The second season of Big Brother, the American reality TV show aired twenty-nine episodes during the summer of 2001 from July 5 to September 20. The show marked a major change in format and rules from the previous debut season.

Changes

Changes introduced in this season included:

  • Though not a rule, twelve contestants appeared on Big Brother 2, opposed to ten on Big Brother 1.
  • The HouseGuests no longer gave nominations that were voted on by the public. Instead, they competed to become Head of Household (HoH). The winner of this position was given a separate bedroom and the right to nominate two HouseGuests for eviction.
  • The ultimate winner of the show was determined by a vote of the ousted HouseGuests rather than the public. During this season only, however, all ousted members of the house, became voting members of the jury while in future season only those HouseGuests who lasted until the final weeks became jury members. Justin Sebik, who was expelled, did not return for the finale and did not play a part in the final vote.
  • In a special twist this season, the two remaining HouseGuests got to decide which HouseGuest's vote they could void, in hopes that their vote was for their opponent, and that they would gain an advantage over the other player.
  • During this season, the food competitions were introduced. HouseGuests competed against each other for the right to win food, and the losers were put on a diet of only Peanut Butter and Jelly for all their meals for the week. The Peanut Butter and Jelly punishment diet lasted through until Season 7 when it was replaced with the "Slop" punishment diet.
  • This season marked the end of the free internet feeds that the public had access to during the show's first season, and CBS introduced a paid user fee system.
  • The house itself was renovated, and evicted HouseGuests did not exit into the outside world as in season one, but instead exited into a closed studio where they were interviewed by Julie Chen. After their interview with Julie they would meet up with family members or friends in a feature that was dropped in later seasons.
  • The announcer from Season 1 returned to narrate the opening to episode 2 of Big Brother 2, but was thereafter replaced by another announcer.

Memorable events

  • About two weeks before the end of the second season, the September 11 attacks pre-empted television for an entire week. In a move away from the rule of not letting the HouseGuests in on information from the outside world, the three remaining HouseGuests were told of the news. Contestant Monica was told, in the diary room by executive producer Allison Grodner that her cousin Tamitha was presumed missing at the World Trade Center. The week after the attacks, the game continued as normal.
  • In week two, HouseGuest Justin Sebik placed a knife to the throat of fellow HouseGuest Krista, asking "Would you get mad if I killed you?" Both competitors were under the influence of alcohol, but Justin was disqualified from the show and evicted immediately. The HouseGuests were notified the following morning via the voice of executive producer Arnold Shapiro, who asked them to gather up Justin's belongings to be sent home.
  • The first true strategic alliance of any Big Brother season was formed when contestants Mike and Will formed the "Chilltown" alliance, which was later expanded to include Shannon.
  • Volatile HouseGuest Shannon became known for her temper. In one memorable moment, she was chastised by the producers when she angrily scrubbed the toilet with the toothbrush of HouseGuest Hardy, after they had had a fight. In another encounter, she placed a bag of potato chips on HouseGuest Autumn's pillow to insinuate that she was fat, causing her to sob uncontrollably.
  • On finale night, the audience was updated that former HouseGuest Sheryl was diagnosed with breast cancer and needed to undergo chemotherapy, as well as the news that Monica's cousin Tamitha had died at the World Trade Center.
  • During the show's final episode, contestant Mike "Boogie" proposed marriage to fellow contestant Krista, with whom he had a romance on the show. They would later break up.

HouseGuests

Autumn

Autumn Daly (born on December 11, 1972) from Battle Creek, Maryland, was evicted from the house in week two by a vote of 7 to 0.

Bunky

Bill "Bunky" Miller (born 1965) made it to the final five, but was evicted in week 8 in a week when Head of Household, Hardy had to make a tie-breaker vote. Big Brother's first openly gay HouseGuest, he was also known for frequently crying.

Hardy

Hardy Ames-Hill (born 1970), from Miami, Florida who was Head of Household more than anyone else (3 times), made it to the final four before being evicted in week 9 when Will cast the sole vote against him.

Justin

Justin Sebik born 1975, from Bayonne, New Jersey. He was expelled from the House on Day 10 because of the "The Knife Incident", where he threatened others and held a knife to the throat of Krista after a night of heavy drinking. Most HouseGuests were asleep at the time and only learned of the incident the next day.

Kent

Kent Blackwelder, (born 1955), from Powell, Tennessee, was evicted in week 5 by a vote of 4-0.

Krista

Krista Stegall, (born 1973), from Opelousas, Louisiana, was evicted in week 6 by a vote of 3-0. She was involved in a romance with Mike, who proposed to her during the show's finale. They would split up soon afterward, however.

Mike

Mike "Boogie" Malin, (born 1970), from Los Angeles, California was evicted in week 4 by a vote of 4-1. He memorably proposed to Krista during the show's final episode. He would later return in 2006 for Big Brother: All Stars, where he became the eventual champion.

Monica

Monica Bailey, born 1961 and from Brooklyn, New York made it to the final 3 before being voted out by Head of Household Nicole. During the show, it was revealed that Monica's cousin was missing after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. Monica was told of the incident but not in detail.

Nicole

Nicole Nilson Schaffrich, born 1970 and from Pontiac, Michigan. During the first week she annoyed the other HouseGuests for being bossy, and she was immediately put up for eviction. But after surviving that vote, she gradually became an influential and powerful player, partly through her alliance with Hardy. She made it to the finals, where she lost to Will by a vote of 6-3.

Shannon

Shannon Dragoo, born 1972, was a member of the Chilltown alliance, but was voted out in week 3 by a vote of 6-0. She is best known for her toilet scrubbing incident with Hardy.

Sheryl

Sheryl Braxton, born 1958, was a divorced mother, and the first HouseGuest evicted by a vote of 5-3 in week 1.

Will

Will Kirby, born January 2, 1973 and from Miami, Florida. Known as "Dr. Will" and a member of Chilltown alliance, his strategy was to combine charm with lies. Despite being nominated four times, his strategy worked and Will was crowned champion of Big Brother 2, defeating Nicole by a final vote of 5-2. In 2006, he appeared on Big Brother: All Stars, where he finished in fourth place.

Highlights

Days 1-12

The HouseGuests moved into the house and were immediately thrown into a competition for food and luxury. Kent became the winner of a brand new SUV on the first night, making him a target for eviction. The next day, Mike became successful in the series' first Head of Household competition. He nominated Nicole for eviction, as she was annoying to most of the house. He also nominated Sheryl for eviction as a decoy, believing that Nicole would be evicted over the more liked Sheryl. However, Nicole fought back and rallied the votes to stay. She received the support of Kent, Bunky, Hardy, Krista and Autumn, who voted for Nicole to remain in the house. On Day 12, Sheryl was evicted from the house.

A few days before Sheryl's eviction, Justin was expelled from the house for his aggressive behavior. The final straw was a drunken night in the kitchen with Krista, when he placed a knife to her throat. He was called to the Diary Room on this tenth day in the house, and never came back.

Days 13-19

Krista became the new Head of Household after the eviction of Sheryl. She was under pressure from many of her housemates to nominate two members of the 'Chilltown' alliance which included Mike, Will and Shannon. However, Krista did not do so, and chose instead to nominate Autumn and Kent for eviction, believing that Autumn was too unstable to remain in the house. Although Nicole entertained the idea of joining with the Chilltown group to evict Kent, Autumn was evicted in a unanimous vote on the 19th day.

Throughout the week, Autumn was engaged in arguments with Mike and Shannon, who she felt was treating her in a cruel manner. Shannon placed a bag of potato chips on Autumn's bed in the hopes that Autumn would see the chips and not know who did it, wondering which HouseGuest thought she was fat.

This week also marked the first week of the Peanut Butter and Jelly diet. The females in the house lost the food competition and were restricted to PBJ and water throughout the week.

Days 20-26

Hardy took over the reins from Krista as Head of Household. As a part of the 'TOP' (The Other People) alliance with Kent, Nicole, Bunky and Monica, he targeted Chilltown's romantic couple of Will and Shannon. Shannon requested that the HouseGuests vote to evict her, and they granted her wish, sending her to the outside world in a unanimous vote on Day 26.

This was another explosive week in the Big Brother house. Shannon felt that Hardy's nominations were "cowardly" and used his toothbrush to scrub the toilet. She was forced by producers to admit to this for sanitary concerns. Shannon also became engaged in arguments with Hardy and Kent during the weekly Monday meeting that occurred in the house.

Days 27-33

Kent became the new Head of Household after Shannon left the house. Many HouseGuests felt that he was taking his power too seriously during the week. He struck a deal with Chilltown's Will to not nominate him for eviction. He instead nominated Chilltown's Mike and Krista, who lacked any official associations. Mike and Krista had begun to take their relationship to a romantic level during the past weeks and were angry to be nominated together. On the 33rd day, Mike was evicted, with only his friend Will voting to keep him.

Mike had several comments to say to Kent during the week, resulting in arguments between the two. This week also marked another week in which Nicole entertained the idea of joining with Chilltown to save Mike and evict Krista, but she did not do so.

Days 34-40

Hardy won the Head of Household for the second time. He set his sights on Kent, whose actions he did not approve of the prior week. Alongside Kent, he nominated Will for eviction for the second time. The house unanimously voted to evict Kent on the 40th day.

This week had great tension in the house. Kent felt that the house was alienating Bunky and himself, which caused Monica to blow up in a rage. Kent also engaged himself in an argument with Hardy during the Monday meeting, calling Hardy a liar.

Days 41-47

Nicole won her first Head of Household competition after Kent's eviction. Upset and betrayed with the 'Untouchables' alliance that Will revealed to her, which consisted of Krista, Monica and Hardy, Nicole set her sights on Krista and Monica, who were very close friends in the house. The women were very upset to be nominated together, and vowed revenge upon Nicole.

Nicole and Hardy felt betrayed with some of Krista's statements she had made, and strong armed Bunky and Will into voting to evict Krista unanimously on Day 47.

Days 48-61

An eviction week was skipped due to Justin's earlier expulsion from the show. Therefore, the 8th week in the house was filled with competitions and special events.

In the Head of Household competition, Hardy entered the 9th week as Head of Household for the third time. With Bunky winning many of the special competitions during the prior week, Hardy felt threatened and nominated him for eviction, alongside Will for the third time. Will made Nicole and Hardy angry many times during the week, but ultimately was saved because he promised to nominate Monica for eviction should he win the next Head of Household. Hardy broke a tie vote and evicted Bunky from the house on day 61.

Days 62-68

The HouseGuests began an endurance competition for Head of Household, in which Monica was victorious for the first time. Nicole and Hardy were outraged when Will threw the competition, after he had promised to help save them. Nicole's week was also made more miserable when, during the endurance competition, she received a banner plane which contained a message from her husband, upset with her sexually suggestive actions in the hot tub the previous night. Nicole worried that her marriage was in jeopardy.

Monica nominated the powerhouse alliance of Nicole and Hardy for eviction, leaving Will as the sole voter for the week. Still upset with Will's betrayal, Nicole and Hardy did not campaign. Seeking to avenge his girlfriend Shannon's earlier eviction, Will voted to evict Hardy from the house on Day 68.

Days 69-79

Nicole and Will began a successful start to the first part of the Head of Household competition, and secured their lead in part 2, leaving Monica out of the third portion.

Focus was taken out of the game on Day 73, when the September 11th attacks occurred. The HouseGuests were informed of the attacks, and Monica was informed that her cousin had yet to be accounted for in the attacks. The live eviction planned for Day 75 was pre-empted and pre-taped on Day 77, to air three days later.

On Day 77, Nicole and Will battled it out in the third part of the HoH competition. Nicole emerged victorious, and cast the sole vote to evict Monica, believing her to be a bigger threat to win the money than Will.

Nicole and Will remained in the house for several days without any planned activities.

Days 80-82

On Day 80, the jury of 9 returned to question Nicole and Will and to hear their thoughts. Nicole felt that some of the questions were very mean and Will gave an arrogant speech to the jurors, asking them to consider whether or not they are happy with themselves.

On Day 82, the jurors returned and revealed their votes. Will won in a 5-2 vote with votes from Sheryl, Mike, Kent, Krista and Monica. Nicole received votes from Autumn and Hardy. Shannon and Bunky's votes were nullified. For the record, Shannon voted for Will, while Bunky voted for Nicole.
