Rej Sonja of Rogatino and Angelica Bridges

[edit]

Note that Red Sonya of Rogatino has appeared in Savage Sword of Conan #229 and around #223, where Red Sonja saw her in the mirrors of Tuzun Thune.

Angelica Bridges also played Red Sonja. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Enda80 (talkcontribs) 12:11, 29 November 2005

Conan and Sonja

[edit]

It says she would never bed another man unless he defeated her in combat. I can't imagine she'd have a chance against him in fair combat, he'd be so much stronger. So did that happen, and did Conan land her?

Over the course of her career, Sonja has fought many men (sometimes several at once) who were bigger and stronger than even Conan, and in each case she defeated them. Conan's size and strength would not necessarily predispose him to winning, as these have from time to time led him to jump hastily into some situations that were later regrettable. Whereas men typically use brute strength to win these sorts of battles, Sonja is more skilled and methodical. -- Myrddin7, 7/28/08
Anyone else ever read novelist/comic book writer Peter David's analysis of Red Sonja's famous oath to never have sex unless its with a man who defeats her? He likens it to saying "I will never have sex unless its with a man who can recreate the circumstances of my rape, during which I was helpless before a physically superior man" and that a kind, caring man (David actually uses the phrase "the kind of man who could help heal her fractured psyche and give her back a normal life") is thus never even in the running.
He also suggested that Red Sonja needs some seriously deep psychological counseling.
With respect to Peter David, I don't think he quite understands her oath. He likens it to a man defeating her in battle and then essentially forcing himself on her, implying that she would resist having sex. Rather, I believe her oath implies that if a man can best her in fair combat, she would willingly submit herself to him without the need of him forcing her. - Myrddin7, 7/28/08 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.64.39.28 (talk) 19:42, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, because willfully submitting to a potential rapist is so much better than having him beat you down first... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.84.26.82 (talk) 06:42, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To my knowledge,no,Conan never had her. One of the comics mentioned something about "niether wanting to win nor lose". Spartan198 (talk) 14:10, 21 May 2008 (UTC) Spartan198[reply]

Conan defeated Red Sonja in combat in the Marvel comic Conan #115, and she was willing to sleep with him, but he turned her down because he was still in love with Belit, who had died a year earlier. MightyAtom (talk) 19:33, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Variant covers

[edit]

I removed the variant covers for the following reasons: A) They're all covers of #1, but add nothing. Therefore, the primary version is more easily justifiable. B) They clutter the page, making for uncomfortable formatting and aesthetics. C) It's hardly justifiable as fair use, considering they all depict the same character. --Kusonaga 10:39, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm?

[edit]

Much of this entry (take a look at the 'parody' for example) seems to be lifted from here: http://www.redsonja.net/htmlfiles/history.html . Or was it the other way around..?

Surprisingly, it WAS the other way around! In fact, just about the entire article is taken from Wikipedia's "Red Sonja" page! Check the bottom of red sonja.net's page. It says "Source: Wikipedia.com"!

Celtic legend

[edit]

Apparently this character was based on the Celtic legend Ifay (sp?), can anyone confirm this? Chris 18:43, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No,Red Sonja was based on REH's original Red Sonya of Rogantino. Spartan198 (talk) 14:10, 21 May 2008 (UTC) Spartan198[reply]

Only six books?

[edit]

The article says that only six novels exist. But I once saw a Red Sonja book in a book store, the name can be translated as 'Red Sonja and the Pantry of Darkness'(Alas,I do not remember the author's name). Can anybody explain such a phenomenon?Dimts 07:59, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Marvelteamup79.jpg

[edit]

Image:Marvelteamup79.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Powers and abilities?

[edit]

Shouldn't there be an Powers and abilities topic in this article? I'd write it myself but I haven't read enough Red Sonja. For example does she have actual super-strength or is she "only" in peak human condition like Conan? --Hophi (talk) 00:40, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No,Sonja has no powers or anything. Just peak human condition, like you said. Spartan198 (talk) 14:12, 21 May 2008 (UTC) Spartan198[reply]

Depends on the writer. Jordie Bellaire’s version in the Vampirella/Red Sonja series was strong enough to punch through a stone wall and seemingly matched Vampirella in strength. In the Sonjaversal series, Sonja is similarly stated to have superhuman strength and endurance Conradknightsocks (talk) 21:17, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Rumor and theory

Red Sonja (2009 film)

Red Sonja & Spider-Man

Should the article mentioned that Red Sonja teamed up with Spider-Man twice?

Gail Simone run (2013)

[edit]

Wow, I'm surprised that with Gail Simone's internet-savvy fans, nobody had added this yet! Luckily I had JUST finished reading up on it, so I was able to add some sources. I don't know if they're the best of all possible sources in terms of what Wiki prefers (I haven't edited terribly many comics articles before), but I know that at least the basic info (early positive review, the fact that she's writing it at all, etc.) is correct. For one thing, we have at least double confirmation that she's doing it: she also promoted it during her appearance at Florida's MegaCon this year (which I was in attendance for) - and her panel, during which she mentioned it, was recorded for some kind of podcast, so if you can find that, you won't even have to take my word for it ;)

I couldn't find a better place to put it and since it's a very small amount of information as well as the most recent, I figured that absent a reorganization of the page, the end of the intro was the best place for it for now. If we get further details, I suppose it could be expanded. 68.202.85.105 (talk) 19:56, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Character in Cerebus The Aardvark?

Red Sophia from Cerebus_the_Aardvark -- does she deserve a mention here? 2605:A601:46C:4101:CABC:C8FF:FEA5:82F4 (talk) 12:11, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Bikini Section

[edit]

Why no mention that this costume is absurdly silly and very impractical for a fighter? Also not mentioned that this costume is popular because of its targeted audience. Ileanadu (talk) 15:46, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Probably because the current run has her wearing far more practical clothes (apart from the book covers) - the whole section needs scraping or updating. 5.66.243.185 (talk) 17:24, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Why no mention that Conan's costume is absurdly silly? Or John Carter's, He-Man's, or any other male warriors who fight wearing nothing but a harness and loincloth? Also not mentioned is why their costumes are equally popular. 2601:8:3580:968:1C61:A576:D0B7:2242 (talk) 21:01, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Based on" Howard's Red Sonja?

[edit]

Sure, it's "based on" Howard's Sonja in the same way that Marvel's Conan is "based on" Howard's Conan and their Kull is "based on" Howard's Kull.

Since when were uncreative writers like Thomas permitted to claim credit for the ideas of genuinely creative writers? Has plagiarising the work of the dead become an acceptable practice? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Themwallace (talkcontribs) 22:31, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas didn't create Red Sonja 100% ,nor was he the sole participant when adapting Howard's original creations. He adapted partially Sony of Rogatino and Agnes de Chatillon for the origins story, also replacing the events in the Hyborian Age during Conan's lifetime, then wrote stories for Marvel Comics featuring this exclusive spinoff "Sonja" with a J character more or less from scratch , I mean do some research before posting idiotic comments on wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.82.152.110 (talk) 02:34, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The inspiration quotes in this article have long been wrong. Dark Agnes was not involved at all; she just had red hair and a temper. The addition was original research in 2008 in this edit: Special:Diff/220394408. Then someone tried to source it to the Conan afterword here: Special:Diff/243831354. I read it, and that afterword does not mention Dark Agnes at all. Thomas has written other notes with similar stories, none of which include Agnes or Valeria. It also makes no sense to claim inspiration from Valeria when they just used Valeria herself in the comics... Bleeding Cool did a good job of quoting Thomas's stories here and here, and a good write up was done here at Tor. Time to remove this misleading information before it propagates further with recent movie news. -2pou (talk) 20:18, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Character biography

[edit]

There isn't one. I realise that too much "in-universe" stuff is the bane of articles about fictional characters, but it's a bit weird that the only section that's at all about Sonja as a character, rather than purely bibliographic information, is the one headed "Sexuality". Even more weirdly, there doesn't seem to be an equivalent section on Conan's page, for some reason. 92.30.134.89 (talk) 19:29, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
