Main Characters
Littlefoot
Littlefoot is an Apatosaurus but is called a Longneck in the films. He is the central character of the film The Land Before Time and most of its sequels; however it is not always necessarily the largest role. He is contemplative and quiet, though he enjoys playing, and often becomes leader in any quest.
Cera
Cera is a Triceratops (in the film called a "Threehorn") and a friend of Littlefoot.
Cera is a bossy dinosaur who tries to show no fear. She is prone to bragging about her accomplishments, but will run away at the first sign of any real danger. She is very sweet and caring; but that side of her personality is usually masked by her normally gruff exterior.
Ducky
Ducky is a Parasaurolophus, which is also called a "Bigmouth" or a "Swimmer". She tends to say "Yep yep yep" quite a lot, which is frequently quoted today in popular culture and everyday life. Ducky rarely speaks in contractions, except when singing, and is almost never heard to utter a generalization.
Petrie
Petrie is a pterosaur (a Pteranodon to be exact), also called a "Flyer". He is talkative, but (uniquely to himself) speaks in a form of broken English.
Spike
Spike is, as his name implies, a 'Spiketail' (Stegosaurus).
He is one of the youngest members of the group, Chomper being the only major character younger than himself. Ducky witnessed his hatching. Ducky's mother adopted him upon their reaching the Great Valley, as his family has yet to be seen. A Stegosaurus family did offer to take him with them, although he decided to stay with Ducky. Spike rarely speaks, though he has been known to vocalize in songs. The one notable occasion of Spike's use of speech appeared in The Land Before Time IV: Journey Through the Mists.
Chomper
Chomper is a Tyrannosaurus, which is known as a sharptooth in the Land Before Time movies. He is bilingual, being able to speak both the herbivore language of Littlefoot and his friends (heard as English to the viewer), and the "Sharptooth" of language of Tyrannosaurus, which seems to consist of grunts, roars, and clicks.
Ruby
Ruby is a new friend of Littlefoot and his friends and appears in the television series. She is a female Oviraptor. Ruby is quite compassionate.
Parents, Foster Parents, Relatives and Adoptees
Bron
Bron is an Apatosaurus, the father of Littlefoot . He was separated from Littlefoot, the latter's mother, and Grandpa and Grandma Longneck shortly before Littlefoot's birth. Until The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration, Bron was unsure of his wife and son's fates. Bron also has an adopted son named Shorty. Bron is voiced by Kiefer Sutherland in The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration and Cam Clarke in the TV series.
In Part X, Littlefoot and his grandparents are moved by a sudden urge to migrate to an unknown place; when they arrive, they find hundreds of other longnecks. One of them was Bron, who recognizes Grandpa Longneck. Littlefoot meets his father for the first time. Littlefoot thought Bron had abandoned him and his mother, and thus he retreated into seclusion. Bron caught up with him, and explains how they had become separated. Littlefoot accepts this and the two bond, much to the displeasure of Shorty, Littlefoot's foster brother. Shorty and Littlefoot made amends when they were forced to work together to save themselves from attacking Sharpteeth. Despite the brevity of their acquaintance, Littlefoot and Bron know where both of them belong and depart, promising each other they would see each other again.
Bron has since appeared in the TV series episode "The Big Longneck Test", although he mentions that he has visited Littlefoot a few times before this.
Cera's Siblings
Topsy, Cera's belligerent father, and his first wife were seen to have several children on at least two occasions. The first time can only be inferred; the existence of Dinah and Dana--Cera's niece and nephew and Topsy's grandchildren-- implies that Topsy and his wife had to have had at least one son or daughter before Cera's egg laying. The fate thereof remains unknown.
Cera is seen to have had nestmate siblings at her hatching; they seem to be mostly sisters. They, along with their mother, have mostly disappeared from the film series and are likely dead, having died on the way to the Great Valley. Two of them, however, appear in volume three. She now has a half sister, Tricia, due to her step-mother Tria.
Chomper's Parents
These figures have only appeared in The Land Before Time II: The Great Valley Adventure and The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island. They are both green in color, but the mother and father are distinguished by exact shade, with the father being much darker (this may reflect a gender difference). Although they are ferocious predators like the other Sharpteeth, they are also devoted parents. It is suggested in the series that they requested Ruby as some sort of babysitter for Chomper. Both Ruby and Chomper were separated from their families by Red Claw and his minions; so far they have yet to reunite. They also stand as the only adult Sharpteeth who have not directly tried to injure the protagonists in any way.
Dinah and Dana
Dinah and Dana are infant Triceratops twins. They are Cera's niece and nephew. They first appeared in The Land Before Time VI: The Secret of Saurus Rock and have not been seen in the further sequels. They speak in a baby-talk that is unintelligible to the impatient Cera, but intelligible to others including their grandfather Topsy.
Ducky and Spike's Father
He is rarely seen but has appeared now and again, for example in the background The Land Before Time VIII: The Big Freeze. It is sometimes asked whether this is due to how Ducky's original voice actress, Judith Barsi, was murdered by her own father, according to Internet Movie Database.
Ducky and Spike's Mother
Known as Mama Swimmer by fans, Ducky and Spike's mother is a Parasaurolophus and has appeared in most of the 12 movies that have debuted so far. She is blind to race, as seen in her inter-racial/species adoption of Spike, a Stegosaurus. She loves all her children and is very attentive. She is popular among Littlefoot and his friends for these reasons and is treated with respect by Littlefoot and his friends, as well as the adults in the Great Valley. She occasionally has doubts on how to raise Spike, whether in keeping with her own values or with those of his racial heritage. This was seen in The Land Before Time VIII: The Big Freeze when a stegosaur herd met and befriended Spike. She let him go with the herd to learn "his kind's" ways; however when Spike fell through ice it was she who rescued her grateful son.
This protective attitude is scientifically accurate, as at least some hadrosaurids such as Maiasaura, or "good mother lizard," are believed to have been attentive parents. Curiously, unlike other young dinosaurs in the film, her daughter, Ducky, is shown as being able to walk and even talk soon after hatching, while the evidence for hadrosaur parental care rests in the fact that young were unable to care for themselves.
Ducky and Spike's Brothers and Sisters
There are at least 14 young swimmers (male and female). Although they look much like Ducky, they lack her sense of adventure, preferring to stay at home with their Mother. Ever since Ducky introduced them to "our new brother, Spike" at the close of the first film, all the swimmers have happily accepted him as part of the family, even if they do not understand him as well as Ducky does. The total 14 came in two clutches, as in the first film; Ducky's nest contained about half a dozen eggs. Later, in the Great Valley Adventure, Ducky's parents are shown to have another nest, with about another half dozen or so. The film ended with the new clutch hatching.
Grandpa and Grandma Longneck
Grandpa and Grandma Longneck are Littlefoot's grandparents and his primary caregivers after his mother died. They act as parents to Littlefoot, giving him advice when needed and take their responsibility of protecting Littlefoot very seriously. Their real names have yet to be revealed; nearly everyone calls them Grandpa and Grandma, including each other. Topsy calls Littlefoot's grandfather "Longneck", whereas Bron, Littlefoot's father, calls him "Poppa Longneck."
They provide a voice of reason in the Great Valley, trying to make peace between the dinosaurs when times become hard. Detailed analysis of the film series shows that Littlefoot's grandfather has assumed a leadership position among the dinosaurs of the Valley, welcoming visitors and newcomers (The Land Before Time IV: Journey Through the Mists and The Land Before Time VI: The Secret of Saurus Rock), passing judgement on criminals (The Land Before Time VII: The Stone of Cold Fire), deciding a course of action for the herds of the Valley (The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island) managing natural resources such as water (The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island), and providing for the common defense in times of danger (The Land Before Time II: The Great Valley Adventure).
Grandpa Longneck is also shown to be a very loving husband to his wife (a song from part IV indicates that institutionalized marriage does exist in the Land Before Time universe) and a kindly grandfather-figure not only to Littlefoot but to all the young dinosaurs of the Valley. He, in fact, has been known to tell children stories in the evenings, usually near a geothermal heat-vent. It can therefore be assumed that he was good father to his late daughter, Littlefoot's mother. He also gets along well with Bron, his suggested son-in-law. However, while is mostly free of the bigotry that characterizes some other dinosaurs, he has a prejudiced view of sharptooth dinosaurs. He sees them as "not very smart"; however, it is a considerably less severe condemnation than that of his son-in-law, who despises them as cowards.
As seen in Land Before Time, after being separated from Littlefoot, his grandparents gave up hope of ever seeing either him or their daughter again and went searching for the Valley. On the way, they met other dinosaurs who joined their search for the Valley as well, not unlike how their children also found and joined each other. It is likely at this time that he was formally introduced to Topsy and assumed the leadership of the combined herds. As of the moment, Grandpa and Grandma Longneck live happily in the Great Valley, though they occasionally meet with relatives as in the Part IV or leave and coincidentally meet with other longnecks as in Part X.
Grandpa Longneck has been shown to be rather undecided in his beliefs. This is quite unlike his daughter who stated that "somethings [...] you see with your heart" and whose ghost in the first films shows that the "supermundane" does indeed exist in their world. In The Secret of Saurus Rock he tells the children legends of heroic dinosaurs and of the mystical Saurus Rock that protects the Valley, but when asked whether the stories are really true, claims not to know. However, during The Great Migration he intuitively knows that he must go and that he must re-enact the longneck creation myth. Littlefoot has under markings identical to those of Grandma Longneck, unlike his mother who bore her suggested father Grandpa Longneck's under markings.
Grandpa Longneck's health appears to be frailer than those of his family, though both he and his wife weaken as they age.
Grandpa and Grandma Longneck have appeared in all The Land Before Time films.
Littlefoot's Mother
Appearing only in the original The Land Before Time, Littlefoot's Mother was shown to be a very loving mother to her only living son. She got along well with her parents and loved her husband Bron very much, naming their son after him; "Littlefoot" having been Bron's nickname as a child. She led the herd in search of the Great Valley. At the time of her son's birth, the land was suffering geologic and ecologic upheavals that included but were not limited to drought, flooding, famine, predation, and earthquakes. Determined that her son not grow up in such an environment, she led her herd in search of the Great Valley "a wonderful, beautiful place" with green food, "more than you could ever eat, and with more fresh, cool water than you could ever drink." She had no proof that the Great Valley even existed, but was guided by her belief that "some things you see with your eyes [while] others you see with your heart."
The canonical, Bambi-like death of the parent occurred when, late one night near dawn, she died protecting Littlefoot and Cera from Sharptooth. She put up a tremendous fight and cast him into the "big underground," the bottom of a Grand Canyon-like gorge that had just been torn open by a tremendous earthquake. However, Sharptooth was not dead, and even this fleeting victory cost Littlefoot's mother her life, as Sharptooth had bit a large chunk of flesh out of her back and gashed her neck in their fight (implying that she may have died from blood loss). With her last breath, she told her son to search for the Great Valley and that she would be with him. Later, her ghost would appear to her son in times of need and aid him in the quest for the Great Valley. Her last appearance was at the end of the first film when Littlefoot despaired of ever finding the Great Valley; she took to the form of a longnecked cloud to guide him into the Great Valley, whereupon a beam of light came from her heart. The light shone on Littlefoot and spread to illuminate the Great Valley below.
Though long since dead, she is periodically mentioned through the film series and may have made an appearance in The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island. Littlefoot remembers his mother and looks at a star shining brighter than the others. Littlefoot also wished his mother had given him a brother in The Land Before Time IX: Journey to Big Water. She also made an appearance in a flashback in The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration. In this film, she is seen blue-ish, and looks more like Grandma and Grandpa, though in the first movie The Land Before Time, she is seen brown like Bron.
She was one of the wisest and most enlightened of all the dinosaurs (Although not quite to the extent of her son); however she tends to accept the fact that a lot of the dinosaur herds tended to be segregated. Even she does not understand why this is so; all she can tell her son is that "it's always been that way." When the only other child around at that time- Cera- is not allowed to play with Littlefoot because he is a longneck and Cera a threehorn, Littlefoot's mother comforts him by telling him that in the Great Valley "there will be many, many longnecks for you to play with". However, the fact that she saved both Littlefoot and Cera from Sharptooth shows that she was willing to abandon racial taboos. Her true name is unknown. She is often referred to as simply Littlefoot's Mother and sometimes Mama Longneck. She is likely Grandpa and Grandma Longneck's daughter, as her husband refers to Grandpa Longneck as "Papa Longneck" instead of "father". She has the same under markings as her suggested father.
Petrie's Mother
Known as Mama Flyer by fans, Petrie's mother has a big heart toward all the young ones and is protective of her children. She once offered comfort to Ducky's mother when the latter was abducted by Pterano and his cronies. Although she believes her brother would never intentionally hurt anyone, she is quite severe on Pterano, and makes it clear that she does not trust him. She plays the major role in the Great Day Of The Flyers
Petrie's Brothers and Sisters
They had brief appearances in I-XI. They have a bigger part in The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers.
However, the number of brothers and sisters Petrie has seems to change between films.
They are voiced by Jeff Bennett (who voices Petrie), Nika Futterman, and Susan Blu.
Pterano
Pterano is Petrie's long lost uncle, voiced by Michael York. While idolized by his nephews and nieces, namely Petrie, he is not trusted by his sister (Petrie's mother), nor by Littlefoot, Cera, Grandpa Longneck, or Topsy. The reason for such suspicion is seen in how, after the combined herds joined under Grandpa Longneck in search of the Great Valley, Pterano promised one faction an easy way to the Valley and, due to his incompetent leadership, blundered them into a sharptooth ambush that only he survived. After reuniting with his sister in the Great Valley, he, along with his henchmen Rinkus (a Rhamphorhynchus) and Sierra (a Cearadactylus), began searching for the Stone of Cold Fire, a comet which he thinks will grant him magic power. He fails and winds up putting Petrie and the other children in danger, but saves them at the end. Rewarding the rescue, Grandpa Longneck exiles Pterano for a [reduced] period of 5 cold times (winters/years).
Pterano is at first shown to be proud and cold, though less aggressive than his comrades Rinkus and Sierra. However, he shows his softer side throughout the film as he scolds his companions for continuously acting violently toward the young dinos; feeling remorse when he believed Ducky had fallen through a hole to her death; taking responsibility for the action instead of blaming his henchmen (a sign, perhaps, of maturity); ordering the sidekicks to leave the young ones alone after Sierra had recaptured Ducky; refusing Sierra's idea to feed the children to the sharpteeth once the trio had "taken over"; and personally saving Ducky from a fatal fall off the mountaintop. In the end, he shows his softer side as he says goodbye to Petrie and tells him he will miss him.
Pterano appears in The Land Before Time VII: The Stone of Cold Fire and has not been seen since. However, in The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration a lone pterosaur resembling Pterano is seen when Littlefoot and his grandparents leave the valley. He is sometimes mentioned in the TV series.
Ruby's Parents
They appeared in "The Star Day Celebration" and "Return to Hanging Rock"
They have wrinkles, implying age. The Mother is pink and the Father is blue. The Father also has an elderly-like voice.

They appeared in "The Star Day Celebration" and "Return to Hanging Rock"
There are two; one is a blue color, and the other is pink.
Shorty
A dark green Brachiosaurus, who appeared in The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration. In Bron's backstory, Shorty was found wandering in the wilderness with eight or so orange Brachiosaurus hatchlings. Since he was the eldest of the small herd, he is shown in the flashback to be very protective of the hatchlings. Shorty, along with the hatchlings, followed Bron.
In the crater, Shorty and Littlefoot fail to co-exist peacefully until near the end of the movie, when Littlefoot stopped him from leaving the area alone Littlefoot proposed the two could be brothers, which made Shorty happier and less jealous of Littlefoot. In the end, he gets on well with Littlefoot's friends. Bron finally adopts him after Littlefoot tells Bron to take care of Shorty, officially making him Littlefoot's stepbrother.
Shorty is the young bully of the film, since he had a nasty past and was the only one from that small herd that was not adopted until the end of the film. He was antisocial, mostly wandering by himself and picking on other young dinosaurs, including Littlefoot. His name is ironic in that "Shorty" is a playground insult; he is also shorter than Littlefoot even though he is clearly older than him.
Shorty appeared with Bron in the TV series episode "The Big Longneck Test". He was voiced by Brandon De Paul in the film, and Elizabeth Daily in the TV series.
Topsy
Topsy is a Triceratops, the father of Cera. For many films, his true name was unknown; he was credited as "Daddy Topps" in the first film and "Cera's Dad" in the first ten sequels. Most of his peers called him "Threehorn", while Grandpa and Grandma Longneck would call him "my friend" or "Mister Three-Horn". There has been some argument over whether or not "Topsy" is his real name and not a pet name given him by Tria. This is seen in how Cera was visibly angered when Ducky called him by it. Even so, it is assumed that Topsy is indeed his real name.
His personality was unknown in the first film, but he was shown to be guilty of racism, or speciesism. He is seen growling at Littlefoot (whom he sees as a bad influence on Cera) and telling him that "Threehorns never play with longnecks." He was often portrayed as pompous, self-righteous, and bigoted; the degree of his pride and perverse stubbornness was seen in The Land Before Time III: The Time of the Great Giving when he took Cera straight into a wildfire rather than go with the other dinosaurs. He is aware of his bad attitude, but, in the beginning at least, thought nothing of it, saying that even if he was thought mean, he had a family to protect and he would do that by any means necessary. In a song from The Time of the Great Giving he says that was inculcated with this attitude by his own father, who told him to "stand and fight, don't run away." In recent films, he has still been shown stern and less understanding than Grandpa Longneck; but his prejudice and bad attitude have gradually lessened through the many sequels.
There is also the question of where Topsy's wife is - indeed, the film The Land Before Time XI: Invasion of the Tinysauruses, shows him happily courting Tria; Littlefoot was shown asking if she would be Cera's new mother. Topsy's earlier mate was shown near the start of The Land Before Time as were their other children. However, when he and Cera were reunited at the end of the film, some of the other children were gone; his wife as well as the other featured children disappearing afterwards as the result of an accidental retcon. Given the fatalistic attitude of the first film (the narrator having stated that "Sharpteeth stalked the herds waiting to seize any who strayed") it is likely they died on the way to the Great Valley. However, as seen by the presence of Topsy's grandchildren, Dinah and Dana, in The Land Before Time VI: The Secret of Saurus Rock, at least one of his children, unnamed and likely from before Cera's egg-laying, is alive. After Invasion of the Tinysauruses, Topsy and Tria have another daughter, Tricia.
In recent films, he has been shown to be part of the Great Valley's leadership, sharing power with Littlefoot's grandfather. Though Topsy and Littlefoot's family met early in the first film, it is assumed that he and Grandpa Longneck were formally introduced to each other and decided to assume shared leadership of the combined herds after they were separated from their children in the great earthquake. This was shown in a flashback in The Stone of Cold Fire.
Topsy is portrayed by Burke Byrnes in The Land Before Time and John Ingle in all of the sequels, except The Land Before Time IV: Journey Through the Mists, where he never made an appearance.
Tria
Tria is a pink "Threehorn" (Triceratops). She is kind, loving and brave, though her character may seem rather false and unconvincing at first. It is revealed in The Land Before Time XI: Invasion of the Tinysauruses that she and Topsy (Cera's dad) met when they were younger, and are reunited in the film, much to the dismay of Cera, who is very used to being the center of her father's attention. Despite some false starts, however, Cera and her new stepmother do manage to get along in the end. Unlike Topsy, Tria immediately finds the Tinysauruses cute when she comes across a wandering pair, which is why she separates from him for a short time. Tria and Topsy have a child in The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers.
She is portrayed by Camryn Manheim in the eleventh and twelfth films and Jessica Gee in the TV series and the thirteenth film.
Tricia
Tricia is a young dark pink Triceratops. She is the daughter of Tria and Topsy and the half-sister of Cera. Her first appearance is in The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers. Due to the fact that Tricia is a baby Triceratops, she does not have any teeth yet. She is also known to be a better swimmer than Cera.
She is voiced by Nika Futterman in The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers and Meghan Strange (who voices Ruby) in The Land Before Time TV series.
Residents of the Great Valley
Big Daddy
The leader of the Tinysauruses. He is the voice of authority, is over-protective, and thinks he is the biggest of the Tinysaurus herd. He has been met with much derision from his daughters. His name is doubly ironic, considering he is short even for a Tinysaurus, being dwarfed by his own daughter.

Guido
Guido is a Microraptor gui who appears in The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers. Although rumored to be multicolored, his feathers are, in actuality, presented in warm shades of green and yellow, mostly Jade. He has never seen another creature like himself. He is more of a comic relief character than previous guest characters. He is voiced by Rob Paulsen. He also appeared in the TV series episode were he truly learns how to fly (The Hermit of Black Rock).
Hyp
The leader of the trio of bullying dinosaurs in The Land Before Time III: The Time of the Great Giving, who tried to cause trouble for Littlefoot and his friends. Hyp, along with his other friends Mutt and Nod, often hides his cowardliness to make him look braver, or "bigger". Eventually, Hyp and his friends help Littlefoot and his friends with helping their parents deal with a pack of Sharpteeth, and later find some food to share with others. His name may derive from the ornithopod Hypsilophodon. The trio has not appeared since in the further sequels, although they have appeared in an episode of the TV series. Whit Hetford voiced Hyp.
Hyp's Father
An often grumpy dinosaur, who yells at his son when concerned for his safety. Like his son, his attitude may have an effect on others, including Topsy, who realises the errors of his ways on raising his daughter, Cera, after witnessing Hyp's father telling off his son with the exact same words Topsy used with Cera ("I'm your father, and I know what's best for you!"). Hyp's father is not cowardly and he is not always angry; he can also be kind to others, as shown at the end of the film. In Film V he can be seen when the dinosaurs are leaving the valley.
Kosh
Kosh is the gluttonous Ankylosaurus appearing in some of the The Land Before Time films and "The Star Day Celebration" episode of the TV series. His name is revealed in the end credits for "The Star Day Celebration" episode of the TV series, whereas he was once referred as "Mr. Clubtail" in some films.
He shows up commonly in the series, usually for one-liners, and most often for comic relief. He is almost always seen eating. While he initially refuses to share sweet bubbles with the kids, he changes his mind when Ducky tells him it is for Ruby's Star Day.
He was voiced by Rob Paulsen in The Land Before Time III: The Time of the Great Giving, The Land Before Time XI: Invasion of the Tinysauruses, and The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers, Jeff Bennett in The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island, and Peter Sepenuk, who also voices Red Claw and Screech, in the TV series.
Lizzie
Lizzie was one of the Tinysauruses Littlefoot and friends met in Invasion of the Tinysauruses. A daughter of Big Daddy, she was fed up with her father's over-protectiveness and distrust of Littlefoot and his friends, similar to Cera's situation with her father, Topsy. Lizzie and Cera quickly became friends and made amends with their fathers. Voiced by Cree Summer.
Milo, Lydia, and Plower
Three beaver-like mammals, featured in Stranger from the Mysterious Above. They believed Spike to be "The Big Wise One". Milo was voiced by Jeff Bennett, Plower by Rob Paulsen, and Lydia by Nika Futterman.
Mutt
One of the bullying trio, he is dim-witted and more dependent on his friends. Because he is not clever, he is more of a coward than Hyp or Nod. He usually needs a nudge from Nod in order to know when to speak. He is a Muttaburrasaurus , hence his name. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
Mutt's Father
He can be seen briefly in the fight against some Velociraptors. Like his son, he is controlled by fear.
Nod
Another of Hyp's friends, a Nodosaurus. Nod was the depressed one of the group. He tried to be funny, but none of the others liked him. He often repeated what he said to make more sense, or tried feebly to emphasize a case made by Hyp. Scott Menville voiced Nod.
Pat
An old but not always wise Apatosaurus, who offered to look after Littlefoot's friends on their way to the crater in The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration. When they realise they cannot make the journey by themselves, Pat finally looks after them. His leg was severely burned from erupting lava after telling the longneck creation myth to the gang; they help Pat get up. When they arrive at the crater, he helps defend the other children against three sharpteeth. At the end of the movie, the children ask him to come with them to the Great Valley, which he slowly accepts.
Pat is shown to be a lonely traveller, as he offers twice to look after Littlefoot's friends, takes a different route to the crater, and does not travel with a sauropod herd. He is gentle, but because of his age he is physically weak. He was voiced by James Garner and has not appeared since in the further sequels.
Rocky and Dusty
Twin Tinysauruses. Rocky is a male and Dusty is a female. They usually speak in fragments, with one starting a sentence, and the other finishing it.
Skip
A mammal-like creature who knows a lot about the Mysterious Beyond. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
Skitter
A Tinysaurus, one of the first to befriend Littlefoot.
Mr. Thicknose
Mr. Thicknose, a Pachyrhinosaurus, is, or was, a very respected individual in the Great Valley community and served as a teacher to the children of the Valley. However, his pedagogy was that of being a "know-it-all." The adults of the Valley would send him their children to receive a primary education; they assumed that Mr. Thicknose was indeed a polymath and could effectivily instruct their children.
He appeared in the film The Land Before Time VIII: The Big Freeze and has been seen in The Land Before Time TV series.
Tinysauruses
The Tinysauruses are a small herd of kitten-sized, multicolored sauropods that made their debut in The Land Before Time XI: Invasion of the Tinysauruses. Their name is a portmanteau of "tiny" and "-sauruses". Unlike their slower relatives, they are quite fast and are very lightweight, and their small size is useful for crawling into small spaces. In the film, Littlefoot accuses the Tinysauruses for knocking down and stealing tree-sweets from the tree-sweet tree. Because of this, the other dinosaurs are eventually fearful of these rather alien creatures, and have a desire to kill them if they could. When Littlefoot befriends these creatures, however, they turn out to be more sentient than he imagined.
The Tinysauruses can be spotted in The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers during the song, Flip, Flap and Fly.
Wanderers
Ali
Ali is an Apatosaurus who bears a striking resemblance to Littlefoot, apart from her darker pink skin color and light blue eyes. She and her mother belong to a herd that was forced to leave their homeland due to flooding and excess rain. With their old home turned into swamp, called the Land of Mists, Ali's herd, led by the matriarch called the Old One, was forced to leave.
During Migration, Ali's herd found the Great Valley and were welcomed by their cousins, Grandpa Longneck's family. Grandpa Longneck fell ill during this time, whereupon Ali and Littlefoot left the Great Valley to search Ali's old home for the fabled Night Flower that would heal him. Cera, Ducky, Petrie, and Spike soon followed them, and met up with Littlefoot and Ali. Together, the group found the Night Flowers and brought them to the Great Valley to heal Grandpa Longneck. Afterwards, Ali and her herd left the Valley to continue their migration even though she and Littlefoot would one day meet again.
Though fans began to despair of that promise ever being fulfilled, the "other story" remarked upon by the narrator is seen to be The Land Before Time TV series, when Ali returns with the herd. She meets a new friend, Rhett when her herd had merged with another. The episode mainly focuses on Ali meeting and reacting to Chomper.
Like most dinosaurs outside of the Great Valley herd, Ali was wary of trusting dinosaurs outside of her species and, on her part, Cera initially didn't trust Ali, but later learned to accept her and the two became friends. Fanfiction often has Littlefoot and Ali fall in love and marry as adults; others disagree, calling such a match incestuous on the grounds that they are cousins. [1] [2] [3] [4] She was voiced by Juliana Hansen in Journey through the Mists, and by Nika Futterman in the TV series.
Doc
Doc is a wandering Diplodocus (longneck) who goes "where the road takes him." He is shown to be very taciturn and not forthcoming of his past. The Dinosaur Filmography describes his voice as being as gravelly as a bone bed.
Shortly after appearing in the Great Valley, he saved Littlefoot, who quickly went on to idolize the wanderer. Littlefoot believed Doc to be the legendary "Lone Dinosaur", who saved the Great Valley long ago from the most terrible Sharptooth. He bases these assumptions on the fact that Doc can do fancy tricks with his tail; that he had been to the Great Valley before; that he has a scar on his eye (attributed to an especially vicious Sharptooth); and that he has a resemblance to Saurus Rock. To a degree, Littlefoot places Doc above his own grandfather and defends him when he is accused of bringing bad luck to the Valley. Towards the end, Doc and Grandpa Longneck work together to save Littlefoot from an Allosaurus and a Tyrannosaurus; Littlefoot asks Doc to stay in case the Valley should ever need a hero; Doc replies that the Valley already has a hero and looks towards Grandpa Longneck.
Doc appears in The Land Before Time VI: The Secret of Saurus Rock. Prior to The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration, some fans asked if Doc was in fact, Littlefoot's long-lost father.
In an episode of the TV series, The Lone Dinosaur Returns, Doc returns to the Great Valley. In the episode, he shows a great hostility toward the fact that Littlefoot is friends with Chomper. This severly weakens Littlefoot's view of Doc, but his respect for him is restored at the end of the episode when Doc apologises to Chomper, saying that he realizes that Chomper is different from other Sharpteeth. He is voiced by Kris Kristofferson in the film.
Foobie
Foobie, the mute Yellow Belly, is considered the "Wise One". Voiced by Peter Sepenuk.
Loofah and Doofah
Loofah and Doofah are two new creatures in The Land Before Time XIII: The Wisdom of Friends. They are hadrosaur-like reptiles with plumed feathers on their heads and tails and are weighty in both appearance and movement. It is possible that these characters are Beipiaosauruses (referred as Yellow Bellies). Loofah is voiced by Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Doofah is voiced by Sandra Oh.
Mo
Mo is a colourful Ophthalmosaurus who first made his debut appearance in The Land Before Time IX: Journey to Big Water. He is incredibly playful, especially with his "mud brother", Littlefoot, but his boisterous antics erode the patience of Cera. He is bilingual in that he can speak both Littlefoot's herbivore and his native dolphin-like languages, which the dinosaurs don't understand but, apparently, other aquatic creatures can. This is evidenced when Mo asks a crab to release Cera's horn in his own language.
Mo now appears as a notable cameo in the latest sequels. In The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration, wherein he is seen jumping out of the water during the Adventuring musical number. He can also be seen jumping out of the water and saying "And fly!" during the song Flip, Flap and Fly in The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers. Mo also appeared in an episode of the TV series.
Old One
She is the matriarch of the migrating Apatosaurus herd in The Land Before Time IV: Journey Through the Mists. She is regarded by her herd as the wisest, although some find her claims hard to believe. She may be related to Grandma Longneck, who speaks of her as a cousin.
She makes a reappearance in an episode of the Land Before Time TV series, where she and the herd runs after Chomper, who had pretended to be a mean sharptooth. She nearly kills him, until Chomper startles her by tearfully begging her not to hurt him. The fact that a sharptooth was talking to her distracted the herd long enough for Littlefoot, Ali, and his friends to rescue Chomper.
In the Spanish language version, she was given a male voice in the movie, but a proper female voice in the TV series.
Rhett
Rhett is an Apatosaurus who resembles Littlefoot, and has large, green eyes. He was introduced in The Land Before Time TV series, when Ali and his herd shows up in The Great Valley. At first, Rhett boasts about himself and tells Ali truthless stories about him protecting his herd, convincing her that they were real. Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky, Spike, Petrie, Chomper and Ruby plan a scheme to convince Ali that Rhett has been making up all of the stories when Chomper acts as a mean Sharptooth, and scares him away. This alarms the longnecks, who believe that Chomper is dangerous, and they give chase. Afterwards, Rhett admits to making up the stories when the Old One finds out. He then becomes friends with the gang. He is voiced by Elizabeth Daily, who was also the voice of Tommy Pickles on Rugrats and All Grown Up! and Buttercup on The Powerpuff Girls.
Saro
An old friend of Grandpa Longneck, who appears in one episode of the TV series. Voiced by Peter Sepenuk.
Tippy
A pink Stegosaurus, who is Spike's playful companion during the stegosaur migration in The Land Before Time VIII: The Big Freeze. When a stegosaur herd moved into the Great Valley, Spike immediately became close friends with Tippy. Unlike Spike, Tippy is very vocal; his catchphrase is "Fun, fun, fun!", similar to Ducky's "Yep, Yep, Yep". He was voiced by Jeremy Suarez, who later did the voice of Koda in Brother Bear and Brother Bear 2, and then Cree Summer in the TV series. Tippy and his herd have since appeared in the TV series episode The Forbidden Friendship.
Tippy's Mother
A kindly mother who invites Spike to travel with her herd when they migrate out of the Great Valley to find food during the freeze. She is very friendly towards Spike and loves her son, although after learning that Spike had been fostered by a dinosaur outside of his species, allows him to spend more time with Tippy and his herd. Tippy's mother finally realizes that Spike really belongs with his foster family. She appeared in the episode of the TV series The Forbidden Friendship.
Others
Archie
Archie was an old Archelon and appeared in The Land Before Time IV: Journey Through the Mists. He may have been inspired by Crusty the Turtle, a character who appeared on a 1989 animated series very similar to The Land Before Time called Dink, the Little Dinosaur. Both characters were shown to live in caves and give advice to the main character, an Apatosaurus (Littlefoot/Dink), and his multi-species group of friends, including a Pteranodon (Petrie/Flapper) and a hadrosaur or duck-billed dinosaur (Ducky/Amber and Scat).
Elsie
Elsie is a kind Elasmosaurus that Littlefoot and friends met in The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island.
After trying to find food for the dislocated members of the Great Valley, in order to keep the group together, Littlefoot and the others are marooned on an island, where the ocean surrounding it prevents the homesick Littlefoot and gang from leaving. Their problem is eventually solved when Elsie appears, offering the kids a ride to the mainland. They accept, and they travel safely back to the other members of the Great Valley, who have found enough food to last them until they could finally return to the Great Valley. Elsie is suggested to have an inconsummable soft spot for Grandpa Longneck, and claims that Littlefoot has inherited his "good looks" from his grandfather. Cera, because of her tendency to experience motion sickness, objects to further "rides" on Elsie's back.
Mo's Water Kin
Mo's water kin is Mo's family. Mo's relatives all look nearly identical except in that they have different sizes and colors.
The "Rainbow Faces"
In The Land Before Time VII: The Stone of Cold Fire, two dinosaurs (Gallimimus), superficially similar to Zippeau of the Dinotopia miniseries, appeared. These two were called the "Rainbow Faces," because their bills were colored red-orange and navy blue. One was male, the other female. They continually remind Littlefoot that the world is full of thought-worthy unknowns, to be found "beyond the Mysterious Beyond". The male, whose exact relationship with the female is unclear, seemed rather more eager than his companion to reveal scientific knowledge of physics unexpected of dinosaurs. Twice he allows himself to do so, but is checked by the female.
It is these two who plant the rumor of the "Stone of Cold Fire"'s magical powers, which are proven a fabrication. Their motive seems to have been the broadening of saurian minds, with whose narrowness they had grown frustrated. At the end, after they talk to Littlefoot, they disappear when they are suddenly surrounded by a shimmering pillar of light. When the light fades away, they are gone, whereupon Littlefoot looks into the sky and watches a bright light in the stars fly upward to the stars. The identity of the Rainbow Faces remains ambiguous; because of their knowledge and means of departure, the most popular suggestion is that they were extraterrestrials who had taken on saurian form in order to interact with the natives.
Rooter
Rooter was an old armored dinosaur, possibly a Nodosaurus. He made only one appearance—in the original The Land Before Time—but was one of the more powerful characters from the film. After Littlefoot was orphaned, he met Rooter, who cantankerously admonished him for crying. When Rooter had learned of the true reason for Littlefoot's tears—that being his mother's death—he softened toward Littlefoot and advised him in these words: "It is nobody's fault. The Great Circle of Life has begun. But you see, not all of us arrive together at the end." When Littlefoot asked for further advice, because of missing his mother, Rooter replied, "You'll always miss her. But she'll always be with you, as long as you remember the things she taught you. In a way, you'll never be apart, for you are still a part of each other." When Littlefoot complained of a stomachache, Rooter said, "Well, that too will go in time, little feller. Only in time." He then departed, leaving Littlefoot.
Rooter was added to the film to soften the emotional blow from the intensely frightening Sharptooth attack and the scene depicting the death of Littlefoot's mother. Though it was Rooter's only appearance, Bron would later remember somebody telling him of what happened to Littlefoot's mother. Some mistake the dinosaur he mentioned to be Rooter, but Bron also mentioned he heard no word about Littlefoot from this dinosaur. However, he may have meant that Rooter did not know what happened to Littlefoot after they parted ways. Rooter's voice actor was also the narrator of the first film, Pat Hingle.
Sue
A bright pink Supersaurus, she saved Littlefoot from a crocodile by simply crushing its face in The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration. She wishes to meet somebody who is taller than her, and once in the crater, she finally finds an Ultrasaurus, a sauropod taller than herself. Sue is kind and gentle, but her real personality remains a mystery because of her short amount of screen time. She was voiced by Bernadette Peters.
Tickles
The mouse-like Tickles is the first mammal seen in The Land Before Time film series. He is of unknown species (possibly a Megazostrodon, though this may be unlikely) and was so named because he, in Ducky's words, had "tickly fuzzies all over him." He appears in The Land Before Time IV: Journey Through the Mists. He is very intelligent and very brave, but unable to speak except through high-pitched squeaks, which are translated via his body language. His mute but brave nature makes him very relatable to Spike.
Tickles's Family
Tickles's family appear in the branches of a tree, connecting them to the inconveniencing creatures who had crowded the Longnecks out of their feeding grounds. This competition is not mentioned again.
Anonymous Sharpteeth
Sharpteeth are carnivorous dinosaurs, that are the film series' main antagonists. Each film typically brings in a new Sharptooth or two, usually involving a conflict between either the two Sharpteeth or the Sharpteeth and the dinosaurs living in the Great Valley at the climax of the film.
Sharpteeth live in the area known as the Mysterious Beyond; the region immediately outside of the Great Valley. The Great Valley is surrounded by great mountains, preventing Sharpteeth from entering. However, in the event of a landslide, as in The Land Before Time II: The Great Valley Adventure, sharpteeth find a way in.
The lead characters have a one-sided view of a Sharptooth (save for Chomper, who is a sharptooth himself), some going as far as calling them unintelligent and dangerous. Throughout the series, however, some sharpteeth have proven to be kind. Chomper and his parents showed kindness to Littlefoot and his friends in The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island (although Chomper's parents needed some persuasion).
Among the carnivorous dinosaurs seen as Sharpteeth are: Tyrannosaurus (nearly every film), Giganotosaurus (The Mysterious Island), Allosaurus (The Secret of Saurus Rock), Spinosaurus (The Great Day of the Flyers), and Baryonyx (The Wisdom of Friends).
In most of the films, the sharptooth vocals were provided by Frank Welker.

Fast Biters
Fast Biters (Dromaeosaurids) are a small sub-species of Sharpteeth.
Ozzy and Strut
Ozzy and Strut are two Struthiomimus brothers who entered the Great Valley in hopes of stealing eggs, though the more relaxed Strut was willing to eat plants. It was because of this duo's failed attempt at stealing an egg from Ducky's nest that the five protagonists found Chomper's egg in "The Mysterious Beyond" mistaking it for Ducky's unhatched sibling. Ozzie and Strut were bumbling villains who wound up being chased out of the Great Valley by Chomper's vengeful parents. You do not know if they are eaten until they reapear in one of the TV episodes were they return to the great Valley. Assuming that they escaped.
Their first appearance was in The Land Before Time II: The Great Valley Adventure. However, that was not the first appearance of a Struthiomimus, or egg stealers as they are called. The first was in the original The Land Before Time where one tried to steal Littlefoot as an egg. Also, during that film's end credits, a Struthiomimus, or egg stealer is shown creeping into the Valley. This may or may not be Ozzy or Strut; so too might one of the panicked Struthiomimus who are seen leaping past Cera and into the river in The Land Before Time IV: Journey Through the Mists however, they appeared in a episode of the TV series.
Red Claw
Red Claw is a male Tyrannosaurus (Sharptooth) who has a distinctive scar that goes through his left eye (like Scar in The Lion King), down to his left hand and claw. In the Land of the Lost (1991 TV series), it had a T-Rex that was similar to Red Claw, named Scarface, who had a big scar down the right side of his face. Red Claw is the prominent antagonist in the TV series.
According to Chomper and Ruby, Red Claw is the biggest and meanest Sharptooth of all, although in reality, the Tyrannosaurus is the third biggest predatory dinosaur, followed by Giganotosaurus (second biggest), and Spinosaurus (the biggest).
A few fans speculate that Red Claw may in fact be the original Sharptooth that killed Littlefoot's mother in the first movie, having an injured eye, plus being especially feared for it's kind, both tributes of the original Sharptooth. Only time will tell if these rumors are true or false. Voiced by Peter Sepenuk.
Screech and Thud
Screech and Thud are two somewhat goofy Velociraptors who are companions of Red Claw. (Howler was the original name for Screech in the TV pilot, but for legal reasons the character was renamed as the series moved forward.)
According to Chomper and Ruby, wherever Screech and Thud are, Red Claw is never far behind. In later episodes, Screech and Thud have been seen hunting without Red Claw.
Peter Sepenuk plays Screech, while Rob Paulsen plays Thud.
Icky and Dill
These two appeared only in The Land Before Time IV: Journey Through the Mists. They are also the main enemies in the movie as well. These two are totally different species. Icky is a Ichthyornis; one of the first flying reptiles to grow feathers and is known as "sharp beak" in the movie. Dill on the other hand is a Deinosuchus; one of earliest species of Crocodilian. She is known as "belly dragger" in the movie. These two are more partners than friends. They argue a lot and say that they would rather be alone than with each other. This is shown in the song "Who Needs You?" in the movie. But even though they disagree and argue on a lot of things they set aside their differences and work together to find food. Icky finds the food with his sharp eyesight and Dill gets the food with her sharp teeth and jaws. It isn't until the end of the movie when they finally had enough of each other that they finally split up. Dill slaps Icky away with her tail, but when she gets chased by a Plesiosaur, she cries out of Icky. They haven't been seen since, so it is unsure what happened to their fate.
Rinkus and Sierra
Appearing only in The Land Before Time VII: The Stone of Cold Fire, they are originally friends of Pterano, but appear more sinister then their associate, particularly Sierra. They assist in the kidnapping of Ducky, and later attempt to betray Pterano after the "Stone of Cold Fire" turned out to be a powerless meteorite. It was believed that they were burned to death at the end of The Land Before Time VII: The Stone of Cold Fire after a volcanic eruption caused the stone to explode; however, due to the force of the explosion they are last seen careening through the air back to the hollow in the mountain where they had camped the previous night, (quite singed and bruised, but otherwise undamaged). The Internet Movie Database once mistook Sierra to be in The Land Before Time IX: Journey to Big Water, but then he was currently removed from the cast list. Rinkus and Sierra were once announced to appear in The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers, but this decision was apparently dropped.
Rinkus is at first shown to be the more humorous of the trio, as well as seeming rather giddy with his own ideas. He also first appears cowardly under Pterano's temper; however during Pterano's song "Very Important Creature", he is seen convincing Sierra (who seems altogether ready to kill Pterano) that it would be in their own best interests to tolerate their leader long enough to be lead to their prize; as quoted: "Be patient, let him lead us to the stone." This reveals Rinkus to be cleverer and more conniving than first presented. His name seems to be a play on the name Rhamphorhynchus.
Sierra has no trouble revealing his cruelty and mutinous attitude throughout the film. He is shown being rather impatient, always wanting to take immediate action rather than wait. He shows no fear toward Pterano, and repeatedly challenges the latter. On more than one occasion he attempted to physically overthrow Pterano but was always held back by Rinkus, who at the time thought they all wanted the same thing and saw no reason for fighting) It is assumed by many that Sierra feels no pity for anyone, especially the young dinosaurs, for whom he admitted hatred; and always responded to Pterano's sympathy with comments like "So what?" or "Who cares?" His name seems to be a play on the name Cearadactylus.
Sharptooth
Sharptooth was the name given to one particular Tyrannosaurus for the first film, this one being the one who killed Littlefoot's mother. Some fans speculate that Red Claw may infact be the original Sharptooth, along with some evidence to support this claim, such as the fact that both Red Claw and the original sharptooth had injured eyes and were especially feared for their kind. Only time will tell if these rumors are true or false.
Swimming Sharptooth
In some of the films in which water was prominently featured, most notably The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island, The Land Before Time IX: Journey to Big Water and The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers, swimming carnivores, such as Hybodus sharks and Liopleurodon have been called Swimming Sharpteeth.
