert my edit.
Also, just a heads up, there are a good bit of grey circles that have their opacity set to 0. Not sure if this was intentional.(I see that it is, now that I read the code) Sorry I couldn't be of more help; TilmannR seems quite knowledgeable on these kind of issues. Perhaps they could be of assistance. Pbroks13 (talk) 04:09, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Cherkash: I see. I'll go ahead and revert my edit.
This inconsistency can be replicated with the following SVG:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="300" height="300">
<style type="text/css">
.red{fill:#f00;}
.blue{fill:#08f;}
</style>
<rect width="100%" height="100%" class="blue red"/>
</svg>
Browsers render it as a blue square. The Commons SVG Checker renders it as a red square. Apparently browsers prioritize classes, which appear later in the CSS. Librsvg seems to prioritize classes, which appear later in the class attribute.
In the world map's class attributes antxx
came before landxx
. Therefore antxx
's grey fill was overwritten with landxx
's green. Replacing all occurrences of antxx landxx
with landxx antxx
seems to fix that problem. TilmannR (talk) 15:28, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- @TilmannR: Do you know which is a correct behavior per the applicable standards? My hunch is that CSS ordering should take precedence: isn't that one of the main points of having CSS? I.e. abstraction of the elements styling from the elements description. cherkash (talk) 10:43, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Cherkash: Indeed. The W3C recommendation says "The last declaration in document order wins.", which is consistent with the behavior found in browsers. The Phabricator task for this issue is phab:T215815. TilmannR (talk) 15:29, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
