Wapol Pirates

The Wapol Pirates are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Wapol.

Several years before the present timeline, Wapol was the king of Drum Island, succeeding his father. However, unlike his benevolent father, Wapol was cruel and spoiled, often making very bad decisions for his country. One day, the kingdom was attacked by the Blackbeard pirates, and as soon as he saw their power, Wapol and most of his cabinet fled the island without even fighting back. However, they got lost and couldn't find their way back afterwards, so they turned to a life of piracy.

Part in the story

Before he was exiled, Wapol initiated a "doctor hunt" throughout the nation. According to his logic, by forcing every doctor except for his Isshi 20 to leave, the citizens would have to grovel at his feet in order to get any medical attention, which would keep them under his control. However, two doctors managed to escape his grasp: the quack doctor Hiruluk and Dr. Kureha. Wapol then came up with a trap to draw them out--he would spread the news that all of the Isshi 20 were sick (which they weren't) so the two doctors would come and try to cure them. Hearing about this, Dr. Hiruluk, who was already going to die that day due to a disease and being accidentally poisoned by his adopted son, Tony Tony Chopper, arrived at the castle only to find a group of soldiers aiming rifles at him. Glad that the doctors were alright, Hiruluk gave a speech on the nature of death and drank an explosive potion so that he wouldn't be killed by either Chopper or Wapol. Moved by his actions and angered by how Wapol simply laughed at all this, Dalton decided to speak against his king, claiming, "There is no cure for stupidity!". As king, Wapol naturally could not accept this, and had Dalton imprisoned until he would renounce his words. Dalton refused and remained for a long time in the king's prisons. Dalton's imprisonment ended abruptly, when the nation was attacked by the Blackbeard pirates, and Wapol fled with the court into exile.

The Straw Hat Pirates first encounter the Wapol Pirates out on the sea. Using their submersible ship, the Bliking, the crew ambushed the Straw Hats, but when Wapol tried to eat Luffy, he was merely knocked into the ocean, forcing the rest to leave in order to rescue him. Dalton, who is trying to form a new government on Drum, helps the crew find a doctor for a sick Nami. Later on, following the Straw Hats for revenge, the crew finally finds themselves back on their home island and Wapol decides to return to his throne. However, he was defeated by Luffy's crew. The Isshi 20 reveal that they care about the nation just as much as everyone else, but they were forced to work for Wapol, and become the nation's doctors.

The force of Luffy's attack is so powerful that it sends Wapol flying, far away to another island. In his side-story, we get to follow the former king in his second exile. After travelling around from island to island, eating everything he wishes he eventually gets local authorities after him, and becomes a petty criminal living in poverty. Eventually, he ends up on a dumpster under a bridge, where he makes toys out of garbage to pass his time. The toys however proves to be popular among the local children, and he sets up a small business. However, when scientists discovers a new metall in his creations, Wapol gains world fame, and manages to set up a multi-million beli industry focusing on his toys. As Wapol's side-story ends, the status quo is somewhat restored, as the former king is now a wealthy and powerful CEO, married to the One Piece Universe's version of Miss Universe.

Pirate Flag/Ship

Wapol's flag is that of a standard Jolly Roger, except with Wapol's large metal jaws, with the tongue sticking out to its right; and a crown at the top.

Wapols ship the Bilking is round in design and metal plated. It also seems have a large number of impressive mechanical features; including retractable dome plating for submarine mode, paddle wheels, and a mechanical figure head that can be used to board other ships.

Captain/King

King Wapol is the former ruler of the Drum Empire, later renamed Sakura Kingdom. He ate the Baku Baku no Mi (バクバクの実, Munch Munch Fruit), which allows him to eat virtually anything and take on its properties. Wapol uses this power many times against Monkey D. Luffy in acts such as chomping his two advisers into a single warrior, or shooting bombs from his "Baku Baku Factory" pistol arms. He even tries to eat all the weapons inside his massive armory room to turn himself into a superweapon. Though, Nami manages to steal the key from him when Wapol catches her. Luffy also chases him to a room after Chessmarimo is defeated where he reveals a large cannon called the "Bre King Royal Drum Crown VII Cannon" ("Mega Monster Seven Barrel Super Shot" in the dub). Although, when he was about to shoot Luffy, he realized that it was jammed by a snowbird nest. Probably the most shocking thing about Wapol is that he was able to swallow himself, and munch away all his excess body fat, turning him into an extra skinny form when he found himself too big to follow Nami through a small doorway. He brags a lot about being the king of Drum Island. Wapol is blasted far away from Drum Island by Luffy's Gomu Gomu No Bazooka/Gum Gum Bazooka and soon lands in a forest village. He wakes up and eats everything in sight transforming to whatever he eats. He soon starts making toys out of what he eats in which the village children are entertained with. A man sees this and offers Wapol a job. Wapol soon accepts and after making many toys becomes the CEO of a gigantic toy corporation and is now dating Miss Universe. He was mentioned by Usopp when Luffy ate everything on a buffet table including Chopper and saying "What are you Wapol!?". This was said in the 8th One Piece Movie.

Wapol's Brother

Mushul is exclusive to the ninth movie, where he is the brother of Wapol. He has the power of the Noko Noko no Mi < ! -- An English name for this fruit has not been made yet, made up English names will be removed -- ! >, and due to it has poisonous spores contained within his body. Every ten years the spores would be expelled, resulting in the death of anyone unfortunate to inhale them. Thus, he was imprisoned in the Land of Fire in order to neutralize the spores' effects. Wapol searched him out in order to use him as a human weapon against the rampaging Blackbeard Pirates, but ended up intending to use the spores to kill the inhabitants of Drum and replace them with his own loyal subjects. Wapol eventually ingests his brother in order to create a dirty bomb, but is luckily blasted off of the island by Luffy.

He was created by Eiichiro Oda for the film, Episode of Chopper: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura.

Chess

Head of Staff and Lookout

As head of staff, Chess writes down every new law Wapol makes, along with everything he eats. Chess is quite cocky, often stating that he has figured out his foe's weakness, and he also won't hesitate to hurt innocent bystanders. Chess is a skilled archer that uses huge arrows, often multiple ones at the same time. It is also shown he is able to set the tips of his arrows aflame.

He is voiced by Yūsuke Numata. Interestingly, one of Numata's hobbies is archery, which Chess uses.

Kuromarimo

Magistrate/Sheriff of the king

As magistrate, Kuromarimo is the highest-ranking law officer below Wapol. He fights using the large afros on his fists, sports a large afro on his head, three small ones on his beard, and an afro linked ponytail. He has the ability to do many tricks with said afros, from ejecting spikes from them to shooting them off and using them to constrict opponents.

With regards to his name, "kuro" means "black," and "marimo" is a kind of algae that forms into round balls due to the action of the tides. So in essence, "Kuromarimo" is a way of referring to his hairstyle.

In the English dub, Kuromarimo speaks with an American Southern accent.

Chessmarimo

A fusion of Chess and Kuromarimo created by Wapol's Baku Baku Factory, though Sanji comments that Kuromarimo is simply standing on Chess' shoulders and only their clothes were fused. They become a stronger warrior with 4 arms, 2 heads (Kuromarimo's above Chess'), and many weapons which allow them to use their powers to the full extent, such as arrows, hammers, and axes. He was defeated by Chopper using his Rumble Ball. His weakness, according to the Rumble Ball, is the section under the Chess' chin. It is unknown what happened to him after Chopper defeated him.

Isshi 20

Doctors, Former Members

The Isshi 20 are the twenty most skilled doctors of Drum Island ("isha" means "doctor"), whom Wapol took for himself in order to make his subjects grovel at his feet for their services. While they were under Wapol's control, they secretly despised him as the rest of the people did, but gave in to the King in order to continue their research and refine their technique, which they hoped to one day use to help their compatriots. After Wapol was defeated, they were forgiven by the people of the island and rejoined them as part of the new Cherry Blossom Kingdom.

Drum Kingdom Soldiers

Crewmen, Former Members

The soldiers and protectors of Drum Kingdom. They wear plain black and wool coats. When Wapol became King the soldiers had nothing to do except do his bidding. After BlackBeard's attack the soldiers left with Wapol as a pirate crew. They were, of course, weak when compared to the Straw-Hat Pirates. After the defeat of their corrupt king they went back to serving Drum Kingdom and the new king, Dalton.

Crew strength

Though they are nothing compared to the protagonists of the story, Wapol and his cabinet managed to subdue an entire nation, and flashbacks showed Wapol easily defeating Dalton in his "ultimate form". It should be noted that Wapol didn't get the chance to use this ultimate form, which he would have achieved by eating all of Drum Castle's weapons, because Nami stole the key to the armory from him.

Other information

By turning garbage into toys, Wapol discovered a new metal that he called Wapolium.
