Astrid Smeplass (born 29 October 1996) is a Norwegian singer, songwriter and model.[2] In 2013, she placed fifth in the Norwegian version of Pop Idol, titled Idol - Jakten på en superstjerne.

Career

At the age of 16, Smeplass participated in the Norwegian version of Pop Idol in 2013, and at that time released a single, "Shattered", under the name Astrid Smeplass. The song was cowritten by American singer-songwriter Melanie Fontana. She then released "2AM" through Universal Music, which was released in the United States in 2015. In 2016, Smeplass supported Troye Sivan on his European tour, and she released a self-titled EP on 20 May 2016.[3] In 2017, Smeplass provided backing vocals on "Hey Hey Hey" by American singer Katy Perry from her album Witness.[4]

In 2017, her cover of Cezinando's "Vi er perfekt men verden er ikke det" was featured in the soundtrack for the fourth season of Skam and Smeplass performed it on a roof during the P3 Gull 2017 ceremony. On 30 June 2017, she released her second EP, Party's Over, which featured the singles "Breathe" and "Such a Boy". Two weeks later, the acoustic rendition of the EP was released, with an additional song titled "Mexico". In September 2017, her single "Think Before I Talk" topped the Norwegian charts and peaked at number 14 on the Swedish charts, where it was later certified platinum. It was also certified gold in Denmark, where it peaked at number nine.

In February 2018, Smeplass won Årets Spellemann (Artist of the Year) at the annual Spellemannsprisen (the Norwegian equivalent of the Grammys), being the first female artist to do so since 2003.[5] On 30 August 2019, her fourth EP was released, titled Trust Issues.[6] The EP features three singles released prior; "Someone New", "Emotion" and "The First One", as well as two other songs.[7]
