Template:Future sport The 2018 Commonwealth Games, is an international multi-sport event that has yet to be organised by the Commonwealth Games Federation. The winning bidder will be announced in 2011.

Bid process

The 2018 Commonwealth Games bidding process will begin in 2010 by the Candidate Cities through their Commonwealth Games Association (CGA), advising the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) of their intention to bid. The last date for formal bids to the CGF, in the form of a Candidate City File, will be in 2011, six months before General Assembly. This is then followed by a visit by the Commonwealth Games Evaluation Commission who then produce a report which is circulated to all CGAs. Commonwealth Games Associations then can visit each Candidate City to inspect all their bids, including presentations from the Candidate City bid committee.[1]

In 2011 CGAs will vote to award the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Each CGA is entitled to one vote each. After the votes have been made and verified, the President of the CGF will announce the decision to the Commonwealth Games Assembly.[1]

On May 1st, 2008 Nigerian Olympic Committee President Habu Ahmed Gumel Announces to the Press in Abuja, Nigeria that Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua has given the green light to bid on the 2018 commonwealth games . Engineer Habu Ahmed Gumel, as he is known in much of the sport events world, was quoted by the Nigerian News Paper "This Day" to have said "The bidding process will have to commence immediately. This is an all-time landmark achievement for me and the Commonwealth Games Movement and indeed the Olympic Movement in Nigeria," he added. "I owe special gratitude to President Yar'Adua for the abiding faith and confidence in the Olympic Committee.

"There is a lot of work to be done. We are going to do a lot more work than we have done previously to ensure victory this time around."

However a bid city was not put forward but most likely cities are Lagos or Abuja.

An Official with the Nigerian Sports Commission stated in a report of Nigeria's Beijing 2008 preparations that Abuja was to be the Candidate City for Nigeria's Bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. There was no basis for Lagos to be included in the list at anytime. Lagos Bid for the Commonwealth Games for 1982 and lost to Brisbane,Australia. No new Venues have been built since the 1973 All-African Games which was to be the base venues for the 1982 Commonwealth Games

The report of Toronto bidding, if Halifax was to lose, is now born out to be false. In April of 2008 the Canadian Federal Government came out with a sports hosting policy that places a Commonwealth Games hosting as being in doubt for 2018. The policy only allows for two multi-sport events in the 2008 to 2018 time period and Vancouver's Winter Olympics for 2010 is included in the quota. The Golden Horseshoe Area of Southern Ontario is lobbying to bid on the 2015 Pan Am Games and Edmonton, Alberta has a committee that started in 2003 to bid on the World University Games of 2015. On August 7th 2008, the Federal Government of Canada announced its tentative support for the bid to host the Pan Am Games of 2015. A bid win for the World University Games or the Pan Am Games will eliminate federal funding for a Commonwealth Games in Canada. Canada and North America last hosted the Pan Am Games in 1999. The United States will not mount a bid as the USOC is Bidding with Chicago for the 2016 Olympics. Late July the Stephen Harper Conservatives throw support behind a 2015 Pan Am Games. Ontario Premier Dalton McGinty travels to Beijing 2008 in August and get a good reception from PASO Officials whom govern the Pan AM Games .

The ACT Sports minister has put forward plans to better Canberra's sports infrastructure so as to bid for the Games in 2018[7] Canberra's Commonwealth Games ambitions in November 2007 were put on hold to a hosting in 2022. The following report "The ACT Government says major changes will have to be made to Canberra if the city is going to make a serious bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

ACT Tourism, Sport and Recreation Minister Andrew Barr says while Canberra is better placed than most cities of the same size, a lot still needs to be done.

Mr Barr says sporting infrastructure, transport accessibility and the number of hotel rooms will be looked at.

"I certainly acknowledge that from where we are sitting now in 2007 it's a big ask but this is talking 15 years ahead so you've got to have some sense of vision for the future and the sorts of events this city could host," he said.

"A lot can change in 15 years and in all likelihood we'll be a larger city in 15 years then we are now so I think it's worth exploring and we'll have the conversation."

  • Australia Perth, Western Australia [9] Western Australia's Premier, Alan Carpenter, on August 5th 2008 said Perth will bid on the Commonwealth Games for 2018 or 2022 but only after conducing a feasibility study.
