Trivia

The idea of the mutant race called the Kryll being vulnerable to light and operating only in darkness was completely inspired by the movie Pitch Black Do I really need to say what's wrong here? I'd fix it myself if the page wasn't locked. 68.118.234.84 21:18, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Prologue

Where did this come from?

A lot of it is in the book that shipped with the collector's edition, so I'd assume from there. 68.118.234.84 21:21, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Box Art photo

Hey everyone, I'm new to WP, so excuse me if i mess up the formattiong of this page or something :)

Should there be a new box art image (the first photo) that shows the game's ESRB Rating(M)? I think it would just look better, and it may help parents trying to research the game. -Kenny

Achievements

See What wikipedia is not. The following section applies to the Achievements part of Gears of War: Instruction manuals - while Wikipedia has descriptions of people, places, and things, Wikipedia articles should not include instruction - advice (legal, medical, or otherwise), suggestions, or contain "how-to"s. This includes tutorials, walk-throughs, instruction manuals, video game guides, and recipes. I've since removed the Achievements section. If you need to know how to obtain the achievements, I recommend GameFAQs. -Xeon25 01:35, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe this constitutes a "how-to," really. This information is part of the game. I believe the achievements for the game should be listed somewhere in this article or at least glanced over that there are 43 achievements worth 1000pts, etc... Pheonix2og 05:19, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The section I removed detailed every achievement and how to obtain them. That is not what Wikipedia is for. I also don't think it's necessary to mention the game having achievements since every 360 game has them. If they were a special feature of Gears of War, that I can understand, but they're not. -Xeon25 21:13, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I added an achievement website, since we didn't want anything achievement related on Wikipedia. However, it is directly related to the game, and the entire Xbox 360 system as a whole, so it should be mentioned somewhere, even if its an external link. --DaKing 09:16, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Xeon is not getting the point. Though acheivements are an element to every 360 game, there are different numbers of achievements with different values. The "how-to" get achievements should be left out, but the names and values should be in there somewhere.

Vandalism

Great, vandalism. Can someone fix this please, since I'm too lazy to.

Fixed -- and someone please slap Strongbug (Wikipedia mods got him -- yay) --Jecrell 03:42, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Locust Horde

Could someone clean up and possibly add more to this? It has way too much space and not enough info. User:Sanius 23:52 July 24th 2006 (UTC)

I'm sure more will be added as more info on the game is released. Lemme see what I can dig up. --Xeon25 13:52, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The locust speak german if that helps — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.0.9.246 (talkcontribs)

You know, I really, really doubt that. -Xeon25 01:42, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

listen to the way they talk in some trailers there is deffanitly german in there

I'm new to Wikipedia and I have no idea how this works. I have the special edition which includes an exclusive booklet with quite a bit of story in it. It also came with a booklet specifying the stats of each and every unit and every weapon. If I could be cleared to edit the GoW page I could add these in, or I could give the info to someone and they could edit it. The lack of info on this page is dissapionting! Hal337Hal337 nov 8

Which trailers contain the German (supposedly)? ListedRenegade 20:53, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've played the actual game. Actually, they speak english. You can hear them shout "Grenade!" just before they toss a frag bomb at you, for example. Master Deusoma 00:52, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Multiplayer

I'm going to start work on the multiplayer section ASAP. I added the headline and actully forgot to put anything in while I was busy fixing up the article. -User:Sanius 24:04 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Screenshot source

Can we find out whether the infobox pic is a movie or in game action? --maru (talk) contribs 21:54, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's a screenshot. ··gracefool | 23:26, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Cutscenes in the game have so far mostly been genereated using the in-game engine, so the answer will almost always be "in-game". gspawn 16:37, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That is true, however, that shot specifically is not 100% game engine. It's an industry standard when releasing official press/media, is to clean it up a little, even if it is real time. Gears of War looks awesome, but realistically speaking, that screenshot is not what you see in game, it's cleaned up in a bit before being released.
Actually, I play the game on a 13 inch CRT... And it looks a whole heck of a lot better than that screen shot. That screen shot is all ... low-res-distorted-JPEG looking. I'm not going to edit the page, but I think something like one of these should be the replacement: http://digg.com/gaming_news/Uber_High_Res_Gears_Of_War_Screenshots_5120_x_2880

The blond-haired dude

Does anyone else notice that the cynical blond dude looks alot like Cid Highwind, and from the description will also act the same?

Well.. you know many games contain homages to other material. Perhaps he's one. Xeon25 15:28, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He does! Yeah, he has the goggles and all. Mark321123 12:07, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Several of the images are tagged as potential copyright infringments, while others, from the same source, have permission granted under the GPL. How does that work?

I'm writing to IGN to see about getting permission. Xeon25 12:09, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed all copyvio images, since per WP:FU they should only be used to provide critical commentary and (sparingly) for identification. Please choose a single image, at most, to re-add to the article - we don't need so many fair use, and potentially copyvio, images hanging around this article.
The removed images are:
RandyWang (raves/review me!) 11:50, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we really need any images, other than the first one that displays the game box. If anything, why not just provide external links to image galleries (or the sites that have them)? --Xeon25 15:41, 4 August 2006 (UTC) (ugh... always forgetting to sign :(. )[reply]
Absolutely agreed. I'm pretty much for using as few fair use images as possible - and this article certainly doesn't need any more than its current state. RandyWang (raves/review me!) 01:01, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There should at least be one image or gif showing the ingame content and grafics. Perhaps a shot of someone getting chainsawed, because that is the defining moment of the game according to CliffyB. It's extremely stupid not to have a picture of the game being player. hal337

Exactly. What the other people propose, so to speak, is "do your illegal activities elsewhere, just not here." It's stupid to be such copyright obsessors that you won't even illustrate the game. Scepia 03:22, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

  • 1. Removed the second "release date" that was added; changed it to elaborate on the Collector's Edition.
  • 2. Changed The Gears' names from simply bold font to a subsection on their own under the "The Gears" section header.
  • 3. Gave information on any potential demo it's own subsection using information already provided by another contributer.

Anything else need cleaning up? --Xeon25 15:42, 4 August 2006 (UTC) (did it again! :/)[reply]

Good start! Unfortunately, yes, there's still a lot to be cleaned up, but it's largely to do with the style in which the article is written. If you take a look at the WikiProject CVG guidelines, you can probably pick up a few things that need to be fixed in this article's writing style (off the top of my head, the use of the second person "you" - rather than "the player" - is an important thing to change). I'll try to pick out some more things and fix them myself, but I may not have time in the near future. Thanks for your help so far! :) RandyWang (raves/review me!) 01:05, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Someone was kind enough to tag the article with "advert" and "inappropriate person", so I did my best to resolve both of those issues. If someone wants to look over it to see if there's more refining needed, I'd appreciate it. --Xeon25 15:10, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Since they were tagged for cleanup, I removed most of the external links. The official site link remains, and I added IGN and 1Up overview links for people who need their screenshot/video/etc fixes. If that's not cleaned up, I don't know what is. lol -Xeon25 16:34, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Current Wiki

I checked it today and saw a large edit done to the wiki. Virtually all the pictures are gone, and the control scheme section was removed, along with the multiplayer section. What happend? User:Sanius 10:46 August 5th 2006 (UTC)

I'll re-add the multiplayer section but I doubt we need the control scheme section
McDonaldsGuy 21:38, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Locust Horde unit descriptions

I've removed most of this section, and replaced it with a general description of the variations that exist between Horde units. We don't need detailed entries on each and every kind of Horde: we need explanations of their history, reason for attacking, comparisons to other alien species (if necessary) and so on. I know little about this game, but the content I removed was largely gamecruft.

I'll do the same kind of thing to the character descriptions above, when I have the time to work out what needs to go. RandyWang (chat me up/fix me up) 02:47, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cover image

Who decided to have the limited edition box as the main image on the page? The main image needs to be the regular cover image. Mr.bonus 19:36, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, it should be just like the Halo 2 page with the main cover in the info box and the collectors/limited eddition somewhere else on the page. - Matt Husdon

Release Date?

In the article, it states that the release date is November 7th for United States, witch agrees with xbox.com, but emergence day is on the 12 as according to http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/showpost.php?p=7822444&postcount=1, the game ships on the 7th but doesn’t release to the public on the 12. So shouldn't the "release date" be the 12th? SwK 01:24, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

. I have no idea what I'm doing re wikipedia edits. So could someone please identify that the release date is the North American release date. The Australian release date is November 24. Pity the colonies. Cheers. --60.230.139.67 01:12, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The official Gears of War release dates are November 7, 2006 for the United States, November 17, 2006 for Europe. No Japanese release date given. Xeon25 19:17, 3 October 2006 (UTC) (I stand corrected. The general concensus is Nov 7 as the US release date)[reply]
Someone changed the release date in the table on the right side of the page, and gave alot of information but no citation. can we please get some citations? Cablebfg 22:10, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The New Zealand release date of November 23 was broken when a retailer sold a copy before this date. The New Zealand release date then became November 22.

Vandalism

Is it just me or are there more and more vandalism attempts made on this article? Personally, I say unregistered accounts be blocked from editing it in the future. :/ -Xeon25 20:08, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. The vandalism on this page is insane. Now it is compared to World of WarCraft? This page, and probably almost any page relating to Xbox 360, Wii, or PlayStation 3 games need to be locked down to prevent fanboys of other systems/games coming in and just posting inane crap to make it look like the games are complete nonsense.UncleThursday 15:19, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PC version

I know this may be a rumor but some places on the net say that a PC version will be made for Windows Vista users and will be made available on the PC in late 2007. Shouldn't the PC or Windows Vista text be added into the infobox? Vgamer101 23:52, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is just a rumor. So far, the only officially announced version is for the Xbox 360. That doesn't mean that it won't come out for the PC down the road, but Epic is only focusing on the 360 one at present. If/when there's an official announcement, it'll be added. -Xeon25 01:20, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing Page

I am currently trying to fix the page, and get the code saved up in a document for future issues. But something is messed up, because the boxes and such aren't really working. User:BF2MCguy 2:55 PM, 22 OCT 06, (PST) I fixed it, got everything the way it should be, I have the whole form saved on Word, so if this happens again I will put this page back up (though it may be outdated, it will have some format atleast) User:BF2MCguy 3:23 PM, 22 OCT 06,(PST)

Maybe I'm missing something... but what needs/needed fixing? -Xeon25 02:21, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Someone replaced the entire page with a wall of random letters. If you look through the history of the article you can find it. BF2MCguy 6:18 PM, 25 OCT 06, (PST)

Talk Categories

I changed the Categories back to unknown-importance and unassessed, because other grades would be biased and may draw dispute. BF2MCguy 12:38 PM, 23 OCT 06, (PST)

Development Costs

Epic Games VP Mark Rein has stated that Gears of War was produced with a budget of a mere US$ 10 million[1]. He also comments on the development costs of next-gen games.

Could this be added in?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.65.132.56 (talkcontribs)

CE Case

I placed a more detailed picture of the Collectors Edition case for the game, though I forgot to add it to the subject of my edit. I thought that the image (taken from TeamXbox.com) showed more detail of the case than the other image did. BF2MCguy 1:27 PM, 25 OCT 06, (PST)

Marketplace Trailer?

http://www.xboxyde.com/stream_3272_en.html

Maybe it should be included?

It wouldn't hurt to add a link, but it's not essential to the article BF2MCguy 1:27 PM, 25 OCT 06, (PST)

story/characters

I've deleted these sections because they were written in a wholly inappropriate tone. If anyone wants to actually write a plot summary or background description without sinking into that totally in-universe tone, they're welcome. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 17:40, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

The vandalism on this article in the past few days is ridiculous. At least there are people who spend the time to fix everything. BF2MCguy 6:05 PM, 31 OCT 06, (PST)

Indeed. It's ridiculous... I've requested semi-protection for this article. -Xeon25 03:08, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Source? Scepia 05:23, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It almost certainly is, but it does need sourcing. I'll take a look now. Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 07:07, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is indeed the first and only currently-available game using the U3 engine. Although it seems to me that this is common enough knowledge to not need sourcing. ~~ Kyuzo, 13 November 2006

Trivia on Cole

I think it's worthwhile to add in the Trivia section that the former football player Cole is clearly based on Terry Tate from the Reebok "Office Linebacker" commercials, and that character is voiced by the same actor. The character's nickname is "Cole Train" and Tate's was "Pain Train". ~~ Kyuzo 13 Nov 2006

Poor

This is very poorly written, or at least the "story" portion of it is.

  • i agree. and there are terrible inaccuraccies throughout. please repair. 70.239.199.27 20:06, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • I tried rewriting the whole article a while back when the majority of it was rather scatterbrain. Hopefully the article is improving.

Weapons

There is an error, the article mentions that one must tap B repeatedly to start the chainsaw. That is not true, a player only has to hold B to start the chainsaw, and continue to hold B when approaching an enemy to proceed chainsawing.

As mentioned above me, "The chainsaw can only be used by first revving up the chain by tapping B repeatedly, and then holding it down to unleash the attack" is wrong. Anyone who has played Gears enough can tell you that revving up your chainsaw is unnecessary. To chainsaw someone, you only need to hold B while very close to an enemy. It should be noted that you must not be shot while doing it- if you are shot, it stops the process and you need to press and hold B again. While it isn't a big deal and doesn't detract from the article, it is a mistake and should be fixed.

I agree completely this is a stupid inacuricy

"Ban" in Germany

The game is not banned in Germany; it just not officially released. MS wanted to avoid the "Index" - an advertising ban. Some German stores sell the Austrian version of the game. Iirc just one game in the last decade was officially banned: Manhunt.

Vanitas

Although what you say is correct, it is far too complicated for the anglophone wikipedia audience to understand. "Banned in Germany" sounds much more flashy and that is more important than some minor subtleties. Please stop bothering the wikipedia project with your unimportant facts.

Brumak

I'll say yes Brumak should be merged with this article, probably in the trivia section. I also want to say that the work on this article as it appears now is great. No huge spoilers, just what you need to know about the game. So good job to everyone whose put effort into this. A request... Is it confirmed that Gears is the top selling 360 title? The Xbox 360 article says under its opening section that Gears has overtaken Call of Duty 2 as top 360 game. The fact that this has happened in under two weeks when CoD2 has had the spot since the consoles inception is impressive enough to merit mention don't you think? Rayfire 19:35, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cooperative achievements.

When it says that the achievements are awarded to the person who kills the most, it should be changed to it is awarded to both, I have the game and the coop level achievements are awarded to both people, and it should also be put in that cog tags are awarded to both if one of them picks it up when the other player is in the game.

Reception

Gears currently holds the #14 spot on Gamerankings.com, with an average score of 95.0%, on their list of games with at least 20 reviews, which is their standard.

Brumaks!

Hello I've recently bought GEARS OF WAR limited edition and i LOVE it except there is one thing that really annoys me!
