I am not an expert on this matter, but it appears that this photo is only available on Italian-language Wikipedia for copyright reasons. Due to differences in national copyright laws, this photo appears to only be in the public domain in Italy. A note on the photo's page explicitly says that it cannot be moved to Wikimedia Commons, which is where it would have to go to be universally accessible on other Wikipedias, such as the English-language one. The relevant Italian law cited on the file says that photos taken in Italy that are "non-creative" enter the public domain 21 years after their creation. American copyright law does not have an equivalent rule, and because English-language Wikipedia is hosted on servers based in the US, its public domain policy is based on the laws of the United States, per the image policy.

Again, I'm not an expert on these policies, so it's possible I may be wrong, but my understanding is that the photo can't be moved onto English-language Wikipedia at this time. Yes, I see that picture, but it can't be uploaded unless it complies with the image policy. It looks like it's a file photo from AFP, and without any indication that it's been freely licensed, it can't be added. While photos of deceased people have generally more leeway than photos of living people, this policy points out that a photo taken from a press agency like AFP is unlikely to be judged to meet fair use standards in most cases.--Sunshineisles2 (talk) 01:35, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Here are some notable deaths of this year as they currently appear. The answer is almost always twice.

Mikhail Gorbachev: once in the lead sentence, once in the infobox.

Pelé: once in the lead sentence, once in the infobox.

Angela Lansbury: once in the lead sentence, once in the infobox.

Sidney Poitier: once in the lead sentence, once in the infobox.

Madeleine Albright: once in the lead sentence, once in the infobox.

Jean-Luc Godard: once in the lead sentence, once in the infobox.

Olivia Newton-John: once in the lead sentence, once in the infobox.

Loretta Lynn: once in the lead sentence, once in the infobox.

Exceptions are usually cases like Queen Elizabeth II, where her death and funeral were so newsworthy that they had entire separate articles. Barbara Walters' death is big news, but it's extremely unlikely her funeral will be so newsworthy it will inspire its own article. But if it does, it can be linked then if necessary. We're talking about lead sections, right? In the current revision, Gorbachev's date of death mentioned exactly once in the first sentence, and a second time in the appropriate parameter in the infobox. If we're talking about the whole article, it's mentioned a third time in the "death" section. In Barbara Walters' article, her date of death is mentioned three times: the lead sentence, the infobox, and in the "health and death" section. Even if, as you claimed, there was some policy that it had to be mentioned three times (and there's not), adding a second mention of her date of death to the lead paragraphs would make it four.Sunshineisles2 (talk) 07:05, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
