Trial

[edit]

Nugent was convicted by a jury.Shtove 12:20, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

For future ref - long, partisan account of the trial at BM Add. MS 4793 ff.127-140: "A discourse touching the proceedings upon the triall and executing of Mr Nicholas Nugent chief justice of the common pleas" (1582) - describes it as an "extorted verdit", because both Dillon judges browbeat the jurors during deliberation (called chaunting). Not printed or digitised AFAIK. Shtove 19:39, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
Colm Lennon has a good biog of Nugent, with this reference, at modern DNB: http://www.oxforddnb.com/templates/article.jsp?articleid=20393&back=&version=2004-09.-Shtove
