Welcome to Wikipedia!

Dear Newton2: Welcome to Wikipedia, a free and open-content encyclopedia. I hope you enjoy contributing. To help get you settled in, I thought you might find the following pages useful:

Don't worry too much about being perfect. Very few of us are! Just in case you are not perfect, click here to see how you can avoid making common mistakes.

If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions.

Wikipedians try to follow a strict policy of never biting new users. If you are unsure of how to do something, you are welcome to ask a more experienced user such as an administrator. One last bit of advice: please sign any dicussion comment with four tildes (~~~~). The software will automatically convert this into your signature which can be altered in the "Preferences" tab at the top of the screen. I hope I have not overwhelmed you with information. If you need any help just let me know. Once again welcome to Wikipedia, and don't forget to tell us about yourself and be BOLD! --Wisden17 22:13, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Rgs logo.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Rgs logo.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 17:09, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Roosevelt

Why does everyone keep rejecting my changes to the Theodore Roosevelt page? His nickname as a small child was "Teedie," not "Teddie" (or, as an adult, "Teddy"). Look it up. "Teddie" is incorrect. Azaner 23:41, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Newton2, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member, you might be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee, Titoxd, JoanneB, and Freakofnurture.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me by my talk page, Celestianpower by email or talk page, or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users on our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, please see the IRC Tutorial, which was written by one of our members. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!

Thanks! G.He 23:46, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Mug House

Do you mind if I/you move this article to Mug House, Claines. There is another pub of this name in Bewdley - and also a wine bar in London apparently! Verica Atrebatum 17:18, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Which template was that?

Hi, I'm wondering which template it is that you used on User talk:Stuart1000, I've just been using {{welcome}} and I think the one you used for Stuart1000 is a little better. BigNate37 09:35, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fawlty Towers

Hello! Nice to here from you. Yep, I'm a massive Fawlty Towers fan - like yourself! I owe you one after creating The Anniversary and Basil the Rat episode pages, and adding the pictures - saved me a lot of time. I don't know if you're aware but I'm hoping to set up a Wikiproject Fawlty Towers, follow the link from my main user page if you want to join... I need one more user to sign their name and then... away we go! Hope to co-operate and work with you in future FT articles.. cheerio Foxearth 11:21, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Bot status?

Hi, there. I recently looked at your contributions and it appears you are making edits extremely rapidly at bot-rate. Could you please explain this, as per Wikipedia:Bots, sysops could have blocked you per "Sysops should block bots, without hesitation, if they are unapproved, doing something the operator did not say they would do, messing up articles or editing too rapidly." Could you explain you edit speed, please? It is recommended that people wait at least 30-60 seconds between edits unless they have a bot, as well. Thanks. Orphaned fair use image (Image:Internet Explorer 6.jpg)

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Internet Explorer 6.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hello, you signed up for the Fawlty Towers wikiproject, and it is up and running (only just) - may need a hand to start with because I'm not too familiar with wikiprojects, (stubs and templates in particular). Hope you are satisfied join me and improve the standard of articles related to unarguably one of the most influencial television programmes of all time! Regards! Foxearth 11:00, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Broadway Tower

Hello Newton2,

Congratulations on your image being selected as the picture of the day. Newton's Law of Physics. At a junior high school called Golden Gate Junior High (middle school, grade 7), in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, I remember being shown a demonstration. Our science instructor marched us up a flight of stairs, and then we, the students, all leaned over and watched the drop.

When I look at the windowed balconies, I think of Shakespeare's Juliet were she to lean over and fall off one of those balconies. Hmm? She did, didn't she? Tragedy.

Simply amazing image. What appears to be a lone woman, possibly a broad, admiring the structure. Two towers that appear to be supporting the main frame and just a little hint of that third tower propping it up from behind. What is her, the towers, the ... past? Were the main frame to lose that third tower in its background, its past, do you think the two towers remaining would be able to support it, prop it up, ensure that it remained standing tall? I would surmise that it would depend on how strong the foundation of the overall structure was, base and all. Rock solid or not.

Wonderful simply wonderful! A classic!

PS: I have heard that some schools block this site due to the fact that some of the information is inaccurate. Pity. Truly, a pity. Young minds are missing out on so much when their exploring is limited and their vision is shielded by four square walls ... over-protected, over-parented, in essence, interfered with ... suffocated, strangled, poisoned. Locked in. Locked down. Prisons.

I have just received an issue of Reader's Digest. Diana, Princess of Wales, top left corner. smiling out at all of us. Bottom left headline: You can talk to a teenager in love. Poor Juliet ... if only, if only, if only. Poor Diana? A marriage of convenience? (All marriages, convenience?) All deaths of love due to family or outside (of the relationship) interference. White noise?

"To make her laugh. To make her laugh."

There truly is nothing better than to hear a broad laugh!

Deborah McLaughlin

PS: I would like to direct you to smARThistory.org. Listen to the VoiceThreads. Each voice and image matters. VoiceThreads. A dude named Steve from Boca Raton, Florida. Quite the endeavour. Quite the endeavour.

Thank you all very much for nominating and voting for this picture! I have been absent from Wikipedia for quite some time due to academic commitments and was only informed of this today by a friend of mine. I really am overwhelmed. --Newton2 23:52, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well what can one say! Stunning picture, and it is so pleasing to see that the community has recognised it as such. First it got FP status, then obviously on the main page, but this really is something special. Well done Issac, treat yourself to a nice apple.--Wisden17 00:05, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Rgs logo.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Rgs logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Waldorf salad ft.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Waldorf salad ft.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. contact concerning the Broadway Tower image (permission for use)

Dear Newton2; I am writing you concerning your great photo of the Broadway Tower. I would like permission to use it for the cover of my next zine, A Day In The Air. (I have also contacted the Broadway Tower itself, through it's website concerning this use of an image of the tower)

I want to trade permission for me to use your Broadway Tower photo for crediting you (and including your website, email, contact info) within the zine. Your permission now would give me future permission to use the image as long as you are credited.

Specifics: I might alter the image, it might be in black and white and also in color... I usually print around 100 or more copies of my zine. (only half would have the color ones... or so... ) Also, when I finally figure out how to make my zines into PDFs.. I will surely send you a copy of the file.

How I found your photo: I found the photo because I was reading about Follies (architecture) and then started reading about specific examples of Follies. I read about the Broadway Tower and I liked what I read and the photo was good, I am going to juxtapose the photo of the Tower with a photo of a space shuttle (on the back of the zine) (since there is a similarity in their forms) (which is also I think why I like your photo of the Tower) As I was writing an email to the email address on the website for the Broadway Tower, I went back to the photo (because I realized that I should also try to get the permission of the photographer and not just permission from the people who maintain the tower) Then, as I was looking to find who uploaded the photo to Wikipedia, I saw that the photo was awarded Photo of the Year (2007). Wow!! Well I think it is a great photo too! Ok. Well I hope you let me use the photo (or a version of the photo) for the cover of the zine. This zine, A Day In The Air issue number 18, will be mostly writing I did on a blog from a website called "FriendsOrEnemies" which was merged into "Buzznet" around Nov. of 2006. Its mostly personal writing and observations and different stuff... Also I will continue some of the features from previous issues.. such as continuing "the sick list of pop punk bands" - (which ended with the letter L with the band Lagwagon.) I might bring back "Captain Procrastination" - and some other stuff...

I am celebrating 10 years of publishing in April (2008), including a reading at Quimby's (www.quimbys.com). I'll surely mention your photo and you at the reading if that is something you are interested in. (again, I'll include your info in the zine itself.)

Ok. Well I think you have the idea. :D! - bradley adita Xsxex (talk) 15:27, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. When you reply, please email me at bradley AT adita org (writing it like this so that the spamming robots dont detect it... and start sending all that spam.)

P.S.S. If you have other images of the Broadway Tower, or other infomation about FOLLIES, let me know.. Or if there is something you think you'd like me to include in the zine...

P.P.S.S. Please delete this message from your talk page when you are done and lets continue the conversation through email.

Newton2 - are you there?

Hi, this is the same guy from the message above. Just checking to see if you're there. Please get back to me soon. I am trying to finish the zine this week. Xsxex (talk) 07:34, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
