Ciaran Mac Mathuna is one of a handful of people, including Seamus Ennis, who have spent much of their lives preserving and popularising Ireland's heritage of traditional music. The honours he has received for his work in this area testify to his importance and, accordingly, I have changed the rating to 'mid'. Jim Bruce 13:00, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article By Wiki User Stevardo 56, April 15/09, BELFAST, IRELAND.

Ciaran Mac Mathuna (now retired) was in my opinion one of the foremost recorders of all aspects of Irish Folk Music and cultural traditions. His Sunday radio programme "MA CHEOL THU" with its theme song "THE LARK IN THE CLEAR AIR" was perhaps the best programme involved in keeping these traditions to the fore and was a great co-ordinator also in this field. For over 50 years Ciaran with a few others travelled the country collecting history and folklore and the musical heritage attached to it.

Only on one occasion did I meet Ciaran in person and I was very impressed by his quiet manner and modesty. That occasion was at a commemoration event in Slane Co.Meath held annualy for the Irish Poet Francis Ledwidge. Ciarans wife Dolly was a fine folk singer and I heard her sing here in Belfast at the Ulster Hall quite a few years back.

One problem I have faced since Ciarans programmes have gone is trying to get music played by him over the air. Much of this music was never produced on a commercial scale and hence there is the danger that it could be lost forever. Recently I have tried in vain to obtain recordings made by the Moylan family from the Kinvara area of Clare/Galway. Ciaran often played their music on his Sunday morning programme and they were a joy to listen to. Roisin Moylan had a superbly sweet voice and two songs she sang were particular favourites of mine--(1) "THE LITTLE STREAMS OF DOONEY and (2) "THE OLD PLAID SHAWL" Her father Eugene (sadly now deceased ) accompanied her splendidly on Piano Accordion. No doubt Ciaran might still have these recordings, but it would not be in good taste for one to bother him for these in his retirement. I have even tried the National Musical Archives in Dublin for the Music of the Moylans but there was much Protocol there trying to get what I wanted. E-mailing them seemed also to be Taboo. Letters only was their request, and though thankfully they responded to my letter,a route for me to obtain what I wanted was not made particularly clear. Now somewhat frustrated, I can only hope R.T.E.radio might be able to help sometime. The wheels though, are slow-turning. Apparently much of the programmes and their content are not in their hands so it goes back to Ciaran again perhaps for a solution. Peter Browne of RTE radio has been most helpul to me in all my enquiries there.

Many tributes have been paid to Ciaran over the years and he used to say humourously, that though he was never a Singer, Musician, or Dancer, this proved to be an asset for him getting the job as a collector of Folklore and Music on R.T.E.radio over all the long years. I can only conclude by wishing him many thanks for all those years of Labour and a hope that his retirement will be an enjoyalble one to himself Dolly and the family circle, and "May the Lark in the clear air" forever sound. Have changed the length of the programme as it used to begin at 8:12 a.m. and finish at 8:58. There were also sometimes similar programmes by MacMathuna on Christmas Day.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 14:54, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
