Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/American football

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Gonzo fan2007 (talk | contribs) at 14:25, 20 June 2024 (Listing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Chicago Bears all-time record versus NFL.). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to American football. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|American football|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to American football. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

List of Chicago Bears all-time record versus NFL (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Wikipedia is not a sports database. This level of detail runs afoul of WP:NOTSTATS, while also not meeting basic notability standards for lists. A higher level summary (i.e. the first table under All-Time Series) may be appropriate for merging, maybe into List of Chicago Bears team records, but this does not justify a standalone list. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 14:25, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Adding that I would support a selective merge to List of Chicago Bears team records on the condition that the list of Thursday/Sunday/Monday night games and holiday games are not included in such a merge. Frank Anchor 17:25, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Non-notable and poorly sourced BLP. The present sources barely mention him or are gossip about his wedding. Ditto any search. Fails WP:GNG, WP:GOSSIP, and WP:V. — Iadmctalk  04:20, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

They don't appear to be a notable team, playing in a small, regional league. No sourced info so not sure it is worth merging anywhere. Potentially a redirect to university or league. Boleyn (talk) 16:41, 16 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This was soft deleted earlier this year and recreated, however the previous rationale for deleting this article remains, in that there is a lack of WP:SIGCOV from reliable secondary sources to meet the WP:NRIVALRY or WP:GNG. Don't think this qualifies for a speedy deletion, so bringing it to AfD. Let'srun (talk) 20:17, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is no requirement that a Wikipedia article on the history of competition between two teams must be a capital-"R" RIVALRY. An article can be written about a series or a trophy, assuming it meets GNG and the significant coverage goes beyond WP:ROUTINE recaps of the games, which the sources above do. PK-WIKI (talk) 19:42, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
These references all basically explain that the trophy is awarded to the winner of the game, surrounded by other WP:ROUTINE coverage (such as a pre/postgame report or a list of other traveling trophies). It does nothing to describe a rivalry between the two teams, and a traveling trophy is not inherently notable. In addition, if the article is kept, which I oppose, I believe the name should stay as is; articles about other college football games played for a traveling trophy are named "X-Y rivalry" and not after the trophy. Frank Anchor 20:18, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The references don't need to describe a rivalry between the teams, as there is no requirement that teams must be "rivals" to write a Wikipedia article about their notable series or trophy. The references above do provide significant, non-routine coverage of the trophy and series, making this article an easy keep under the name Governor's Victory Bell.
There are plenty of series listed at List of NCAA college football rivalry games where the article takes the name of the trophy, such as Wagon Wheel (trophy), Governor's Cup (Kentucky), Jefferson-Eppes Trophy, Gansz Trophy, Victory Bell (Cincinnati–Miami), etc. Those are far better names than "...football series" in my opinion, in cases such as this where "...football rivalry" is perhaps inappropriate or "not a true rivalry".
PK-WIKI (talk) 20:49, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Still a non-notable series. The presence of a traveling trophy and the routine coverage you mentioned earlier does not change that. Frank Anchor 01:15, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result was merge‎ to NCAA Division III independent schools. After discounting the WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS-type arguments, we're left with a clear consensus to delete. However, the proposed selective merge target seems like a reasonable ATD. Owen× 10:46, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

List of NCAA Division III independents football records (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Topic is not notable enough for a standalone article, fails WP:NLIST and WP:NOTDIRECTORY. This is a list of records for loosely-related college football team seasons. These teams are "independent" and do not belong to conferences, only joined together because they are in a division of college football together. The text in many of these templates also show up as wikitext because of improper code writing. This list was also created as a way to try avoiding deletion of the individual templates at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2024 June 13#Template:2023 NCAA Division III independents football records. Very minimal significant coverage from reliable sources; majority of sources are from a suspected fan site. Could not find recent coverage in a WP:BEFORE. Fails WP:GNG. Jalen Folf (Bark[s]) 15:58, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose There's only one link to a Facebook page, the others are to a local newspaper while the others are to a very reliable site, which is in use for most minor league articles. This league is equivalent to the National League (division) in England (without the history). There's absolutely no reason to delete this article. Oppose I don't see any reason for deletion. This is a pro league, and the article is well sited. StanleyKey (talk) 00:41, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The problem I see here is I don't see any other source besides OurSportsCentral, Muskegon Sports, and local team sources. I'm expecting more than just those sources here. Jalen Folf (Bark[s]) 21:32, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose It's clearly a minor league and Our Sports Central is as good of a source you can get for leagues below the Major level. BabyBOY789 (talk) 21:06, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, there's Muskegon Sports for West Michigan Ironmen coverage, but what about coverage for the other teams? Jalen Folf (Bark[s]) 21:33, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete: The league is not notable at all and there is no news articles on it except for small town news. Blake675 (talk) 23:52, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Merge with West Michigan Ironmen since the league is inextricably tied to that team and what reliable sources are available for it are in the context of that team. J. Myrle Fuller (talk) 22:30, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete The "oursportscentral" article is a rather typical "new job announcement" and doesn't do much to support GNG. The Vancouver Sun 2004 article is a single sentence. The Rotman article is not independent, it's one of those alumnus blurbs. While it might provide some facts it is a good bet that they come directly from the subject. The only possible significant article I see is the Vancouver Sun 2005 one. It talks about the subject as beginning a career, and given that was in 2005 I would expect to have seen later articles about a career, but I don't. Lamona (talk) 22:07, 12 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
