Happy Tree Friends show opening.

Happy Tree Friends is a black comedy Flash cartoon series by Mondo Mini Shows, created by Kenn Navarro, Aubrey Ankrum and Rhode Montijo.

As indicated on the official site, the show is "not recommended for small children or big babies." Notwithstanding the cuteness of its characters, the show is highly violent. Every episode features at least one character's violent and bloody death, except the two episodes: "Out on a Limb", "Nuttin' but the Tooth" and possibly "House Warming" (which still featured blood and gore and characters who would have possibly died of blood loss or shock).
While the violence of these deaths is compared to that of The Itchy and Scratchy Show (a short cartoon featured on The Simpsons), the Happy Tree Friends deaths are even more graphic and more drawn out.

The show is nearly free of dialogue; when the characters do speak, their words are severely garbled. Though it is obvious what each character's reaction is, their words can barely be understood.

According to the website, the idea for Happy Tree Friends was conceived by Rhode Montijo when he drew a yellow rabbit (slightly resembling Cuddles) on a piece of paper and wrote "Resistance Is Futile" underneath it.

Show characteristics

File:Happy Trails - Cuddles Giggles Toothy and Petunia.jpg
Left to Right: Cuddles, Giggles, Toothy, & Petunia riding a school bus.

The show usually takes place somewhere in the woodlands of North America (except for Buddhist Monkey); Cro-Marmot, Cub, Cuddles, Disco Bear, Flaky, Flippy, Giggles, Handy, Lifty, Mime, Mole, Nutty, Petunia, Pop, Russell, Shifty, Sniffles, Splendid and Toothy are all from the United States of America, Lumpy is from Canada, and Buddhist Monkey is from China. All are drawn in a sweet and innocent style that makes their deaths (or their actions leading to other's deaths) all the more shocking. Many of them show two front large buckteeth when they smile. All the Happy Tree Friends except for Lumpy and Sniffles have the same pink Care Bear heart-shaped noses. Happy Tree Friends have old-fashion style eyes which were used in very old cartoons except for Lumpy, Nutty, Flipped-Out Flippy and (sometimes) Lifty and Shifty in the TV series with Mole and Cro Marmot being unknown.

At the beginning of each episode, the characters are typically found in everyday situations. However, these situations always escalate into violence, mostly because of very unfortunate, surprising accidents with common, otherwise harmless props.

Each episode starts with introduction credits resembling a children's book, which portrays the show's logo, the episode's name and cast. After the ending credits, a moral follows. Examples are "Wash behind your ears!" and "Don't bite off more than you can chew!". While adding to the children's book theme, the moral sharply contrasts with the violence previously portrayed by the episode. Since the end of Season One, the moral is an ironic reference to what happened to the characters in that episode.

Each episode has a typical duration of less than three minutes. Usually only a few of the characters are used in a single episode, but occasionally larger episodes have been released where most of the characters appear.

Currently, new episodes are released once a month. An episode list can be seen on the official website, which contains a list of older episodes available on demand from the site. However, these episodes are only available for a limited time, as this list is exchanged with other episodes every other week.

It is worth noting that due to the nature of the show, characters who have merely implied deaths probably die anyway. For example, if a death scream is heard after the screen goes black, the watcher is expected to assume the obvious. Similarly, even if characters survive hideous injuries, they'll probably die from blood loss, or shock. Being caught in an explosion is another example of implied but uncertain death. However, this is not a consistent rule, since in "Eyes Cold Lemonade", Giggles is horribly injured, but quickly bandaged up and apparently survives.

Worldwide broadcast

In some countries, certain episodes can be seen on television, such as the French, Dutch, German, Polish, Brazilian, Italian and Latin American MTV channels, the Greek Mad Music Channel, Canadian television channel Razer and on the Australian Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) network. On June 10, 2005, the shorts began showing during Attack of the Show!. A series, Happy Tree Friends and Friends, began to air on August 29, 2005, as part of the late night Midnight Spank block, which are all part of G4 (a TV channel for men 18-34). The series has been reformed into it's own show rather than as a part of a compilation as before. Happy Tree Friends has also gained a collection of Audibles and an "IMVironment" for Yahoo!'s instant messenger. It is featured on many websites in which flash cartoons can be watched, such as Newgrounds, Atom Films, Purple Twinkie, and Albino Black Sheep.

Encouraged by the show's success, its creators have released four DVDs (First Blood, Second Serving, Third Strike, and Winter Break) containing the episodes shown on the website and others that have not been released. A collection consisting of three DVDs has also been released.

Selected episodes of Happy Tree Friends are regularly featured in the annual Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, among other diverse talents.

A video game for the series is also planned. Happy Tree Friends & Mondo Mini Shows are currently searching for a publisher. The half-hour TV series debuted on October 2, 2006 at Midnight on G4. This TV series is entirely about the Happy Tree Friends. Four of the characters (Cuddles, Flippy, Lumpy and Nutty) have Myspace accounts. The TV series got a sneak premiere at San Diego Comic Con on July 20, 2006 at 6:00 P.M. local time. The website has also announced that fans will be able to see 7 minute episode segments once each month starting September 1 through the end of the year. The first episodes to go online were "From Hero to Eternity", "Don't Yank My Chain", "Sea What I Found", and "Wishy Washy".The October 2 premiere episode will featured the following three segments: "Party Animal", "Ipso Fatso" and "Don't Yank my Chain".

The latest episodes are also "podcastable" (Podcast)

Main Characters

The characters each have their own distinct personality and traits.

Episodes: The number of episodes the character has featured in.
Kill Count: The number of deaths the character is responsible for.
Death Count: The number of times the character has died.

Cuddles

File:Cuddles (Happy Tree Friends).JPG
Cuddles, a fork and an electrical socket.

Animal: Eastern Cottontail
Place of Origin: Indianapolis, Indiana
Gender: Male
Episodes: 28
Kill Count:
Death Count: 29
V.A.: Kenn Navarro

A canary-yellow rabbit whose pursuits include skateboarding and swimming, Cuddles is claimed to be the de facto main character in the series, and stars in most of the advertisements. He dies in almost every episode he is in. Cuddles' favorite color seems to be pink, as he always wears pink bunny slippers and has pink cheeks. His fondness is particularly noticeable in the episode 'Sweet Ride', where as well as his regular cheeks and slippers, he ordered a pink strawberry flavored ice cream, and was riding his pink skateboard. He was one of the first characters to be created in Happy Tree Friends. It appears that Cuddles and Giggles are very close friends since they appear in many episodes together. Flaky is another friend with whom he shares several episodes with along with Toothy. Cuddles is rather mischievous, as evidenced in the episodes "From A to Zoo" and "Let it Slide". His account on Myspace mentions that he is actually allergic to carrots, although he enjoys blowing through a straw into a glass of carrot juice, which soothes his ears and tickles his pink little nose. He's Kenn Navarro's personal favorite. Starting with the new TV episodes, it appears that Cuddles' unlucky streak came to an end, as he does not die as much as he normally did in the internet shorts.

Giggles

File:Giggles.JPG
Giggles catching a fish.

Animal: Eastern Chipmunk
Place of Origin: Buffalo, New York
Gender: Female
Episodes:
Kill Count: 2
Death Count: 25
V.A.: Dana Belben

A pink chipmunk with a big red bow on her head, she is one of three female characters in the show, as told by one of the shows' editors. She has the personality of a young girl, as she enjoys frolicking through flowers, having tea parties, solving crossword puzzles and writing poetry, until disaster befalls her. She tends to giggle frequently, earning her name. Giggles apparently has hayfever, and sometimes dies from it.

Her Myspace account mentions that she wishes to see herself on a cereal box one day. Giggles is one of the main characters in the series and she appears in most advertisements along with Cuddles and Toothy. She also appears on a lot of the Happy Tree Friends merchandise. She seems to be very affectionate, hugging and kissing a lot of characters, therefore making it difficult to guess if she has a crush on any one character. However, in Remains to Be Seen, when she and Cuddles were zombies, they did the classic "eat spahgetti at the same time and kiss" only with brain stems, so lots of people support the Cuddles/Giggles pairing. She also spends a lot of time with Petunia and they seem to be best friends.

Handy

File:Handy.JPG
Handy Drinking some lemonade

Animal: Beaver
Place of Origin: Rochester, Minnesota
Gender: Male
Episodes: 5
Kill Count: 1
Death Count: 16
V/A: Warren Graff

An orange craftsman beaver with unexplained amputated hands. The stumps are covered with bandages. He wears a tool belt and a worker's helmet. He still manages to perform all sorts of tasks, but only off-screen. Ironically, his dam is littered with items that are operated by hand, like drills and yo-yos. Handy gets angry and frustrated at times, mostly because he seems to frequently forget the fact that he has no hands. In spite of his handicap, Handy seems to still be inexplicably capable of building things. Some of the fans of the Happy Tree Friends say that Handy has a crush on Petunia, referring to "House Warming" when Petunia hugged him. Also lately Handy seems to have shown an interest in flying. How many handless beavers does it take to change a light bulb? None, handless beavers can't change light bulbs.

Lumpy

File:Lumpy (Happy Tree friends).JPG
Lumpy and a falling anvil.

Animal: Moose
Place of Origin: London, Ontario
Gender: Male
Episodes:
Kill Count: 96
Death Count: 28
V.A.: Rhode Montijo

A light blue moose with apparently very low intelligence, bad teeth, disorbited eyes and mismatched antlers. Known to be the big brother, or perhaps babysitter, (in any case, he is older) of many of the other characters, he is also a complete klutz and the biggest idiot in the entire forest, and when considering the clumsiness and frequent foolishness of the other characters, that's really saying something. Furthermore, he screams like a girl.

He is one of the few grown-up characters in the show and the only character with a standard nose with two nostrils (the smaller Happy Tree Friends all have heart-shaped noses). Lumpy has probably appeared in the most episodes out of all the other Tree Friends, and most fans consider him the odd one out. There were some arguments about him being too close to Bullwinkle the Moose and "Montgomery Moose", the group's leader of The Get-Along Gang, so his right antler was drawn upside down. Lumpy has had many occupations in many episodes, including teacher, ticket clerk, bus driver, convenience store owner, and more. He is usually a fill-in character like Wooldoor Sockbat from Drawn Together. He is often shown in tremendously incongruous situations, such as lounging lazily, shirtless, in a hammock, while the rest of the Happy Tree Friends gang are playing in the snow. His low intelligence is often the cause of other characters' deaths, and sometimes his own, but nonetheless survives most episodes he features in. He lives in a trashy trailer and drives a Lincoln Continental. His Myspace account mentions that his favorite dessert is cheesecake and that he likes to talk to lettuce. He's made an appearance in every TV series episode except "Easy for you to Sleigh" and "And The Kitchen Sink". It was stupidity that killed the moose.

Toothy

File:Toothy.JPG
Toothy playing a game of hide and seek.

Animal: Beaver
Place of Origin: Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
Gender: Male
Episodes:
Kill Count:1 Death Count: 21
V.A.: Warren Graff

A light purple with big freckles but the biggest thing of this beaver is his very large buckteeth. Known to be a great fan of Splendid, he dresses up as Splendid in "Remains To Be Seen". Usually, he acts before he thinks, e.g. running away and throwing a lit candle on a stage curtain behind him. He tends to cry a lot when in distress. As with Cuddles, Lumpy and Giggles, he is another of the main characters since he's often seen with them on both Happy Tree Friends products and advertisements. Toothy seems to be a character who likes to play around on occasion, such as in the episode "A to Zoo". One could say that he is a slightly tweaked version of Cuddles. However, he behaves like other Happy Tree Friends. He is the ONLY remaining character who hasn't starred in a TV series episode yet.

Nutty

File:NuttyScreen.jpg
Nutty the candy-addicted squirrel.

Animal: Squirrel
Place of Origin: New Haven, Connecticut
Gender: Male
Episodes:
Kill Count:
Death Count: 17
V.A.: Michael 'Lippy' Lippman

A crazy green squirrel with an addiction for sugar. Nutty has various candies stuck to his fur, including a lollipop, candy cane and a candy apple. One of his wobbly eyes can move independently of the other. He is hyperactive and jittery, which may be caused by his high sugar intake, and sometimes he foams at the mouth when deprived of candy. His Myspace account mentions that he currently has fourteen dental cavities. Nutty often becomes irate when he can't get the candy he desires. In the Second Serving DVD, he had his own breakfast cereal called Sugar Frosted Nutty Honey, but there is hardly any cereal pieces in it - the picture only shows a large pile of sugar in the bowl. Nutty can be seen eating this cereal in "Concrete Solution".

Nutty is always in episodes that feature candy, with the curious exception of the episode "Eye Candy", where it was Toothy instead.

Petunia

File:Petunia (Happy Tree Friends).JPG
Petunia working as a fry cook in a burger restaurant.

Animal: Skunk
Place of Origin: Springfield, Illinois
Gender: Female
Episodes:
Kill Count:
Death Dount: 25
V.A.: Dana Belben

A blue skunk who always wears a pine scent car air freshener or deodorizer around her neck to cover up her skunk smell, even though she bathes many times a day, making it possible that she has no idea that skunks themselves don't smell. She often appears working with food, and appears to enjoy cooking.

Petunia is one of the more unfortunate Happy Tree Friends, and has some of the most gruesome deaths. She seems to be fairly intelligent and shows some self-preservation instinct, referring to the episode where Lumpy is a scoutmaster. We learn in the TV episode "Wishy Washy" she also has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and is a neat freak/germophobe that has to have everything just right.

Sniffles

File:Sniffles (Happy Tree Friends).JPG
Sniffles and an ant.

Animal: Anteater
Place of Origin: Phoenix, Arizona
Gender: Male
Episodes:
Kill Count: 4
Death Count: 24
V.A.: Liz Stuart

A nerdy bluish-grey anteater who likes to play in the sandbox, listening music with headphones, solve square roots and read about science and maths. He always gets into trouble, and it seems like his worst enemies are actually his favorite snack: ants. Sniffles has a rather high I.Q., as proven in the episodes "Happy Trails Pt. 2" and "Suck It Up", since he builds or invents things that are far more advanced than most things the other characters make. Sniffles also does not have a heart-shaped nose like the other Happy Tree Friends because he has a snout. Despite his book smarts, he's still not clever or lucky enough to avoid gruesome fates. He is one of the characters who die in almost every episode they're seen in. After Episode 5 of the TV series he seems to star in one segment right up to Episode 11 (with the exception of episode 9! In "Blast from the Past" Sniffles FINALLY succeeds in eating one of his favorite snacks without getting killed by it in return! (An Ant.)

Splendid

File:Splendid (Happy Tree Friends).JPG
Splendid has a bright idea.

Animal: Northern flying squirrel
Place of Origin: New York, New York
Gender: Male
Episodes: 7
Kill Count: 30
Death Count: 2
V.A.: Rhode Montijo

A sky blue superheroic flying squirrel who often does housework. His superpowers are based loosely on those of Superman; he can fly, shoot laserbeams from his eyes, has super strength, supersonic hearing, and turning back time. Despite his powers, and sometimes because of them, he commonly ends up unintentionally killing the characters he rescues, and is usually oblivious to it afterwards. In fact Splendid may save one character but accidentally kill other characters in the process. Due to his ability to reverse time, as demonstrated in "Better Off Bread", it is possible that Splendid can save the various Happy Tree Friends from the horrible deaths that happen to them, and bring them back to life, but this is never fully shown in an episode. Splendid seems to be an adult because of his voice and super hero abilities. Splendid is the only character who did not die in the internet shorts. However, he has died once after being over-exposed to his one and only super-hero weakness... Kryptonut, an obvious reference to Superman's Kryptonite weakness.

Flaky

File:Flaky.JPG
Flaky the frightened porcupine.

Animal: North American Porcupine
Place of Origin: Ann Arbor, Michigan
Gender: Asexual
Episodes: 24
Kill Count:
Death Count: 24
V.A.: Nica Lorber

An androgynous Red Porcupine whose quills are full of dandruff, thus his/her name. Flaky's spiny quills are often what kills him/her or the other Happy Tree Friends. Cuddles is Flaky's closest friend, though some wonder how they get along when Cuddles is almost always pulling Flaky into trouble against his/her will. Flaky is normally frightened and delicate in the violent world of the Happy Tree Friends, understandingly cautious to the point of paranoia, though in rare cases he/she does something brave, such as riding a haunted house or putting his/her foot into a nail to avoid an avalanche. Flaky is apparently allergic to peanuts, as they cause him/her to swell up like a balloon! This is proved in the episode 'Party Animal'. It also seems that Flaky has somewhat of a weak stomach as proved in "The Wrong Side of the Tracks" and "Wingin' it". Despite Flaky's best efforts to save or otherwise help a character in danger, the only thing he/she can do in responce to failing to help is giving off a shy laugh, which is used very frequently by Flaky in a number of situations. Though people would see Flaky as a coward in avoiding things associated with danger, he/she does face his/her fears every once in a while for the greater good, which would make Flaky overly timid as opposed to merely a coward.

Warren Graff, one of the show's writers says that Flaky is a girl. But Rhode Montijo says that Flaky is a boy. There has never been an absolute answer given for this dispute, since commentary is a non-cannonical form of information or proof on the matter.

The Mole

File:The Mole (Happy Tree Friends).JPG
Mole operating a spotlight.

Animal: Mole
Place of Origin: Roanoke, Virginia
Gender: Male
Episodes:
Kill Count: 15
Death Count: 12
V.A.: N/A

A blind mole with a mole on his face (which served as a detonation device in "Mole in the City") and dark glasses. He usually wears a purple turtleneck. Like Mime, he rarely speaks. It is possible that he is not only blind, but also mute as well, but he is not deaf. Disaster follows his blind bumblings, and he seems to love stuffed animals. His actions and character are that much like those of Mr. Magoo. In several instances, he is seen using another tree friends severed head as if it was a Melon/Pumpkin/Bowling Ball. He doesn't appear to have his driver's licence revoked, since he has been seen driving. He also has an arch-nemesis known as The Rat, most likely because they both have careers in industrial espionage.

On the web shorts, The Mole rarely dies, and usually causes harm to the other Tree Friends due to his lack of eyesight. However, in the TV series, he begins to die a lot more often.

In "Blind Date", The Mole was supposed to go on a date with Giggles. But due to a series of misunderstandings, he went on a date with Lumpy instead.

Disco Bear

File:Disco Bear.JPG
Disco Bear disco dancing under a disco ball.

Animal: Bear
Place of Origin: New York, New York
Gender: Male
Episodes: 6
Kill Count: 10
Death Count: 9
V.A.: Peter Herrmann

A golden bear with an orange Afro who likes to dance to disco music. He wears 1970s style clothing such as his bell bottoms and his dancing platform shoes. He usually gets everyone around him in life threatening trouble while dancing, but mistakes their movements of pain for his funky dance moves. He is mostly seen either showing off or trying to impress other female characters, such as Giggles and Petunia, usually killing them in the process. Despite his failures in wooing the ladies (and the fact that the ladies he tries to get are in their teens, while he is an adult), he seems to be pretty well off financially as we've seen him with a private ski cabin in "Ski Ya, Wouldn't Wanna Be Ya" and his own submarine in "Sea What I Found". Disco Bear also has quite bad eating habits as seen in "A Change of Heart". He's also one of the few characters known to be without a different colored belly, as well as the only one to have chest hair, which proves just how old he is.

Russell

File:Russel (Happy Tree Friends).JPG
Russell the Atlantic Sea Otter Pirate.

Animal: Sea Otter
Place of Origin: Boston, Massachusetts
Gender: Male
Episodes:
Kill Count:
Death Count: 10
V/A: Jeff Biancalana (1st), Francis Carr (2nd)

A turquoise sea otter pirate with typical pirate accessories like a Jolly Roger's hat, a hook, an eyepatch and two wooden peglegs. He enjoys fishing, sailing and eating seafood. Russell's initial character design depicted him with a five o'clock shadow, though since his early appearances, it seems as though he shaves regularly. Typically, his vocabulary consists only of 'Yar!' and 'Yar?', though in the episode "Get Whale Soon", he also says things like 'Aha!' and 'Huh?' Because Russell spends most of his time in the water, he is rarely seen with the other characters, though he does appear in a few episodes with Lumpy, although nowadays he seems to appear with all the others as well.

Mime

File:Mime (Happy Tree Friends).JPG
Mime,entertaining

Animal: Deer
Place of Origin: Aliso Viejo, California
Gender: Male
Episodes:
Kill Count:1
Death Count: 12
V/A: N/A

A purple deer with a painted face who wears a black/purple and white striped shirt. He usually doesn't speak because he is a mime, causing others to have a hard time understanding him. He is talented with circus skills like juggling and creating balloon animals. His attempts to entertain his fellow Happy Tree Friends often have fatal consequences. Mime is also very fond of peanuts, going so far as to stick his hand in a blender to eat them. He is also SLIGHTLY on the pudgy side (most noticeable in the opening credits for "Keeping it Reel" when his picture pops up.) He's slowly becoming a very popular character, appearing in more and more episodes in the TV series.

Lifty and Shifty

File:Lifty & Shifty.JPG
Lifty (left) and Shifty (right) investigating their fridge.

Animal: Common Raccoons
Place of Origin: Auburn, California
Gender: Males
Episodes Kill Count: 7
Death Count: 14
V.A.: Mark Giambruno and Kenn Navarro

Two green kleptomaniac raccoon brothers who are actually twins. They frequently steal merchandise from the other Happy Tree Friends. The two mostly steal from Lumpy - in "Milkin' It", they stole a cow from Lumpy's farm, and in "Meat Me For Lunch" they stole meat from Lumpy's store.

Although they have the same markings, personality and voice, Shifty wears a fedora, and he sometimes bosses Lifty around. Despite the smirks on their faces and their kleptomania, they almost always end up perishing in the process. Their green color implies money, greed and selfishness, relating to their 'criminal duo' personalities. They also have a trademark evil snigger. They've both shown to have above-average intelligence as in their modus operandi and their underwater chess-playing in "Sea What I Found", meaning that their failures are probably a result of bad luck.

In "Ipso Fatso", they FINALLY pulled out a successful heist, making off with a big slab of beef from a meat locker and not getting caught - or dying. And in "Concrete Solution", they run over Lumpy and then steal his wallet. That is another thief act of theirs that they didn't die after.

In "Gems the Breaks" Lifty and Shifty accidentally found out Splendid's weakness and, although they were boiled to death, they were indirectly responsible for being the first (and so far ONLY) ones to kill Splendid!

Cro-Marmot

File:Cro-marmot (Happy Tree Friends).JPG
Cro-Marmot the prehistoric marmot frozen in a block of ice.

Animal: Prehistoric Marmot
Place of Origin: Alaska
Gender: Male
Episodes:
Kill Count: 2
Death Count: 3
V.A.: N/A

Cro-Marmot is a marmot frozen in a block of ice. He is somehow able to perform many tasks while entirely encased in ice, such as throwing snowballs, somewhat akin to how Handy can perform construction and other tasks without any visible hands. To keep himself frozen, Cro-Marmot stays mainly in cold areas, and sometimes drives an ice cream truck. Cro-Marmot hardly dies in the series, the reason being that the ice he's usually encased in protects him from disaster. Unless something happens to the ice, he is almost invulnerable to most unfortunate events. The only episode in which he is not frozen is "Dino-Sore Days", as that episode occurred during the ancient times when he was not frozen. Cro-Marmot usually appears in the series as a background character, and has hardly any showcase appearances, but has been marked his first "starring" appearance since Snow What in the episode "Wipe Out".

Flippy

File:Flippy.JPG
A Flipped-Out Flippy.

Animal: Bear
Place of Origin: Fort Dix, New Jersey
Gender: Male
Episodes: 8
Kill Count: 35 (approx)
Death Count: 4
V.A.: Aubrey Ankrum

A green bear who is a veteran of war, and a green beret at that. He "flips out" when he hears or sees something that reminds him of war. For example, in the episode "Flippin' Burgers", he walked into the burger joint happily, until he saw Cuddles and Giggles laughing because Cuddles squirted ketchup onto Giggles. This sent Flippy out of control. His Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is the cause of his grisly, guerrilla warfare. In most episodes he appears in, he is the cause of everybody's deaths. When he goes insane, his eyes turn a different color. Another sign of his insanity is that his voice changes from a cute, innocent high pitch to an evil, deep low pitch. Oddly, Flippy does not actually 'Flip Out' when he helps to kill Flaky in "Happy Trails Part 2". This can be seen by the fact that his eyes are normal and he does not kill anyone else.

Flippy's preferred methods of killing and his own background are likely to be references to Rambo. This is especially evident in "Hide and Seek", where Flippy mimicked Rambo's actions in a scene from Rambo: First Blood Part 2, as he hunted and killed his friends in the woods while they were playing a game of hide and seek. Flippy even carries a bowie knife similar to that wielded by Rambo. He also possesses hand grenades. A deluxe edition Flippy figurine shows him with the more modern M67 fragmentation grenade. From the stripes on Flippy's combats, it can be inferred that he has the rank of a sergeant. His uniform is a mix of the United States Army Special Forces, green beret, and British Royal Marine Commandos. Though, the shield patch on his beret, in the episodes his chevrons are closer in color to the green beret's but pointing down the sleeve like the commandos, and flash back in "Easy For You To Sleigh" he was in a bamboo cage identical to the cages that the Vietcong used to hold US personnel when they were on transport to P.O.W. camps.

Flippy's Myspace account mentions that he enjoys jogging, feeding birds, eating chocolate chip cookies, and sewing. He is also one of the few characters who rarely die in the series. He has killed all the characters at least once, except for Splendid, Disco Bear and Cro-Marmot. In "Keepin' It Reel" you see Flippy and Lumpy and the circle closes and you hear what sounds like Flippy snapping Lumpy's neck. Flippy bit Lumpy's arm off in "Remains to be Seen" but Lumpy actually defeats him, this is the only time Flippy has been defeated.

Flippy rarely turns back to normal in the episodes. He actually does turn back to normal at the end of "Party Animal" and briefly in "Flippin' Burgers". Though not a main character, he is considered a fan favourite and is a popular character of the series. Flippy is also a deep sleeper as evident in "Easy For You To Sleigh" except when it comes to cookies; he can hear a cookie a mile away.

Pop

File:Pop (Happy Tree Friends).JPG
Pop finds a brick clogging the blades of his lawnmower.

Animal: Grizzly Bear
Place of Origin: Los Angeles, California
Gender: Male
Episodes:
Kill Count: 14
Death count: 8
V/A: Aubrey Ankrum

A light brown bear who is another adult character, the stereotypically clueless, bathrobe-wearing, pipe-smoking 1950s style sitcom father. His inattention (or at times simply attention) often means bad things for his only son, Cub, although it's very clear that he certainly cares about him. Often he is ignorant of his son's death, and continues throughout the episode as if nothing happened. In the TV series, he becomes more aware of his son's demises, as evidenced in "Ipso Fatso", "As You Wish", "Gem's The Breaks" and "Who's to Flame". His wife's whereabouts are unknown, but rest assured he can handle the stress of being a single parent. Pop is another character who rarely dies in the show. Pop along with Cub, is currently featured in the preloader image with the warning that said 'Small Children Should Not Watch'. It can also be noted that Pop has a much more intelligible way of speaking, as is especially notable in the episode "Water Way To Go", especially towards the end of the episode.

One question on 'Question Kenn' asked if Disco Bear and Pop could be the same character, though this is certainly not the case as they have been seen as separate characters in episodes in which they both appeared in. This is especially evident in "Sea What I Found" when Pop appears to disapprove of Disco Bear's tastes. However, it is possible that they are related.

Cub

Animal: Grizzly Bear
Place of Origin: Los Angeles, California
Gender: Male
Episodes: 14

Death Count: 25

A very young light brown bear who wears a diaper and a propeller hat, and is the son of Pop. He likes to wander carelessly around and operate machines all by himself. He is doomed both by his father's attention and the lack of it. Being the youngest member of the Happy Tree Friends, he is often seen carelessly drifting into death-introducing hazards. Despite his appearance being similar to a baby, Cub's level of intelligence and behavior can be attributed to that of a young child.

Other Characters

Buddhist Monkey

The creators thought this character was such a great idea that they felt he deserved his own show, which has currently had only two episodes. These episodes were originally exclusive for the second and third DVDs. However, in June 2006, the episode "Enter The Garden" was released on the website. As his name implies, he is a monkey who lives his life in the way of Buddha. He has brown fur with four dots in the shape of a square on his forehead and wears what appears to be a brown, monk-like robe with a number of beads worn as a belt. He is often very calm and enjoys peaceful libraries and gardens, but he is known for his sudden rages when the evil Generic Tree Ninjas ruin books and destroy gardens. He has only ever killed the ninjas and nobody else. He has made several cameo appearances in the regular episodes. Such appearances include Buddhist Monkey playing on a cinema screen and Cub playing a claw-grabbing prize machine with an image of Buddhist Monkey on the side of it. He is the only character who has not died yet.

Elephant Balloon Vendor

A stylistic character only appearing in "Mole and the City. This large elephant sells balloons to a child, until he is cut apart by raining shards of glass broken by The Mole. His death in turn saves The Mole’s life, as the balloons released offer a soft landing for him.

Giggles's Mother

Appearing only in the episode "Helping Hands", Giggles’s mother answered the door to her home when Splendid came to drop off Giggles’s body. She looks almost identical to Giggles, only much taller and wearing an apron. With the exception of Pop, she is the only parent of a main character to appear in any episode.

Mittens/Honey

An intensely cute kitten who can be considered a pet rather than a person in the animal world of Happy Tree Friends. While not actually inducing death, Mittens/Honey has a tendency to inflict extra pain in typical Happy Tree Friends fashion, for example cutting off Sniffles' frozen tongue and using it as a cushion. The reason this cute kitten has two names is that the crew, thus far, haven't really decided between the two as to which the kitty's name is. She appears in the episodes: Blind Date, Tongue Twister Trouble and Who's To Flame. She just died in Blind Date, where she was hit by Mole's car. She is seen in some happy Tree Friends images.

Panda Mom

An innocent Panda mother that is saved by Buddhist Monkey from the Unnamed Ninjas. She and her child only appeared in the episode "Books of Fury".

Pig Child

The final character to appear in "Mole and the City", this child appears devastated by the Elephant Balloon Vendor’s death. But he soon perks up when The Mole gives him the balloons, which then send him floating away into the sky. It can be assumed he will somehow die.

Generic Tree Friends

Used en masse when needed, for example, in a large audience. They are light in color, faceless, and usually appear as all rabbits or all bears. They are rarely used as not many episodes require large crowds. In the Happy Tree Friends and Friends episode in which the dirty chair's spring goes right through Flaky's body bringing out his/her large intestine, and got smashed by the theater chair, you can see a Generic Tree Friend in the back row.

Generic Tree Ninjas

A special group of Generic Tree Friends from Japan, who terrorize the sacred places where Buddhist Monkey lives. These dark ninjas are exclusive to the Buddhist Monkey episodes, both of which have recently been shown online. They always seem to be ruining gardens and wrecking libraries. This always brings on the full wrath of Buddhist Monkey, who will then proceed to defeat them all. Unlike stereotypical ninjas, they are dressed in dark green.

HTF Enemies

The Ants, an ant family

A family (Mother, Son, Daughter and Baby) of ants with sadistic manners of defending themselves from Sniffles. The Ants always kill Sniffles when he attempts to eat them, after first inflicting gruesome tortures upon him such as shredding his tongue with a paper shredder and then dripping lemon juice onto it. Apparently they were friends with Sniffles in caveman times until Sniffles came to that time in a time machine and ate the mother. Caveman Sniffles then ate father ant and liked it.

Total amount of times the ants killed Sniffles: 5

"Crazy Ant-ics" "Tongue Twister" "A Hard Act to Swallow" "Suck it Up" "Tongue in Cheek"

Crazed Dog

A pet store dog purchased by Pop and Cub in the episode "Doggone It" that becomes dangerous and deadly when it hears a whistle. He has the same eyes like Cub and can be very violent.

Cursed Idol

A maya statue which brings death and bad luck. When it appears, everyone who is near the statue dies brutish. It's starring in the episodes: Treasure this Idol Moments, Hello Dolly, and Idol Curiosity. It appears briefly in the episodes: Crazy Antics, Happy Trails Part 1, Milkin' It, Get Whale soon, Class Act, Remains to be Seen, The Wrong Side Of The Tracks, and Every Litter bit Hurts.

The Rat

A stylistically drawn rat, similar to the villains in crime noir, and mortal enemy of The Mole. He has appeared only in the episode "Mole and the City", and was killed in an explosion. The Rat wears a trench coat and a Fedora, has black fur, and long, scraggly whiskers. His vehicle seems to be a giant see-though ball, much like those used by domestic rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, etc. Whether he will ever appear again is uncertain, as the style in which he is drawn differs drastically from the other Happy Tree Friends.

The Cursed Earthquake

The Cursed Earthquake appears in "Idol Curiosity" whenever the Cursed Idol is removed from it's shrine. It is unknown if we will ever "see" the Cursed Earthquake again in future episodes.

The Crow

Irritates Lumpy and only appeared in "Aw, Shucks!" he is done without outlines much like the background.

The Turtle

Follows Lumpy around and tries to eat him and eventually did, it only appeared in "Letter Late Than Never".

Then Sniffles was forced to spin the oar until it spun like an airplane propeller, ripping out his tongue, brain, and guts. TV Series

Happy Tree Friends gained its own show in 2006. It premiered on October 2, 2006. This makes sense, seeing as how the characters are already part of G4's Late Night Peep Show, a show currently airing on the network. So far 39 segments have been announced meaning 13 episodes for Season 1. Pictures of the first 6 episodes can be seen on G4's website.

Cultural References in Episodes

  • Better off Bread: When Splendid turns the world around it is reference to what Superman did.
  • Remains To Be Seen: Giggles and Cuddles do the famous past bit from Lady and the Tramp.
  • Blind Date: The semi truck Handy is operating on has the Optimus Prime symbol from Transformers.
  • Ipso Fatso: Petunia signs a square shape, indicating that Disco Bear is a square, like was done in Pulp Fiction. When Disco Bear exercises in the meat locker, it parodies the Rocky film franchise.
  • Aw, Shucks: When Lumpy axes open a door to get the crow he pokes his face though and speaks like Jack Nicholson did when he axed a door in The Shining.

Episode Goofs

  • Spin Fun Knowin ya: Cuddles briefly has yellow cheeks. Also giggles doesn't have her light pink stripe and Toothy has sticking out hair. Giggles stripe doesn't apper in some of the older cartoon character screen she doesn't have it either
  • Stealing the Spotlight: After Cub has his nails (more or less) removed it's possible to see his face has got a couple of nails still on him, some holes where nails once were and some plasters. When Lumpy's light show is starting to make cub come alight, all these injuries have disappeared
  • Take A Hike: After Toothy's arm falls off and Lumpy is running from the bear. Toothy is shown with the swollen arm, connected to him. Sniffles mouth and nose are separated
  • Party animal: When Flippy pushes Mime into the blender his entire body is sliced up. However, in the scene where Flippy is looking for Sniffles his body is still intact! Also the Mole went in the wrong direction when Flaky exploded.
  • Tongue in Cheek: Sniffles hand gets badly injured by the ants, but later in the episode there's no damage on it at all.
