Sefton High School is a partially selective high school in Sefton, Sydney, Australia. It is a full day, co-educational secondary school, and is a public school operated by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training.

The school is particularly strong in Mathematics, where it consistently excels above many full selective schools. [citation needed] Generally, about half of the school's band 6 or band E4 results come from the subject of Mathematics.

Sefton High School has some extra-curricular activities including sport, debating and history debating.

In the lower four grades (years 7 through to 10), approximately half of the students are selected by an entrance examination ("selective"), while the other half are accepted by virtue of local residency ("community"). However, in years 11 and 12, the two streams are not differentiated.

History

Sefton High School received its first students on January 30, 1961. It was at first planned as "Chester Hill High School". The plan was changed, however, and eventually a separate, non-selective school was established in the nearby suburb of Chester Hill. From the beginning, Sefton High School featured a large diversity in the origin of its students. Many of its first students were "New Australians" who had recently arrived from the United Kingdom and who were living in nearby Villawood. The large proportion of students from a non-Australian background (asains0 continues to this day.

Campus

Sefton High School is located in Sefton, a suburb in the southwest of Sydney. The school grounds cover almost an entire block along Hector Street. The main building is a U-shaped, two-storey building surrounding a rectangular playground known as the quadrangle. In addition, there is a hall/gymnasium, an industrial arts building, as well as an administration building and a newly constructed library.

In addition to the gymnasium, sports facilities include outdoor basketball courts, a football field, netball courts, volleyball courts and various playing areas. The back oval has been recently rejuvenated, with the grounds being smoothed out and brand new grass being laid, all up, costing about $100,000. New handball court lines, including an 8 square court, have also been painted on the new bitumen that was laid during the 2005-2006 school holidays.
