First appearance in Doom?

- Rocket jumping first appears in Doom, where it is used to reach the secret exit in E3M6 (it is possible to reach the exit without rocket jumping, but rocket jumping was the intended method according to John Romero). [1]
I'm not sure I buy this as an appearance of rocket jumping. It's true that it uses a rocket to propel the player (horizontally), but that's not really "jumping," at least not in the sense that people rocket jump today. On that page, Romero even says that they did not anticipate rocket jumping in Quake, so it seems that he considers the two different. Brighterorange 5 July 2005 15:21 (UTC)

How do you account for the fact that Romero (whom I trust as an authority) apparently uses "rocket jumping" to mean something else, since they did not anticipate it in Quake, yet knew about the horizontal maneuver when making Doom years earlier? - I find the fact that they didn't anticipate it somewhat puzzling, but it doesn't change that the term "rocket jump" is used for the trick in the context of Doom (perhaps because in Doom, running off a ledge is considered the same as "jumping"). The term "horizontal rocket jump" is also used to denote horizontal rocket propulsion in Quake, so there's no reason to ignore this usage. What about Grenade Jumping in Marathon?
Marathon had grenade jumping, and predated both Doom and Quake.
Marathon II required grenade jumping to get to some locations.
True it wasn't available on the PC until after Quake--does that disqualify it?

Hello!
I remember a famous Quake demo on a webpage called "The Rocketjumpers Guide To Quake". I think it was hosted on Planetquake.com once, but has disappeared for a long time. Maybe someone has a copy of the page and the demo and could reference it here? It is in a way a historical document :)
Metroid bomb-jumping
Should this be added to the article? It's similar in technique, though in Metroid it's an intended strategy, and required in many places. (Though even in some of the other examples, it is intended, even if it's only to access secret levels.) I suppose the one major difference is that in bomb-jumping in Metroid does not damage the player, and it's more a matter of learning the proper timing to reach greater heights. Where's Quake?
how can there be an article on Rocket jumping and no mention of Quake? madness. I understand it may not have been the first game to involve or have the possibility of rocket jumping but it was hugely significant. A mod based around rocket jumping was created, Rocket Arena, which I also note doesn't actually mention rocket jumping! madness. Per the verifiability policy and the no original research policy I have removed a substantial portion of the material in the article as being original research. See these diffs. The article content policies require reliable sources to support the material. Some of the sources in the article certainly would be hard to argue as reliable as well. Based on the amount of reliable sources available, I believe this article and the related articles would be better served if they were merged into a single article on specialized gaming moves. Call of Duty
Rocket Jumping (and grenade jumping) have formed a large part of the Call of Duty Series since their release, and there are also large communities of people exploiting the technique to reach normally unreachable areas. Removing content from the Team Fortress 2 section
Hello, just letting this page know that I am removing most of the TF2 section's content and moving it to Other adaptations. This is because it violates WP:GAMEGUIDE and WP:IRRELEVANT. The content covered the exact steps on how to do rocket jumps in TF2, and I think it would be better on the TF2 Wiki. You can find the edit differences here.

Potential rename to Explosive jumping?
Hi,
I was editing this page today and was wondering whether we should change the name of the page to "explosive jumping", with Rocket Jumping being a redirect, because it would allow for a wider variety of games to be included, as well as different types of explosion-based propulsion. This would also allow the TF2-related content to remain, but in their own sections for different types of explosive jumping.
Of course, this isn't necessary, but I do feel "explosive jumping" should at least be mentioned in the opening sentence or as a redirect. DudeTheNinja ( speak to me | spy on me ) 10:05, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
Minecraft
Hello, everybody! I know that Minecraft isn't known that well for rocket jumping or explosives in general, however recently I saw a video of somebody using a lit block of TNT, the ingame explosive, to propel themselves towards a test subject and then successfully eliminating them with a shovel, most likely mocking/mimicking the stylings of Team Fortress 2 based on the choice of weapon (although I may be wrong). There are also countless TNT cannon designs, although I don't want this section to be a TNT tutorial, hehe! Maybe we could let Minecraft join the vertical section, perhaps something similar to... "In the game Minecraft (2011), the player can activate TNT (an explosive item within the game) in order to propel themselves more quickly. While it is usually fatal when attempted, equipping armour can render most damage useless. It can also be attempted with Creepers, an in-game entity that explodes upon close contact." I'm not sure if it seems too game guide-like, so that's why I wanted to run it over with y'all! Please tell me if any corrections should be made before I add it. Thanks.

Misinformation in intention in TF2
The article says that rocket jumping is unintentional, but if you play the game and look at some of the soldier's unlocks (and, to a lesser extent demo man) include rocket jumping such as the base jumper, the manntreads, the gunboats, the market gardener, the rocket jumper, the sticky jumper, and the base jumper has rocket jumping as a core mechanic or the entire reason for using the weapon, as well as missing engineer and pyro as explosive jumpers.
