AfD follow-up

Hello, wanted to follow up with you in regard to the many comics/toys/character/etc. AfDs. I'm curious if you think a larger discussion needs to take place, whether in general or on a project page. I think, frankly, that so many nominations indicate that, to a certain extent, a process has fallen apart, especially in regard to articles where there are some reliable sources. Again, I have no personal interest in any of these article topics--I've seen exactly one Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, for example. But editors spend a lot of time discussing these AfDs, and the arguments, logic, outcomes, etc. seem to be all over the place. Thank you, and take care. Caro7200 (talk) 18:13, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Caro7200, Discussions are good, but I am not sure what can be discussed and where. We could discuss refining WP:NFICTION on its talk page, but it is not criticized much, as far as I can tell. The problem is that we have many old articles that don't need modern standards (not that they are that old). We are slowly catching up to them, and while there are thousands of articles that likely need pruning, I don't think there is any way to speed up the process, given that there are also editors who object to anything that is not a full AfD (as in prods or redirects without discussions). Mass nominations have also been discouraged as they can combine articles that are different despite appearances. Do let me know if you have any suggestions, but I think we are doing the best we can. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 00:53, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. I always assume good faith, and, of course, our agendas and biases are expressed in the very way we all choose to edit. I am, personally, more "offended" by overly promotional BLPs or overly promotional articles about businesses, for example, than I am by somewhat RS'd comic articles. I may choose to defend some these articles on a case-by-case basis, so please know that it is nothing personal. Thank you. Caro7200 (talk) 17:50, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Kurier Litewski

On 31 August 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Kurier Litewski, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Kurier Litewski was the first periodical newspaper of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and retained the Lithuanian state name until 1840, despite the final partition of the Commonwealth in 1795? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Kurier Litewski. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Kurier Litewski), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Cossack szlachta

Good sir, would you care to lend your opinion in the Talk of the Szlachta article regarding so-called "Cossack szlachta"? Someone wants to commit an historical atrocity. Thank you. - Exxess (talk) 03:03, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

False Claim - "Completely Irrelevant Aside on Gaelic Society; the Term discussed, "sliocht," had no etymological relation to "szlachta"

A comment, pro or con, from you would be appreciated in the Talk of the Szlachta article as concerns Gaelic "sliocht" and Polish "szlachta." An editor removed something. I do not think it should have been removed. Thank you. - Exxess (talk) 03:06, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Andel's Hotel Łódź

Thanks. I would be grateful if you could explain it to me. I don't know how to add interwiki. You could also check the article List of tallest buildings in Poland which I recently heavily edited to see if anything could be improved or changed.— Preceding unsigned comment added by PavKls (talkcontribs) 15:30, August 31, 2020 (UTC)

Profaning a monument - in your hands

Dear Piotrus, the self-avowed Cabalist,

See my the edits and quick comments to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Profaning_a_monument#Globalized_in_4_steps

As I do not have much time on my hands and (too) often I random edit in the mobile UI, where even touchups are clunky at best (when my WikiDragon tendencies get the better of me), I leave it in under the aegis, auspices and such of your deft WP:TINC & WP:NPOV Mind & Fingers.

Bows, logging off for a while.

Update: I claimed HOAX here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Epicgenius#Desecrating

Reply tool

The number of comments posted with the Reply Tool from March through June 2020. People used the Reply Tool to post over 7,400 comments with the tool.

The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.

  • More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
  • Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
  • Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[1]

The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF).

The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.

New requirements for user signatures

  • The new requirements for custom user signatures began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
  • Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected temporarily. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can check your signature and see lists of active editors whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please read the help page.

Next: New discussion tool

Next, the team will be working on a tool for quickly and easily starting a new discussion section to a talk page. To follow the development of this new tool, please put the New Discussion Tool project page on your watchlist.

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:06, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2020 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with 598 and 605 points being eliminated, and all but two of the contestants who reached the final round having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • Free Hong Kong Bloom6132, with 1478 points gained mainly from 5 featured lists, 12 DYKs and 63 in the news items;
  • IndonesiaHaEr48 with 1318 points gained mainly from 2 featured articles, 5 good articles and 8 DYKs;
  • England Lee Vilenski with 1201 points mainly gained from 2 featured articles and 10 good articles.

Between them, contestants achieved 14 featured articles, 14 featured lists, 2 featured pictures, 87 good articles, 90 DYK entries, 75 ITN entries, 95 featured article candidate reviews and 81 good article reviews. Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. DYK for CENTOS (charity)

On 2 September 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article CENTOS (charity), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/CENTOS (charity). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, CENTOS (charity)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:03, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

At the very least, we should merge or redirect this to Bill Morrison. The comic should be mentioned there. (This says that the comic was nominated for four Eisner Awards. That's consistent with this.)

The best sources of info on a comic like this are probably magazines from the 90s, which are difficult to access. I can find some brief mentions in newspaper archives, but nothing that would provide much content for the Wiki page. I do trust that this is reliable, but that's not the sort of source we'd normally use. Zagalejo^^^ 14:32, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Zagalejo, Thanks! If you haven't, please copy this to the article's talk page where others interested in this can see it. Cheers, Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:01, 3 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/KissAnime.
